Hi, I'm new here. I found this forum and made an account here because (surprisingly) for the first time ever, I am just so genuinely confused with a character's decision that I need someone to explain to me or give me some justification for this because I just don't understand.
I don't understand her... selfishness? I guess is one way to put it. Mainly, in Thunder and Shadow, why does she choose to join ShadowClan after leaving the rogues instead of ThunderClan? Even knowing ShadowClan never really accepted her, she had absolutely no friends in there, and no one had ever treated her with any respect or given her any attention (besides Needletail). Even knowing they kinda resented her and even kinda pushed her out when Needlepaw left. Combined with the fact that Twigpaw had literally just spoken to her for the first time in 4 months that very night and obviously still cared about her. She didn't really have a bad relationship with Twigpaw at the time. Maybe she felt a little hurt that Twigpaw never tried to check up on her during the winter despite being a kit and her being surrounded by dangerous rogues. But it's not like ShadowClan did anything either??
At first I was willing to just roll with it, but later it kinda turns into a big deal in the most irrational way possible.
Later she just expected Twigpaw to be completely willing to abandon her Clan after a couple of days in ShadowClan despite Twigpaw actually living in ThunderClan for pretty much her whole life, while Violetpaw spent most of her life outside of ShadowClan? And SHE'S the one who felt "betrayed" because Twigpaw wasn't willing to make that monumental sacrifice for her? She doesn't even consider maybe Twigpaw feels the same way about Thunderclan as she does about ShadowClan at this point (I guess? It must not have been very strong since she so willingly joins the rogues later for ONLY Needletail anyway)
This then results in her joining the rogues because she felt like Needletail was all she had left. Which at least, is understandable given how much Needletail had manipulated her earlier. But this whole course of events only happens because Violetpaw never really thought about Twigpaw to begin with and it's made me seriously resent Violetpaw.
So I feel like I really don't understand Violetpaw's motivations or character at all. She seems clingy at times and completely detached other times.

She most likely joined Shadowclan due to her being raised there. That's the only logical explanation. Otherwise, it's for the plot. Also, Needletail was using her, she's a bad role model and a bad friend. It's irrational for Violetpaw to stay in Shadowclan with the rogues because of her, even if it didn't have those rogues in it, it would still be more realistic to join Thunderclan with her sister. However, Violetpaw is still young and uneducated, but it's most likely for the plot. She shouldn't have felt "betrayed", she should have just left with Twigpaw to join Thunderclan.

I figured it was plot. But her going to shadowclan just didn't make sense... Logically? Even if she was raised there.
Yea it's clear needletail was taking advantage of violetpaw from the get go, but that whole unhealthy relationship developed over the course of the story, so at least it made sense when it came down to staying with the rogues? But it's clear that that decision was mainly for needletail so it really makes it seem like she was unattached to the cats of shadowclan despite living there for a bit.
All her irrational decisions for the sake of plot really ruins the whole character for me, and makes the plot itself frustrating.

She stayed in ShadowClan only for Needletail. That's what I'm going with. I'm wondering what would happen if Needletail ever died.

To me, it's like she had a bad past, and is clinging to the only thing that she thinks can help get rid of that... And then that one hope turns out using her anyway, and convincing her to betray the ones who raised her... It's definitely unhealthy, almost bordering on obsession...
It kind of reminds me of a Johnny and Dallas type relationship (for those who haven't read The Outsiders, two characteristics together because they both come from bad pasts, and one in particular only has morality because the character is around). In this case, it's a lot darker though, because in The Outsiders, it was clear that the two cared for each other... Needletail probably doesn't care for Violetpaw that much, and is clearly only using her... Not to mention the situation in Warriors is also made worse that both characters are currently alive and are capable of doing more damage (the other two in The Outsiders died in the end, and never did much damage to anyone).
It's all basically a tragic example of what being brainwashed, a traumatic past, and other psychological damage can do to a person...

I guess it's because ShadowClan is all she knows? idk I don't really understand why she would join them again either. They treated her terribly
Although I don't see her as selfish for not joining Twigpaw. I just don't really see why she would want to be in Shadowclan
