hiya, folks. i know my fic-writing days have...dwindled, but i still check in, if only as a lurker sometimes, and i know now more than ever is hard. if you're like me, and live in the us, you're probably very stressed. likely afraid, or friends with people who are afraid for the change to come. even if you're not in the us, the world is not made of isolated countries, and you probably have concern for the direction in which america heads.
to start, your fears are valid. people are scared right now because our next president is a man who has made his campaign based on discrimination and hate. he has surrounded himself and created his likely cabinet of people who share his hateful ideologies. people who believe muslims should be banned from the us, or forced to wear identification of their religion in a way eerily reminiscent of the way jews were marked in the holocaust. people who believe electrocuting someone often enough in the name of conversion therapy will turn them into heterosexual members of society, physical and psychological damage aside, concern for people as humans aside. people who have little regard for those with disabilities or mental illnesses. people who believe women ought to have no final decision over their own bodies. there is much more i could add, i know. it's frightening.
no amount of flag-waving and idle chatter about liking x group, just not a particular few of x group will change the fact that our president-elect's actions do not match any semblance of open-mindedness. his actions speak volumes about the hatred his policies are built on, and the fact that he holds endorsements from hate-groups as prominent and abhorrent as the kkk is further proof that he stands only for a specific portion of america, the rest be damned.
i know it's scary and i share your fears. i share them deeply, as an lgbtqia girl hailing from a conservative area where i could be attacked for who i love, and certainly as a person who worries for the well-being of those around me. i will not tell you "oh, it'll be okay." it's going to be hard, and it will not be okay until change for the better is fought for, is made.
but i will tell you this: take care of yourselves. take care of your friends, your neighbors. be kind, be loving, be helpful, be present as much as you are able. don't try to help others without a thought to yourself; this leads to burn-out. but when you've met your needs, and if it is safe for you to do so, do your best to be the support the people around you need.
and additionally, do not stop creating. it's incredibly hard to create right now, it seems. stress is a horrible block, as is fear. but create your hearts out. do not let anyone take that away from you. yes, actions can speak louder than words. but words are important too, especially aligned with action. create the worlds you wish to see, create the kindness the world deserves to have. tell the stories that must be told, and let no one stop you from it. you have that power in you, and i encourage you to embrace it with every bone in your body.
and when you are not creating, be kind. we need kindness right now, more than ever. we need kind words and we need actions that reinforce the words instead of belying them.
perhaps i'm repetitive tonight. i'm not sure. i'm running on very little sleep and an unhealthy dose of fear for my future and the future of my loved ones. but i want you to know that you are incredible, you are creators, you are loved, and if you need a listening ear, please either PM me here, contact me on [REDACTED FOR REASONS]. i will login to this site and break my hiatus to be certain that i can answer your messages, and i will do my best to be the support you need. all you have to do is ask.
be safe out there, friends. be safe, be kind, create.
