Chapter 1 Taken
Midna's almond brown eyes fluttered open against the dim dawn light. Her ears flicked as she hoisted her body off of the moss-covered ground, and stretched out her limbs. Her foster mother, Ziara, lied beside her, and Midna stepped over her to the entrance of the den. Midna yawned as she glanced around the clearing, her skulk starting to stir with the quietness of a falling leaf. She glanced sideways at her friend, Skye, whose orange head peeked out of her den. The two friends met up in the middle of the clearing, entwining their bushy tails.
"Good morning," Midna had greeted, flashing Skye a toothy grin. The orange fox nodded in reply, then Midna saw her cast a sideways glance at a hunter; Jay. "Don't look now." Skye whispered, her shoulders wiggling. Midna nudged her playfully. "I'm not into him," she paused, trotting in front of Skye and trailed her grey tail along her jawline. "But you are." Just as Midna had spoken, Lunar, a younger fox, had appeared from his den, meeting to two she-foxes by the prey pile. "It sure is interesting to see two females drooling over Jay." He snickered, picking up a mouse. "But even though he's the best hunter, he can be," Lunar paused, searching for words. Midna could see the amusement basically clawed onto his face. "Braggy." Then Lunar walked away with his mouse, tail high in the air. Skye rolled her ocean blue eyes. "Pssh, whatever," she muttered. "You and Lunar fight like siblings in the night." Midna commented. "Oh shush. I'm going to go do my job before Lycanth gets onto me." Then Midna watched as Skye trotted to the entrance of camp. Lycanth was the leader of the skulk, the strongest too. Foxes had said Midna was swifter than the swift, and she deserved to be his mate. The grey fox hadn't believed these 'rumors', and honestly, they annoyed her like a cat in winter.
Midna grabbed a rabbit, starting to gnaw on it with hunger that pierced her belly like a thorn. She gave a glance to the low pile. I wonder if Lycanth is going to send out a hunting party. She thought, scanning the camp for a sign of the leader. Midna found him stalking towards her; his black fur hardly blending in with the sky which was turning a beautiful pink. "Midna," he barked, muscles rippling as he made his way over. "I want you and Jay to go to the long-legged's chicken coop for some chickens. We've been running low on prey lately." He ordered. Midna got up with a nod. "Alright." She watched him start to head away, but after a few moments, Lycanth's head twisted around. "Be careful," he warned. Midna turned away with a nod, looking around for Jay who was already waiting for her at the camp entrance. She padded up to him, smiling uncomfortably. "Come on," he said, leading her out. Midna flashed a sideways glance at Skye, who was guarding the entrance, and Skye gave her a death glare. Don't worry, she thought. Nothing is going to happen.
She rolled her eyes, noticing she had stopped in the middle of walking. "Come on, slowpoke!" Jay snapped up ahead. Midna shook her head free of thoughts and caught up with him.
"Okay," Jay said. The two hunters were now crouched in a bush, watching chickens in a chicken coop calmly walk around. "I'm going to go around that side." He pointed his white muzzle to the right side of the coop fence. "You go straight through that hole," Jay then shot off, zigzagging quietly down to the fence. Midna waited a second, scanning the hole she was supposed to go through. Then, she darted down the hill, squeezing through the hole, and both of the foxes scared the chickens, who were now crazily running around and screeching. Midna snapped at a black chicken, then stopped as a dog started barking. She frantically looked around for Jay, so they could escape. "Jay!" She called. Midna jumped out of the way as he nearly bowled her over, skidding to a halt which made a puff of dirt rise. "What?" He growled. "I was about to-" he was cut off by a loud crack, which Midna dodged easily. "He wants my pelt!" She exclaimed. "They all do," she added under her breath. "Run!" Midna pounced atop the chicken coop, and leaped off as the long-legged pointed its stick at her and it crackled. She spotted Jay swerving around the coop, heading for the hole in the fence. The grey fox started to head for another hole, until Jay shouted, "I'm stuck!" She whipped her head around to see his body lodged in the middle of the fence, and his back legs scraped at the ground vigorously. "Hold on!" Midna dashed to his side, grabbing his tail with her teeth and starting to pull him out. "Ouch!" He swatted her away with his back paw. "What else am I supposed to do!?" She yelled over another crack! "I don't know!" He hissed from the other side. Midna ran off under the chicken coop as the long-legged rounded the fence. She squeezed herself under the wooden coop, flattening her ears and watching as the long-legged took Jay's scruff in its scrawny paw, and started chuckling. He twisted around, yelping with effort.
Midna narrowed her eyes. "No!" Then she clawed her way out from under the coop, sliding under the hole Jay had been stuck in, then she ran up to the long-legged, scratching its leg. It yelped in surprise and dropped Jay. He landed with an oof. Midna quickly nudged him to his paws, pushing him out of the way as the long-legged shot another crackle at him. She yowled as it grabbed her and Jay's scruff, and the two foxes wriggled in its grasp.
The long-legged took them into its house, shoving Jay into a barred box. Midna twisted her head around as the long-legged carried her elsewhere; a bright room with a metal table. She squealed as it shoved a sharp thing into her leg, and with one last kick, Midna's eyes were closed and she was drifting to sleep.

Chapter 2 New Forest
Midna awoke with a groan, her head throbbing as if something were bashing it open. "You're awake," she heard a voice say. "Wha?" She asked, her word fumbled by a bump. "It's Jay," he said. Midna rolled her eyes at his voice. She expected to hear Lunar or another male, but then she realized what had happened when her and Jay went to go hunting at the chicken coop. "Jay!" She called. Midna looked at her surroundings; she was in a barred box like Jay's, and if she looked out of the bars, it was all pretty outside of the box. It was fields, with beautiful oak trees lining a dirt path. She looked below her outside the bars, seeing metal and when she looked forward, a latch was holding the boxes in place.
"We're on a truck." A new voice rasped. Midna looked around, and at the end of the line of boxes was a new fox with russet fur and a whitened muzzle with age. "Who is that?" Jay snarled from beside Midna. "I'm Flower," she hissed. "Now, I've seen foxes loaded and unloaded on this truck, and you two are lucky they aren't skinning you alive." Flower spat.
"Then what are they going to do to us?" Jay asked, hostility disappearing from his tone. "They're putting you in a new forest with no other foxes. There may be wolves and bears, but that's about it. They want you to breed, because there are no other foxes or fox cubs in that forest. I'm too old to do it myself." Flower said.
Midna and Jay exchanged a glance from inside their boxes. "Eww!" Midna cried. Jay just smirked. "Calm down," Flower growled. "You could find a way home, but," she said. "You'd need the help of the other forest animals. They know the forest as well as the back of their own heads." Flower added.
Midna nodded. "Fine."
***
Midna watched the sky the rest of the ride, and when it was about sunset, the truck stopped. She heard a long-legged's pawsteps as one of them rounded the truck and picked up Jay and Midna's barred boxes.
It carried them into a new forest, away from the dirt path. When it was satisfied, it dropped their cages in the middle of the forest. Midna backed into the back of her box as she saw its paw on her cage. It mumbled somethings in gibberish she couldn't understand, and the bars on her cage lifted up. Midna saw Jay shoot out of his box, running deeper into the forest. Midna widened her eyes. "Wait for me!" She called, racing after him with unease. She followed his scent to where he stopped in the middle of a clearing. She could barely spot his pelt, as it was as blending into the orange sunset of the sky. Midna could tell he had trouble spotting hers too, because he narrowed his eyes against the black bushes. "We should find somewhere to sleep," he suggested. "We can explore tomorrow and maybe try to get out of here the next day." Jay added. "Sure," Midna said. "Lead the way."
He took the offer gratefully, and Midna followed his tail as he sped along into the forest, leaping over logs and nearly tripping over thorny vines. Midna admired the landscape as they ran. The leaves that fell onto the ground with every leap of the foxes, and the lush bushes that were scattered all over. Before she knew it, Jay had already found a place. Midna kept following as he led her inside a little burrow big enough for them to fit in. It wasn't that big, so they had to sleep beside each other. Once they were satisfied and curled up against one another, Midna widened her eyes in uncomfortableness. "What? It's not like I'm gonna murder you in your sleep." Jay said, raising an eyebrow. "Fine. Just, go to sleep," she replied, resting her head on his back. She felt Jay shift a little, and she patted her head against him. "Aye," Midna said. "Stop moving." One he had, Midna fell asleep, completely forgetting Jay was under her.
Midna sleepily opened one eye, Jay not under her anymore. She was sprawled out on the dirt. Midna got up, stretched her limbs, and squeezed out of the burrow. She sniffed the air, Jay's scent wafting in it. He must've gone hunting. She thought, brushing her tail against a tree. Midna startled herself, bumping into Jay who had two mice hanging from his jaws. "I havs food." He mumbled, the mice making him talk weird. Jay dropped the two brown bodies, and nudged one towards Midna, sitting down and taking a bite of his. Midna watched with a raised eyebrow, taking a satisfying bite of hers while he talked. "So, where do you think we should go today?" He asked.
"Well, probably what you suggested—explore." Midna answered, burping. Jay chuckled, his tail tapping the ground. "Sure," he said. "I saw this huge tree out there whilst hunting with a squirrel in it. I can't climb trees, so I ignored it." He added, talking fast. "And then-" Midna cut him off, smiling. "Okay, okay, in stead of explaining, you can show me." Midna finished up her mouse, getting up with a wave of her tail. Jay scrambled to his paws, turning and running into the bushes without looking back. Midna followed close behind, amused. "So, how far is it?" She huffed. "Not too far," she heard him answer. Midna leaped forward as Jay suddenly stopped, and she jumped off of some tree bark, landing with surprise and jumping. "WOAH did you see that? I backflipped off of it! Wow, I've never backflipped before," she yelled excitedly. I've only ever learned to vanish. She thought. Jay shook his head, groaning. "Uh-huh." He said, rubbing his head with a paw. "And I slammed into the tree."
Midna rushed forward, giving his head a few quick licks. "Oh, are you okay?" She asked. She flicked an ear, looking around. "Maybe we should travel slower," Midna suggested. Jay nodded, steering clear away from the humongous tree. Then she stopped, signaling for Jay to stop too. Midna's ears perked, and her fur bristled. She heard roars in the distance, getting closer. The grey fox pushed Jay out of the way, leaping over him as two bears collided onto the scene. One grizzly pushed the other up against the tree, and they both had slobber dripping from their mouths. Play fighting. Midna guessed. They suddenly stopped, sniffing the air and roaring at the foxes. The two bears licked their lips, suddenly lumbering towards them. Midna pushed Jay onto his feet, chanting, "Liakra!" Then she vanished into thin air. Jay whipped around, seeing Midna gone, and he too chanted, "Liakra!" The two foxes were now invisible, unseen by the naked eye.
The bears stopped in confusion, sniffing the air again. They followed the scent trails to the foxes. "Run!" Jay exclaimed, and Midna could hear his pawsteps fading away as he ran. She followed the sound of them, huffing with tiredness. They stopped, and she could hear him skid to a halt, whipping around. "Badger,"
This forest is full of predators, isn't it?
Midna gasped for air as she was knocked sideways. "Midna!" She could hear Jay call. She looked up, seeing a hungry looking badger who could now see and feel her. "No!" Jay growled as the badger grasped Midna in its jaws. Then both she and the badger got knocked sideways, and all Midna remembered was falling.
