In my opinion, Squirrelflight is probably one of the most best written characters throughout the entire series. She's had a lot of development, from being extremely obnoxious, then she matured, and acted motherly to her own children. I really like Squirrelflight because of this, and also partly because I really enjoy reading about feisty characters.
I actually didn't really mind Squirrelpaw as an apprentice. She was annoying a few times, sure, however, as someone stated on the forums.. what if Squirrelpaw acts the way she does because cats expect too much from her?
Then the journey happens. Squirrelpaw matures, beginning to understand how serious this mission is to everyone. And this is when she starts to develop feelings for Brambleclaw - even saving his life at one point. They both start to become closer after the journey, when they lead the Clans out of their territory and into the unknown.
Once they reach the lake, that's when problems go downhill. Squirrelflight argues with Brambleclaw because he spends a lot of time with Hawkfrost, judging him, guilt-tripping him, you name it. However, in my opinion, not only was she worried that Brambleclaw may get hurt by his brother, but do you think that Squirrelflight might have been jealous that Brambleclaw was spending too much time with Hawkfrost? After all, Squirrelflight was still young then, and she obviously didn't have very much self-control over her own emotions. Of course she's going to argue with him.
However, I forgive her. Because in the end, she did seem to realize why Brambleclaw wants to spend so much time with his brother:
Now, let's go onto the lie she told to the Three. I'm pretty sure a lot of people understand why Squirrelflight lied by now, but I want to say my own opinion about this. I believe it was the right thing for her to do. She took Leafpool's place by being a mother to the Three, and raised them to believe that she is their mother. She sacrificed the Clan's trust in her just so Leafpool can keep the secret that she took Crowfeather as her mate. And what makes it even worse is that Yellowfang, a StarClan member, manipulated Squirrelflight to believe that she couldn't have children, and that was why she wanted the Three, so Squirrelflight can have the chance to raise kits as her own.
Squirrelflight really didn't deserve life dropping down on her in pretty much every arc of the series. She lost her old home back in the forest, Feathertail during the journey and had to deal with grief at such a young age, broke a cat's heart and felt guilty for it even though it wasn't her fault, the Three she raised as her own children, her mate, Firestar, and the Clan's trust in her. But she had her sister, and she stayed strong. In the end, the wait was definitely worth it. Squirrelflight got Bramblestar back as her mate, and everyone forgave her. Then.. she loses Sandstorm, two of her kits, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Erins kill off Leafpool.
I think because of what she has gone through in her life, it has helped her mature so much. She's a great mother, and I am pretty sure that the Three still see her as a mother. A lot of cats seem to be angry with her for something that isn't even her fault, I have noticed. Whenever Squirrelflight tries to do the right thing, she is punished for it:
But Squirrelflight remains strong.
She doesn't let anything bring her down, unlike her sister, Leafpool. Squirrelfight patiently waited until the Clan trusted her - and look at her now! After everything she's gone through, she's a great deputy. She keeps track of Bramblestar's errors and keeps up with the patrols.
Sure, she has issues with the Dark Forest trainees, but keep in mind, she's dealt with a lot of cats who have hurt her in her life, Ashfur being a perfect example. I can't say I blame her entirely - although it does seem like she may have moved on now.
I personally think that Squirrelflight is a pretty decent character throught the series. She's not as good as Sandstorm, but still a pretty darn good character overall. I don't think Squirrelflight's as bad as everyone says she is, and I don't believe she deserves all of the hate the fandom gives her.

Brambleclaw halted and faced her. "Squirrelflight, can we talk this through without clawing at each other? Did you really think that I just wanted to wan RIverClan because of Hawkfrost?" Hawkfrost - his half brother, Tigerstar's son, the cat Squirrelflight refused to trust. If he and Squirrelflight were to be together now, they had to sort this problem out once and for all.
"Yes, I did think that." To his relief, Squirrelflight was direct, but didn't sound angry. "You know how I feel about Hawkfrost."
"But he's my brother," Brambleclaw reminded her. "I can't ignore that, any more than I can ignore that Tawnypelt's my sister, even though she is a ShadowClan warrior."
He wondered if he was being entirely honest. He had never walked in his dreams with Tawnypelt, as he did with Hawkfrost, following twisting paths to their meetings with their father, Tigerstar. Tawnypelt had never joined in these meetings, where he and Hawkfrost were taught to lead their Clans. He knew he could never tell Squirrelflight, or any other cat in ThunderClan, about that dark forest and the dark warrior who waited for him.
But there's no need, he argued with himself. They'd never understand. There might be things Tigerstar can teach me, but that doesn't mean I'd do what he did to gain power.
"Tawnypelt's different," Squirrelflight persisted. "She journeyed with us, for one thing. And she's half ThunderClan."
Brambleclaw bit back a protest. He wanted to settle the quarrel, not start it up again. "Think of it like this," he began. "If Leafpool had gone to WindClan with Crowfeather, would you care for her any less?"
"Of course not!" Squirrelflight's eyes stretched wide. "She could go off with the whole of WindClan, and she'd still be my sister."
"And Hawkfrost is still my brother. Like Tawnypelt's still my sister. We'll always be kin, even though we are in different Clans. You're lucky that you have your sister in the same Clan. I'd give anything to have my kin with me."
Squirrelflight searched his face with a penetrating green gaze. "Okay," she mewed. "I guess I can understand that." - Sunset, pages 70-71
