Anyway, hello my name is Darth and this is basically what it says. A art palace. Because I'm going into Art school soon
Fun facts:
- A little info about my drawing and stuff, I am completely like self taught. I have only taken one art class in my life and it was ceramics. Mainly because I thought my HS drawing teacher was crazy and had such strict rules on how someone should draw and thinks all other ways to draw are wrong unless they are her way. Which bugged me, so I learned through friends and basically a lot of researching stuff I want to do plus tons of practice.
- I mostly, almost 24/7 don't know what I am doing. Which I should stop if I am to go to art school.
- Speaking of art school, I am currently tittering on CCAD in my home state ( Columbus college of art and design ) and FIT in New York ( Fashion Insitute of Technology ) for Illustration mainly. Idk which one to go to yet so it's hard.
- My DA is artgeek666.deviantart.com if you wanna look at my digital stuff but my insta has more art then my DA mostly traditional.
Tips of Wisdom I've learned:
- I would suggest before buying a sketch book, know what it's used for before anything. Like if you want to paint and get a sketchbook made for strictly sketching and drawing, the paper won't be able to withstand the paint and buckle ( Become wrinkling and stuff ), look into like getting different sketch books if you can or just get Mixed Media pads so you don't have to worry about it really.
- If you are a newbie in a new media ( Like pencil, marker, paint are types of media ) then don't go directly for the expensive stuff, get the stuff that's cheap so you can practice. Then move on to the expensive stuff ( Like I bought a pack of markers that weren't that much and I practice with those before investing in the big boys like Copic or Promarkers )
- It's always a good thing to have a reference, nothing is wrong with having a reference with body position or hand placement. I use references when I'm confused with a placement and honestly it has helped me improve cause then I know what the hand looks like and how I do it.
- You are allowed to kind of 'copy' a artists style, well not really but like maybe you like how this one artist do their noses on their characters and you wanna mix that with your own style. That's fine. What isn't fine is copying the artists work and claiming it's yours. That is not cool. Big no no.
- Sometimes the cheaper stuff is actually pretty good, you don't have to invest in a $25 pencil kit with a fancy sharpener that you will loose in the long run. I'm not saying ALL expensive products are like not worth the money, but sometimes it's best to save save save your money so you can buy the expensive stuff.
- DO YOUR RESEARCH. Do not be like me and get a expensive pack of pastels and not know how to flipping use them or what paper is best for them, or buy marker pad sheets and learn that you can't really build up blending on it. It's a waste of money and material.
- If you are a marker enthusiast like myself, you should know that Blick's has their own alcoholic marker brand and while I have not use them, my sister has ( She's younger but we she's wanting to go into cartoon design ) and says they work a lot like copics. Look up videos on marker comparisons so you can get an idea of different brands ( I'm collecting them nows~ )
- This is kind of clear but if you don't know what Traditional media is, it's basically the physical side of art. Like pencils, paint, charcoal, and all that fun stuff. Digital is well...done on a computer.
- IF you are a beginner digital artist and looking for a drawing tablet to start out on, I suggest Wacom Intuos tablets. And I also suggest buying it on Amazon since I got mine at a good price. Look for the small ones, so you get familiar with the tabs and buttons. And register it correctly, cause you can get free art programs on it but if you mess up then sorry nothing can be done.
- I highly encourage you, that if you do mainly fanart drawings, to try and branch out of that and do your own original work. Drawing fanart is awesome and all, but I have a friend who has done nothing but fanart before in the past and when it came to drawing her own styles she ended up really struggling to find a style that suited her. The same for me, I use to do a lot of fanart pieces with pastel and charcoal and when I did my own work, I had trouble drawing and it took a lot of trial and error to find the style I have now.
- I find it EXTERMELY helpful to listen to music that fits the piece of art I'm drawing. If I'm drawing a happy picture I tend to listen to light music, something dancy. If it's something angry, listen to some rock music like Saving Abel or Theory of a Deadman ( And I listen to Five finger death punch when I want seriously angry stuff ) or sad music for sad pieces.
Brands of art supplies that you can look into/places to shop:
- Copic Markers- I would suggest the Ciao version for those who have a budget on art stuff, but the sketch is pretty good too just a bit more pricey.
- Prismacolor - Prismacolor in general is a good art supplier, I own some markers and pastels including colored pencils and they are affordable for the most part.
- Promarkers AKA Winsor and Newton brands - I don't really know a lot about this company considering I only have a few markers ( Like 5 ) but I have knowledge that they are good.
- Blicks Art store is art HEAVEN. They got nearly everything plus they have a discount card. You really have to buy MORE in order to get less but it's worth it. Plus the staff actually KNOW what they are talking about instead of just googling it.
- Michaels is alright, it's more of a craft store then a art store, but they have awesome deals too.
- Barnes and Nobles - I know, this is a book store why am I mentioning it? Cause sometimes, some B&N stores have some cheap art supplies you can get. I got a sweet deal of graphite pencils for $5 bucks. They aren't the best but they don't suck. Plus they have some cheap sketchbooks you can invest in.
A Brand I do not recommend because I hate it personally but you could like it:
- Artist Loft: I personally really dislike Artist loft cause I find some of their products really bad to use. I mean, It's a cheap supplier for beginners but for pros Artist loft is like bad. Maybe it's just me, maybe you really like artist loft but I don't. I go as far as to say I hate it.
Anyway that's all for the more typing part. If you got tips to share tell me, or whatever something.
