What is your opinion on SkyClan? Did they make a healthy contribution to the Warriors series or were they an unnecessary addition? Do you love them, like them, are neutral with them, dislike them, or plain hate their existence?
(Please do not critisize me for my opinions; it is impossible to get everyone to like something. Also, if a word/statement is marked with a * in front of it, it means that I am about 99.9% sure I am correct (on a statement), but I am not completely sure. Note that I have not read all of the Warriors books, and I will no doubt miss some of their history or get it slightly wrong. If I do miss anything, please notify me. Thank you.)
It is my personal belief that SkyClan, while certainly a (mildly) interesting addition to the Warrior series, was not a necessary one. When they were first introduced in *Firestar's Quest, I was majorly surprised they hadn't been mentioned earlier, especially once I learned they had once been one of the FIVE Clans countless seasons ago! (6 if you include StarClan.) At first I was somewhat intrigued with this long-forgotten and disbanded Clan, but after reading several novels (including the entire Dawn of the Clans series), I gradually became less fascinated with them.
These days I unfortunately view SkyClan as a Clan that was maybe meant to be lost to the ages, and maybe shouldn't have been introduced at all. If they had been mentioned earlier in the series (or maybe even a plot could have revolved around them somehow), then perhaps my opinion would be different. Then again, adding ANOTHER Clan into the mix (even now) is a bit too much for me. I know (or theorize) that "Erin Hunter" introduced them in order to either increase the "life" into the series; maybe they were slightly out of ideas; perhaps SkyClan had been brought up long ago and was only revisited relatively recently; or maybe some other reason I cannot think of at this point in time. Whatever the case, while SkyClan [is] a moderate success, a good number of people (including myself) are a bit iffy on the whole SkyClan concept. (Some I know even hate their very existence.) But why is this the case? Well, on all (*or virtually all) occasions they have been portrayed as a weak and "corrupt" Clan with much less faith in and respect for the warrior code than the other Clans. (Three examples include Cloudstar's decision to abandon StarClan together after their home was destroyed and they were driven away by the other Clans; most of the survivors either choosing to live as kittypets or rogues after times got tough during the rat "infestation"; and the introduction of the Daylight Warriors.) When will SkyClan fully embrace the warrior code and finally learn to stand on its own four paws? I honestly don't know the answer, but the future isn't looking bright for them. (Both in their survival and their international "success". Then again, I might be very wrong.) What happens when the [generations] of Clan cats that have traveled to the gorge to SAVE SkyClan all pass on? Will they teach the knowledge of SkyClan onto future generations, or will SkyClan one day be forgotten once more by the four? If that day were to come to pass, then SkyClan would be forced to either adapt or die... a process that doesn't seem to be happening much at the moment. Do they have the potential to gain as much momentum and popularity as ThunderClan, WindClan, RiverClan, and ShadowClan? In my opinion, no. But will SkyClan become as popular - and as accepted - as a Clan that lost its territory and was forced to live a different way of life from what once guided them? I don't know. I personally see them as an unneeded element brought to the series. An interesting one, I cannot deny. But if I was reborn as a warrior cat and I had to choose to live either with the four Clans by the lake or SkyClan by the gorge, the four Clans by the lake (ThunderClan, WindClan, RiverClan, and ShadowClan) would be my choice every time. Maybe because the Warriors universe "grew up" to just having the 4 Clans by the forest/lake, with StarClan to guide them, and is the reason why SkyClan's existence within the plotline is a controversial one. Maybe Erin Hunter purposely separated them from the Clans - and kept their history to a minimum (which, by the way, is one of their "flaws" as a Clan) - is so that the Warrior fans could possibly expand off that template and create their own unique history of the long-forgotten Clan? Who knows. But in conclusion, my view of SkyClan in a nutshell is this: they are a virtually undocumented (compared to the other Clans), a possibly unexpected and certainly a controversial element to the series. Unless their history is revealed in greater depth, their treatment of the warrior code is strengthened, and their portrayal as a weak, dependant Clan (upon the other 4, especially ThunderClan) is somehow lifted and their independance finally established, SkyClan may forever be a "mixed-rated project" (among the fans), if you know what I mean.
I apologize this is so long! XP Once I get going on something I am passionate about, it is very difficult to keep my [thoughts closed]. But please I would be fascinated to read your take on SkyClan! ^-^
