So as the topic states, I'm drafting a fanfiction and have two different approaches. I'm not sure which approach to use, and was wondering about your opinions. It's about Skyclan.
Basically, Skyclan is never driven out and this takes place in the old forest (which is never destroyed, by the way). Their territory is also still intact, but Twolegplace also exists. I won't say more for spoiler reasons, because I eventually plan posting this fan fiction here.
Basically, I'm wondering which set of characters people would find more interesting. My first set is to use the characters from the modern Skyclan, with a few changes. One of which is that characters that join temporarily or never joined join permanently. There's also descendants that makes sense with the Ancient Skyclan (such as Spottedleaf, Tigerclaw, and anyone that looks like the cats from Cloudstar’s Journey). The concept of daylight warriors isn't there, but all of them join permanently. Finally, a few characters join from Twolegplace, but again, not saying who for spoiler reasons.
My other set is to make a completely original cast of characters descended from the Ancient Skyclan, with references to them. The other idea isn't as well thought out, but I figured people might not want to see modern Skyclan, even in a different context.
Also, if it helps, I have several other fan fictions I'm drafting where Skyclan stays with the clans/is never driven out/is the focal point. Some of these have OC allegiances, and some of them don't. It's just that this one could have either, so I'm not sure which to pick.
What do you think?

I personally think an original cast would be more beneficial to the story and your writing overall. It allows more creative freedom and the ability to make characters who don't already have a precedence for their personalities or actions.

I think there's more places to go with OC allegiances and more room for characterization. If you want it focused on a unique plotline, I'd go with this.
But if you want to make it more based on 'what-ifs' CCs may be better as it allows for more direct comparisons.

Yeah, it's an what-if story, so canon characters may be better... I think going with the mix may be my best choice, because that allows creative freedom while the same time having something established already...
