Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that when Yellowfang blinded her son it was his first life, since Nightstar recieved no lives whatsoever. However she later fed him deathberries, saying it was his final life. Where did the other seven lives go then?

Nightstar got no lives because he wasn't seen as leader by StarClan, not because Brokenstar had them all.

Nightstar got no lives because he wasn't seen as leader by StarClan, not because Brokenstar had them all. Well, Sunstar recieved only 8 lives since Pinestar still lived his final life. I'm assuming the same went for Nightstar.

Brokenstar was near the end of his life after he was driven out, or at least when he was captured anyway. That's why Nightstar never had any lives—Brokenstar was forced out of his Clan and thus wasn't seen as ShadowClan's true leader by StarClan. It's different with Pinestar because he at least gave up his position willingly.

I'm assuming the same went for Nightstar. StarClan didn't see Nightstar as the new leader. Mainly because Brokenstar was still alive. That's revealed I think in Tigerclaw's Fury. Runningnose admits to this, and that they lied to the Clan about him receiving his nine lives. Another reason I think is due to the fact that Nightstar wasn't even deputy. He was so an elder.

Flowerstem/star wasn't deputy either and yet StarClan sent a sign to Redscar, just like it happened with Nightstar.

Adding onto this, like I said Brokenstar was also forced out of his Clan whereas Pinestar stepped down, so there's another reason why Nightstar didn't receive night lives while Sunstar at least got eight.

[ ✎ All three signs for them becoming leaders were faked
Redscar was told by Snowstar to decide on a leader. Redscar did and StarClan agreed. He faked the sign to please the Clan.
The sign for Tigerstar was faked by Jaggedtooth so he could be leader.]

I think it has to do with the warrior code is worded.
The code states: “the deputy shall become the new leader when the old clan Leader dies or retires.”
Even though it was a bit of an odd case, Pinestar fit the idea of retirement because he willingly stepped down (and gave up his leader name). Other clan leaders have died and their deputies received their nine lives. However, Brokenstar’s case didn't fit either definition (he didn't retire on his own will, and he wasn't dead), so Nightstar was not accepted as leader.
Also, Brokenstar does mention he has nine lives to Firestar (Firepaw at the time) in Into the Wild. But knowing who Brokenstar is, he could've just said that to scare the apprentice, so we don't know how many lives he really had. He could've been a lot less than nine, and possibly Yellowfang picked up on that when he was captured.
In either case, he had two lives when he was captured by Thunderclan, because Yellowfang mentions that he's losing a life after the battle that blinds him, and then feeds him deathberries on his last life. He's not mentioned as losing any lives in between those two.
