Chapter 1- The End to a Boring LifeTuesday Beep, beep, beep. The alarm went off when the time read 6:00. With the sun not yet peeking over the horizon, the windows revealed only darkness past the curtains. The room was cloaked with shadows that tricked the eyes into thinking something was there. However, the only thing currently in the dark room was a teenage girl who had pulled her covers over her head at the beeping of the alarm. The alarm was persistent. With a loud groan, the girl threw the covers off of her. Standing, she nearly tripped over some clothes that were still scattered on the floor from the night before, and finally slammed her hand on the alarm, turning it off. Stumbling back to her still-warm bed, the girl crashed onto it, trying to fall back into the dream she had. But it was too late, she was awake, and the dream was already fading from memory. Soon it would be gone, as if it was never there, leaving the girl wishing for more then a faded remembrance of the excitement that happened.
Ava was a senior in highschool, just turning 17 during the summer. She hated her life. It was too normal, too boring. She had a mother, a father, an older sister, just a normal family. While there were people who wished they could have her life, she wished for more. Not the ambitious, money-grabbing more, but the adventurous, near-death more that had a person on edge. She wished for it, yet she couldn't have it. She was just a normal, boring girl. Nothing more, nothing less.
And so, this normal, boring girl drove to school in her parent's normal, boring car, parking in the normal, boring parking lot and heading to normal, boring class, not realizing how much her life was about to change.
---
Tick, tick, tick. Each second, the hand of the clock moved. It moved slowly, to slowly, ticking up to the twelve at the top. Tick. Another minute gone, and another to begin. It was agonizing to watch the clock, yet to Ava it was much easier than watching the teacher at the front drone on about the history and government. He spoke and spoke, flicking through the slides in the front of the classroom as fast as the clock moved. This could easily take first place for the worst class, but Ava needed the credit in order to pass. And so she stared at the clock as yet another minute passed. "Ava!" At the sound of her name, the girl's eyes flicked back forward, but it was not the teacher that had said it. Instead, it was a girl sitting at the desk to her left. This girl was Ava's friend, and yet was not. She was the friend that Ava most loathed, the friend that complained about everything yet had a life everyone wanted. This girl was Mia, the captain of the girls swim team, first chair violin of orchestra, and solo singer in choir. She had top grades, and was thinking of going to an IVY league college. Ava turned her attention to her friend. The other girl waited until their teacher's back was towards them, before slipping a note. Typical of her to turn to the middle school way of communication, passing notes. With a small sigh, Ava found herself opening the crumpled paper and reading the small scribbles that was Mia's handwriting. Are you ready for the dance next Friday?
This led to another sigh and a mutter about how much she hated her life. The dance was just an ordinary dance, where the highschool boys asked the highschool girls. Ava had always gone with a group of friends, but this year was different. This year, normal, boring Ava was going alone. All her friends were asked to the dance, while normal, boring Ava was left out and forgotten.
As she looked back over at her friend-not-friend, who was still awaiting an answer, the girl scribbled a hasty no on the paper and sent it back. Then, in order to avoid a reply on the note, she pulled out her notes and started to jot down what was written on the board in front of her. Her eyes soon drifted back to the clock. She found herself fighting to keep her eyes open, staring as the clock ticked of another excruciating minute.
---
Ding, ding, ding. The bell rung, signaling the end of the period, and bringing Ava back to the classroom. At that moment, every student in the class dumped their notebooks and papers into their bags, standing to leave. It was that moment that changed everything. Ring, ring, ring. The phone in their class rang loudly. No one knew that it was doing the same thing as every single classroom in the school. The student whose hand was on the door paused. A silence seemed to echo the class as the teacher picked up the phone. The students watched his face drain of color, and watched as he quietly hung up. "It's a lockdown," He said, pushing the student out of the way and locking the door. His hand was noticeably shaking. In that moment, everyone in the class knew that this wasn't a drill. This was real. Someone was in the school. All at once, Ava and the rest of the class hid their bags. They went to the side of the room that was closest to the door, pressing against it as the teacher turned off the lights, making it appear as if no one was there. Ava, along with a few other girls, ducked underneath the table that was pushed against the wall. Her mind reeled. These things didn't happen to her. Not now, not ever. Something like this only happened in other schools, never her own. Even in the midst of her fear, Ava couldn't help but feel the excitement, her mind running through every possible scenario. She almost wanted to be found.
--- Tap, tap, tap. Footsteps echoed in the hall outside of the classroom. All of the students held their breath in fear. The footsteps stopped. The entire class stared at the door as they heard the handle start to turn before the lock stopped it. Suddenly, a deafening sound exploded in the air, and the door was blast open. Without meaning to, most of the class let out a scream.
"Out! Out!" Men holding guns pointed the weapons at the class as more shots and screams could be heard in the hall. The men forced the class and the teacher into the hall where other men were emptying the other classrooms. Once out, the men forced the students to the ground, making them sit. It appeared to be a hostage situation.
Ava glanced around, seeing that no one dared to move an inch. Of course, everyone was afraid that the men would kill them. All they could do was wait, and so they did.
The police showed up outside the school not long after. The school was surrounded, but that was pointless. The men did not plan to escape, keeping the hostages on the floor where they could keep an eye on them.
The police made their move. The phones in the school rang. When answered, the police asked their questions, the men made their demands. And then they waited once more.
A man moved in towards the hostages. Ava could only notice that he was slightly smaller than the others, though his face was hidden. She watched him, noticing he was headed for where her class waited. Her heart skipped a beat, and she could only think, Please not me, please not me.
"Get up," He growled, pointing his gun in her face. She could only stare, wishing for once that it wasn't her. "Get up!" He yelled again, grabbing her arm and dragging her to her feet. She couldn't speak, frozen in fear. The man gestured to the others, and the other men nodded, allowing him to drag her away. She stumbled, trying to keep her feet as the man pulled her out of the sight of everyone else. Finally, he paused.
"Are you ready?" He suddenly asked. Ava could only notice that he sounded much younger, possibly only a boy. She only stared at him with shock, before he pulled off the mask. The girl stared at him, unable to help the fact that she found him cute. The boy had slightly longer black hair, and his eyes looked deeper than space. Somehow, she found her voice.
"R-ready for what?" She stammered, causing the boy to smile.
"Are you ready to get out of here, out of this normal, boring life?" The boy asked her again. She had no idea what to say, what to do. He seemed to sense this, and held out a hand. "If you are ready, then let's go."
Without knowing what she was doing, Ava, a normal, boring girl, took the stranger's hand, and was gone, not knowing where she was going, or if she would ever return, leaving behind all she had ever known.
