Every paperback book I've owned has gotten destroyed so that's a big no for me.

it depends on the series/how they look; I like some books better as paperback and others as hardcover

I like paperbacks a whole lot more, mostly because I'm really cheap and also broke and hardbacks cost so much more. They're also pretty much impossible to find, since I read pretty much exclusively in English and live in Sweden. Buying books online is always an option, and usually what I end up doing, but the paperbacks are ten times cheaper (at times literally) and so much easier to ship. I love hardbacks as well, but they're harder to get and harder for me to read comfortably.

Depends on the book - if it's something I'm not gonna re-read as often or not care about so much, then paperback. For the most part I prefer hardcover, though. I've had to replace all the first five books in my Harry Potter collection since they were literally in pieces (my parents made me wait till they were in paperback because they were so expensive), and my Warriors first-series is starting to get in mostly the same shape, so I'll have to think about finding hardcovers of those too.

I hate the feeling of the plastic jackets on some hardcovers but beyond that I don't really care

I think hardcovers are more visually pleasing, but they are also more expensive, so unless it's something I really want (or I get it as a gift) I usually wait til it comes out in paperback. Plus hardcovers are heavy if I'm carrying it around and stuff.

hmm tough question
hardcover as you have said are a lot harder to damage and hold a certain degree of formality that i love at the same time, paperbacks tend to be a lot smaller and thus more suited for travel or being carried around. also a lot less expensive so i don't mind them getting a little messed up. plus, they show wear, which i love.

i prefer paperback - it's cheaper (tho i actually waaaaay prefer going to the library than buying books from b&n so i rarely buy actual fiction books from bookstores. last time i used a $25 b&n giftcard to buy a music theory book lmao) - it has a nicer/less intimidating feel to it. more like a close friend whereas hardcovers feel like employers at a job interview or something - oftentimes smaller/more portable
the only con for me is the way the cover curves upward after i've been reading and it bothers me a lot >:u (at the same time, it's kinda cool when u can tell someone's been reading a book!)

Hardback would be my preference if it wasn't for the extra price
