So, I just finished Cowboy Bebop and I'm craving another anime like it. I'd like a more serious tone to whatever the suggestion is but I am open to mild humor. I just don't care much for comedic television or stupid jokes. Sorry. I've an issue, also, with fantasy plots but I'm totally accepting of all genres. I just prefer sci-fi plots is all.
If you haven't see it yet, I totally recommend Cowboy Bebop! It's undoubtedly the best anime I've seen up-to-date. <3

Seraph of the End. If you like murder mystery go Dangan Ronpa If you're willing to go comedy The Devil Is A Part-Timer and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Or if you want something more dark go Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

If you haven't seen it, Attack on Titan is good; just know that there's some violence, especially toward the start. Its first season is out - 23 or 24 episodes I think - and I just finished watching it this weekend.
It's about how the remainder of humanity lives within a walled region, and outside roam creatures called titans, which are shaped like gigantic humans, but are mindless and crave human flesh. Then a titan apparently showing intelligence breaches the walls, and all the survivors are forced to retreat to the next inner wall. Knowing that their time is limited if they just sit and do nothing while waiting for another attack, the main characters join up with their military and train to combat the titans, and as they try to take back what is theirs, they discover secret abilities and try to discover the truth behind the titans and their world.
I'm currently obsessed with the second opening; I especially love the part from 0:40 on. It gives the sense of the characters' bravery and hope and valor through their perilous situation.

steins;gate is, in my opinion (and the opinions of those on mal) one of the best anime of all time, if u haven't seen it yet cx it has a mature theme and is based around science and logic in a real world setting. the main theme is time travel! I especially love the game because it goes in depth about the different time travel theories and related subjects like the theory of relativity. the first few episodes are known to be a bit slow-paced, however the show is a masterpiece overall in the way everything is revealed. one of the only shows to make me cry that hard.
the characters are also really lovable haha, and instead of the typical high school teenagers, this show features young adults in the science community/ just weird neets with chuunibyou PFFT
I've watched it seven times through (it has 24 episodes). And also bought/played the game twice. The second season (Steins;gate 0) is coming out soon (hopefully) and the game recently had its English release cx so i'm pretty hyped~~

Gurren Lagann and Psycho pass are two of my favorites but if you are in the mood for something recent, Re:Zero is a really amazing fantasy anime that is the best i've watched in a while

(Following up on what jay said, Re:Zero was produced by the same company as Steins;Gate-- White Fox. Both have time travel themes and similar elements. Not to mention great animation and music. [re:zero is obviously better because of how recent it is animation-wise, but //shrugs] Anywho, Re;Zero is a great show but it IS based in a fantasy/magic setting. HOWEVER I also am very adverse to fantasy and am more into psychological genres, but Re:zero was an entertaining watch for me due to a mingling of many genres.)
warning if you DO get into re:zero by any chance: the fans are awful. AWFUL. they will make u hate the show. so just... don't pay attention to them if you wanna enjoy the actual thing c'x they're those fans who, when you're talking about your favorite character from your favorite show, sneak into the comment section completely out of nowhere and for no reason to say "lol then you DEFINITELY haven't seen re:Zero lololol bc the characters are soo much better lmmmaoooo rem for lyfe" They make me want to... idk squish a straw or something. no-one wants u in the dangan ronpa/steins;gate/higurashi comment sections u re:zero brats :/// but ANYWAY now that I'm done venting. it's p good for a story in a fantasy setting.
but steins;gate is better c; (<- i'm editing bc this is a joke and idk if it was as obvious as i wanted it to be c'x this is totally just my opinion pfft)

Full metal Alchemist is a pretty good show with darker themes. Plus the plot is very.. Nice and while it's got fantasy elements, it still remains rather realistic. I'd recommend brotherhood but at the same time, the original is kinda. Like Idk but it's something.
