Everybody's gotta start somewhere; I started about four years ago and it's been a wild ride since then.
I'd love to help teach you some of the basics, and if you'd like then we could try to go from there. I just want to say that it gets easier the more you do it; there may seem to be a lot of rules and it may be really confusing at first, but you'll get used to it.

Some terms to get familiar with:
OOC = Out Of Character. This is anything that is not part of your RP. This is usually marked with brackets of some kind, such as (()) or [[]]. Ex: Jim bought a donut. ((By the way, I’m not going to be able to reply next friday.))
IC = In Character. Opposite of OOC.
Canon = Characters from a fandom.
OC = Your own “Original Character”.
Godmodding = Making your character too strong or powerful. Ex: Jim speaks ten languages, can summon donuts at will, and can eat a million donuts in one sitting.
Powerplaying = Acting as other people’s characters or using outside knowledge. Ex: Jim bought a donut from Stacy and hands her the money when she asks for it, ignoring the mean look she gave him. ((If Stacy isn’t the one replying here, the person RPing Jim cannot control Stacy’s actions. Why? Because it’s just downright rude to play other people’s characters.))
Metagaming = This isn’t as bad as the other two, but still a big no no. It’s using outside knowledge to your character’s advantage. Ex: Stacy hated Jelly donuts. “Can I get you a peanut butter donut instead, Stacy?” Jim asked. ((If Stacy doesn’t flat out say she hates jelly donuts at some point, Jim can’t know that information.))
Forms = A character sheet/Reference. People sometimes ask for these. They often are just your character’s physical description. Ex: [Name] [Gender] [Age] [Eye Colour] [Body] [Personality]
Time Skip = Very literal, this one is. Jumping past a scene because people are just sleeping, or maybe because something violent and/or inappropriate is happening.
Advanced/Literate = Meaning bigger post length and proper grammar. There is a wide range for people’s post size (I’ve seen anywhere from one sentence to twenty paragraphs) and it really depends on what you can write. Most Advanced/Literate RPers ask for three to six paragraphs (or about twenty lines), but it varies.
One Liners = Some people like to RP with these, but it’s frowned upon by many. It doesn’t always mean a single line; it’s any reply that’s really short and hard to respond to. In other words, the RP equivalent of sending a long text and receiving a ‘k’.
Plots = Basic setup/plan for the events of the RP. These can be written in a form or just thrown out there. Ex: Character 1 and Character 2 sell donuts at a shop together. What happens when 2 gets fired and needs to crash at 1’s house?
Starter = The first RP post. Typically describes setting first, and then goes into the first person’s character. Preferences = Details people have to clarify if they want to have something specific in the RP.
As for RP manners, there are a few things to consider: -State whether or not you’re very active. It’s helpful for people to know when they’re expected to reply, etc. -Always say if you’d prefer to do advanced RPing or not. It’s always disappointing if someone comes in expecting three paragraphs and gets a one liner in response.
Things to ask before starting; “Do you want forms?” “Should I post the starter?” “PM or nah?” Also ask people genre preferences, character gender preferences, and if they have a specific character in a plot they want. It's just polite so that nobody gets upset.
That's most of the basics I can think of off the top of my head. If you've got questions, hit me.

*waves* Here's some more RP terms (I mostly RP on Tumblr, so I don't know if these are in use on the forums):
AR = Alternate Reality (similar to AU)
AU = Alternate Universe. This is a term for a universe that deliberately deviates from the canon. Can be a minor deviation, or a large one. Or something in between.
MV = Multi-Verse.
Multi-Ship = multiple relationships for a muse; each ship generally exists in its own universe/timeline.
Mun = the person behind the muse/character
Muse = your character
FC = Face Claim (the person—usually a celebrity—that serves as your character's face/avatar). For example, Buffy's FC is Sarah Michelle-Gellar; Dean Winchester's FC is Jensen Ackles, etc.
Headcanon = details or thoughts about your character that aren't stated in-canon and you've made up yourself.
Mary-Sue = Any original female character which is too perfect, too extreme, and, in general, badly done. (Canon Mary Sues do exist, but they're harder to identify.) Male counterpart is known as a Marty Sue or Gary Stu.

I can roleplay with you! Do you know what plots you'd like to do, interests you have? The books you like to read and the shows you like to watch are generally the type of stuff you'd like to roleplay.
I have some plots, but if you have any suggestions or idea about what you'd be into, I can cull down my list.
