It all depends on how you learn! I'm a visual and auditory learner, so I usually take notes, rewrite the notes, make flashcards, ask someone else to read my notes aloud and quiz me on them, and then repeat until I feel comfortable - one round is usually enough for me. My brother has an easier time taking in information when he's moving, so he runs and listens to lecures as he goes.
Something that works for most people I know, though, regardless of learning style, is sitting down with someone else and teaching them what you've learned. That way you're not only using your knowledge (which is really helpful when it comes to remembering it) but you'll be asked questions and you'll be able to elaborate in a way which absolutely does help people understand, which is great for points on tests. It's also an organic way of studying, it can be very similar to any other discussion where you know more than someone else, and you'll find the areas you're not as strong on and be able to figure out what you need to go into more. It's great, I try to do it a few days before any test I take.
