BEFORE YOU READ THIS: i don't want to start a flame war. this is a discussion about religion, the lgbtqia+ community, and a few other things. i'd like to keep this as polite as possible, and while this is a rant, i still don't want anyone getting upset. also: i used google for a couple quick searches of stats and stuff, and if they're wrong and you tell me such i'm super sorry! i'm just a sad eighteen year old using google.
yk what makes me upset? the fact that we can't seem to get along and accept people's opinions
tbh i really don't care about lgbtqia+ stuff, it doesn't really effect me so i'm not going to be 'against' it or whatever, but i'm a christian. my parents and sister are christians. my parents are against it, but me and my sister don't really care, it's not effecting us, and if other people are being happy then why not let them? we don't truly have any proof there's a heaven or a hell or even a god (and while i think it makes a lot more sense then evolution let's not get into that. and aside from science, and the amount of proof out there that does support it, we can't truly prove there's a heaven or hell until we're dead and even then! we can't come down and prove it lol)
so it's like, why shouldn't i respect someone who's trans or gay or nonbinary? why shouldn't i respect a woman who's married to another woman? i'm respecting them for them, not bc they're gay or trans or bi or ace. my parents have a saying: "hate the sin, love the sinner," though that's probably a common saying. if it is a sin, or if it's not, i'm going to love them for them. being homophobic or transphobic about something like that is stupid.
but on the other side of the spectrum, i see people who support the lgbtqia+ community (or are part of it!) hating on christians.
i'm not saying there aren't "christians" who hate on gay people (note the quotation marks - as far as i'm concerned, that's not showing god's love and thus i think they're not truly christians.) how many people have been driven out of their churches, or driven to commit suicide, or made to feel incredibly unwelcome because of their s*xual or gender orientation? how many people have been forced to stop believing in their religions, or deny themselves, because of who they are? i don't know how many, exactly, but i'm pretty sure it's a huge number.
i'm not saying that every person in the lgbtqia+ community is hating on christians (or other religions!) either. according to a quick google search: "Eighty-three percent of Americans identify themselves as Christians. Most of the rest, 13 percent, have no religion. That leaves just 4 percent as adherents of all non-Christian religions combined — Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and a smattering of individual mentions." if 83 percent of americans identify as christians, that PROBABLY means some of them are gay, trans, or etc themselves. and why would you hate on your own religion? (then again, let's not get into the "false christians" thing bc there are "christians" who identify as such who really aren't, and that could take up a lot of those numbers and we wouldn't know.)
but it's like... just bc my religion says it's wrong doesn't mean i should be throwing that in your face, telling you that your gender isn't a real thing, making you feel bad about yourself. if you want to be known with male pronouns and you were born a girl, i'm going to call you by those and by the name you want to be called by. because i respect you and your decisions/life choices! (i'm not saying that being trans is a decision, before anyone asks)
and just because my religion says it's wrong doesn't mean you should be saying i'm homophobic. i'm not. i'm not going to use the "i know gay people" excuse (i don't actually know if i know gay people or not but i know some people on the spectrum) to prove i'm not homophobic. tbh i can't really prove i'm not. i'm not going to go out of my way to stop people from getting married. i'm not going to do anything to stop equal love or whatever it's called.
(on a side note: can we discuss the term homophobic/homophobia? the word phobia itself means "an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something" and every single time someone says it i think of it as a fear?? we really need a better word for people who hate homosexuals and stuff. like, idk, bigoted could work? bigot: "a person who is intolerant toward those holding different opinions.")
but there's a big problem here, because sometimes i read thread and feel like people are being prosecuted (note: this word doesn't quite fit here but i couldn't think of a better word.) the religious people and the lgbtqia+ community alike are being discriminated against, in the real world and on here. and that makes me really angry to be honest, because this is a free country, with free speech, and you should be allowed to believe what you like without being hated on! you should be allowed to love who you like and practice what you like and go to church if you like without having to feel like you're being discriminated against!
(apologies to people who aren't in the usa, i'm simply assuming the majority of people reading this are.)
but the question here is: why can't we accept each other's opinions? ESPECIALLY ON HERE! this SHOULD be a safe place for everyone, and there are people who feel uncomfortable and unsafe on here. it shouldn't be this big a deal. but it is. we're kids, or young adults, or whatever you want to call us and we shouldn't have to worry about this. we should feel safe here.
this should be a safe place. but for a lot of people, it isn't.
(honestly i'm mainly talking about the lgbtqia+ community right here: some feel like this isn't a safe place. i'm so very sorry for that, you should be safe to talk about what you want to and be yourself here.)
let me say it: CHRISTIANS SHOULD NOT BE DISCRIMINATING AGAINST THE LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY AND VICE VERSA. it makes me so angry when i see people being discriminated against in any regard (gender, color, orientation, religion, whatever.)
i'm sick and tired of seeing christians tell someone their gender isn't real and that there's a gender binary, because to them it IS real. i'm sick and tired of seeing someone hate on someone's religion because it says being gay is a sin (maybe they don't agree with that, and even if they do, unless they bring it up first you shouldn't be bringing it up either.) i'm sick and tired of seeing people feel depressed and wish they were dead because my religion says that they're going to hell for who they are.
i'm really sick and tired of feeling sick and tired over this! it's an opinion! the fact that i'm getting angry over other people not being able to have opinions makes me even more angry.
"a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge." that's what an opinion is. i may not believe in your opinion, i may not agree with it, but i will defend to my last breath your right to say it and believe it.
