I just realized this while looking at the thread @aquathepiplup just posted about Brokenstar. I made this thread because I didn't want to hijack your thread with an unrelated topic.
Okay, so it is stated that Brokenstar was born evil because he was a punishment for SkyClan being driven out of the forest. But thinking about it... this doesn't make any sense. The Clans had nothing to do with SkyClan being driven out of the forest: Twolegs did. Sure, they refused to give up their territory, but they had every right to. The Clans already have trouble supporting themselves on their land, so how could two different Clans ever cope in the same space? The only available spot for them is the stretch of land behind ShadowClan's territory, but that would still distance SkyClan from the others.
The only other option for SkyClan would for the Clan to split up and join the other Clans like Birdflight and her kits. But even then the Clan would cease to exist, so what would be the point.
Either way, SkyClan was screwed so I don't understand why Brokenstar was sent to punish the Clans.

Probably in Firestars quest, I think it was Bluestar that told Firestar.

I personally liked the concept of it. SkyClan itself suffered during the journey alone, as shown in the visions Firestar had in Firestar's Quest and again when the rats began to attack, eventually causing them to disband and become extinct. Brokenstar was the perfect punishment for the Clans, especially since they indirectly caused SkyClan's extinction.
ShadowClan of course suffered the most because Brokenstar was their leader. Note that it was a ShadowClan cat who said that SkyClan didn't belong in the forest, and ShadowClan also had the largest territory out of the five Clans in the forest.
WindClan got driven out, just like SkyClan did. Note that WindClan was the harshest of the four Clans when SkyClan needed help.
ThunderClan was attacked by them twice, killed Lionheart, Spottedleaf, and Rosetail, and kidnapped Brackenfur, Cinderpelt, Brightheart and Thornclaw when they were kits. ThunderClan were also the ones who took land from SkyClan when they desperately needed it most and the stolen kits represent SkyClan having to leave behind two of their own kits.
RiverClan probably suffered the least compared to the other Clans since all Brokenstar did to them was demand territory, but note that territory was the very thing that Birchstar, though sympathetic, refused to give up.

Probably in Firestars quest, I think it was Bluestar that told Firestar. No. Bluestar told Firestar about the existence of SkyClan. Brokenstar being a punishment for the Clans was stated in the prologue of Yellowfang's Secret by Molepelt to Featherpaw.

But why were the Clans punished for something Twolegs did? That is what I can't understand. If they had banded together and drove SkyClan away by force I would understand. But for simply refusing land and being rude? I don't really get it. It just seems like a strange punishment, especially for something that happened so long before. If StarClan wanted to punish the Clans, why not do it to the cats who were actually alive when SkyClan left?

I never thought of that...
I never liked the idea anyway. It's honestly stupid to punish cats who never heard of SkyClan instead of the cats that refused to help them (which as you pointed out they couldn't really do anyway)

They probably had a punishment, but that would've been years before Brokenstar was born. The punishment would've been for not letting SkyClan join or share territory with the rest of the Clans.

Well I mentioned this once but it applies here.
The reason why the Clans may have been punished was to punish the leaders who forced SkyClan to leave. Yes they were long dead, but they were the reason SkyClan had to leave the forest.
Sure Twolegs destroyed their territory but no Clan made an attempt to help SkyClan, a Clan who had been around as long as their Clans had been.
ShadowClan could have actually gave up the territory they don't hunt in to SkyClan. In Yellowfang's Secret, Yellowfang asked why there was a part of their territory they never hunted in, and was told that they just didn't hunt there. It wasn't like there wasn't a lot of prey there or more dangerous then the rest of the territory, they just never patrolled or hunted that part of their territory. So basically ShadowClan was greedy and could have spared SkyClan the suffering they endured if they had just given up a part of that territory.
WindClan told them to leave and were the most aggressive toward them.
ThunderClan agreed with them leaving but gave shelter to the SkyClan cats that stayed behind
And RiverClan seemed the most sympathetic but were going through a food shortage so they couldn't give up any part of their territory.
If you think about it, Brokenstar did punish each Clan according to how they treated SkyCLan. He drove out WindClan, He stole kits from ThunderCLan (symbolizing the kits that essentially taken from SkyClan because they were left behind) RiverClan simply gave up the territory they couldn't give SkyClan back then and ShadowClan were forced to suffer because of their greed.
Why so many years later? My guess would have to do with SkyClan being destroyed. SkyClan did manage to live on for a few years before they were forced to disband. I feel like the punishment was a result of no living cat remembering SkyCLan (except Skywatcher) so to punish the CLans for not trying to keep the Five CLans together and for allowing the memory of SkyCLan to completely die out (Not just with the four remaining CLans but also the SkyClan cats) Brokenstar was the result.
