I noticed when people talk about certain characters like Dovewing & Ivypool, Squirrelflight & Ashfur, or even Daisy & Brightheart, they don't bother reading or trying to look at what the characters say. Characters like Ivypool, Brightheart & Ashfur are so popular and loved that the readers ignore the other POVs (EX: Dovewing, Squirrelflight, Daisy).
For example: "Dovewing acts like she's better than her sister!"
This isn't true. Dovewing never acted or even thought she was better than her sister. In fact, Dovewing's the type of character who always brings herself down, and feels guilty about something that isn't even her fault. And that's a big flaw for her character, for the people who see her as a 'mary-sue'. I know that Dovewing said to Ivypool as an apprentice that she's jealous of her being with Tigerheart, but Ivypool already put her into a lot of pressure and she was already stressed enough that her sister didn't listen to her about Tigerstar. Dovewing has legit reasons for her behavior. And besides, it's not like Ivypool hasn't said plenty of times that she wanted to be better than her sister. In fact, Ivypool's thoughts about being "better than her sister" is important to the plot because the Dark Forest took advantage of that jealousy and tried to lure her away from the Clans and make her betray them.
"Daisy stole Cloudtail from Brightheart!"
Daisy never stole Cloudtail from Brightheart. Brightheart should have spoken about her feelings during the situation, and Cloudtail should have also spent time with his mate. All characters were at fault for not speaking up. In fact, Leafpool is the one who spoke up and told Cloudtail to spend time with Brightheart!
And.. ugh, do I need to explain Ashfur X Squirrelflight? I think not.
Anyway, I just noticed that when people like a character, they don't bother digging deeper into the other character's POV and try to understand the situation or their behavior. Like, I'm already almost done with Night Whispers and I'm finally starting to understand Ivypool's behavior a little more and, as I predicted, so far on my neutral side. However, due to her poorly written development and unbearable behavior, Ivypool's still not exactly my favorite, at least as an apprentice as of now. But I completely understand her now. She felt left out and cats treated her with disrespect (EX: Blossomfall, as an apprentice, comparing her to her sister) and cats separated her and Dovewing. I just really dislike the foolish choices Ivypool's made in her life, much like Leafpool, but Ivypool is a tolerable character for me as of now. She's alright, and I'm starting to understand her more.
I just wish people would try to dig into all POVs instead of just their favorite character or the character they like. They should try to understand their actions and behavior. It's okay to dislike the character, but there should be more of a reason other than because you are paying attention to one particular POV and completely ignoring the other.
