I really like Squirrelflight. I think she's probably one of the best written characters that aren't just thrown in the background for the sake of the plot. Squirrelflight was an important main character in TNP, and she had good development. She was feisty, not afraid to stand up for herself, but Squirrelflight also cared about her Clan and she was very loyal too.
Squirrelflight started off as an obnoxious brat. She was rude, she constantly broke the rules and refused to listen to anyone. A lot of people don't like her because of this, but this behavior is normal. Imagine this situation in the human world. Children don't listen. Sometimes they are even rude and they misbehave. Squirrelflight was basically a child around this age. And as Mothflight said, she probably behaves like this because cats expected her to be their perfect apprentice. There was even a scene when Squirrelpaw asks Brambleclaw if he's afraid that she'll just disappoint him and not be their leader's "shining example", or something similar to that. I haven't read TNP in ages, so bear with me for my mistakes.
I think the journey helped Squirrelflight mature a lot and she even began to grow feelings for Brambleclaw. Now, they began to fight a lot about Hawkfrost. Squirrelflight was a jerk when she judged him, but in the end, she did understand him when Brambleclaw used Leafpool as an example. Also, did anyone ever think that Squirrelflight may have possibly been harsh with him because she was jealous that he spent so much time with his brother? Knowing Squirrelflight, she isn't exactly the most mature character, so of course her emotions are going to blow up everywhere. She may have become more responsible around this time but she was still maturing and developing her personality. Squirrelflight didn't really mature until she began to raise the Three.
Now, onto the lie with her and Leafpool. Squirrelflight did agree to help her, but it was Yellowfang who manipulated Squirrelflight to believe that she was barren, and that's messed up, tbh. Leafpool dragged her sister into her problems and her life just fell apart after the truth came out. Leafpool got back everything sooner than Squirrelflight did after the lie. Squirrelflight had to work twice as hard to earn Bramblestar back as her mate. It took Bramblestar years for him to realize why Squirrelflight wanted to help her sister until Bramblestar's Storm came out. Cats always gave Squirrelflight the cold shoulder, just because she tried to do what she thought was best, because she's been lied to by a StarClan cat. Squirrelflight's life was very hard. She had to deal with the guilt of hurting Ashfur (which wasn't even her fault), lost the Three, and her Clan's trust in her. And yet Leafpool got off scott-free. Leafpool wasn't even punished, really - she dropped her own rank. Firestar didn't drop it for her. Squirrelflight was the one who was truly punished, and she had to work hard to get everything back.
Now, I really don't like the fact that she had a litter of her own, however it doesn't bother me too much. But the Erins really need to stop giving Squirrelflight misery in her life. I mean, now she's lost two of her kittens as well as her mother, and Leafpool may even die soon in this arc.
Squirrelflight lost Ashfur, the Three (until they forgave her in TLH), her father, her mother, and two of her kittens. She's had a hard life, but she's still one of the best written characters. Squirrelflight didn't mope around like Leafpool did. She waited until everyone forgave her and even stood up to Brambleclaw in TLH when he said he was angry that she lied to him. Squirrelflight stayed strong. She didn't let life ruin her feisty personality.
