I've wanted to start writing more blog-like posts about things that I find interesting. I'm going to start with language!
I think a lot about language and how we should use it. I think that the key to language is to make a point and to make people understand that point. If you say something and people don't understand you, then you have failed to use language correctly. If people don't understand you, then why speak at all.
You might disagree with this, I know people that do. But imagine that I say something in a language that you don't understand, would I have used language correctly? I don't think so as I have failed to get my point across.
I am, right here, going on the record saying don't use complicated words. It gets in the way of being understood.
At this stage, I feel that I need to bring grammar up. If you break the rules of grammar it will get in the way of the point. However, it won't always. As long as you are understood then, to me, you have used language correctly. Bear in mind that grammar is a standard set of rules that will allow you point to be understood, so it is probably best to use them.
Anyway, what I've learnt is that language should be kept simple. I've also learnt that you should listen to the point, not how the point was said.
I want to leave you with a quote, can't remember who said it. "If you can't explain it simply, then you don't know it well enough."
Thoughts on this are welcome. Whether those thoughts are on language, on things that I should discuss in the future, or about anything else I want to hear it!
