Featherkit nestled down in the nursery, falling right to sleep once more.
"Sounds great!" Oakfall said. "I could use a nice, long patrol. Lead the wat, Vixenflame!"

"As amazing as that sounds, now isn't the time for us to be sleeping in." Shortcloud conceded and stretched her legs before stepping out of the den. She fluffed her fur at the chill that went down her body from the cold. "ShadowClan needs us. Let's hope for something resembling normalcy today..." “Yeah, I got you.” Brittlefoot finally relented, slowly pulling himself up on shaky paws as he gave a low grunt of exertion. “Never gets any better, but at least it’s not worse either.” He sighed, glancing around the den. Stormfury surely had been buried by now, and now the Camp felt somber. Shortcloud hummed. "I suppose there's a silver lining to that. You up for a patrol?" she asked. Despite the long night, she felt ready to take action so others could rest longer.

Brittlefoot nodded, glancing over to where Cardinalblaze seemed ready to explode out of his fluffed out fur. Scoffing once with a laugh, he asked Shortcloud as they padded closer. "Did something happen? He looks more embarrassed than an apprentice stuck in a mud hole."

Shortcloud couldn't stop the laugh that slipped from her jaws at the sight of the flustered deputy. "I've never seen anything like this! What happened to you?" Glancing back at Brittlefoot with amusement, she added, "Cat got your tongue?"

Shortcloud couldn't stop the laugh that slipped from her jaws at the sight of the flustered deputy. "I've never seen anything like this! What happened to you?" Glancing back at Brittlefoot with amusement, she added, "Cat got your tongue?" “Kinkfire, apparently.” Cardinalblaze sighed lightly as Brittlefoot and Shortcloud approached. He gave a faintly cowed look, tired and a bit sheepish. “I tried to say she wasn’t feeling well, she looked like she wasn’t, and well.” He sighed, before mumbling a bit. “She was totally sick, but. Forget it.” Straightening up, he mewed. “If you want a patrol, I’d like you to do some hunting in the marshes close to camp. Border patrols are all set, and the far hunting is good. Something closer to camp and central territory should work.” He nodded.

What Ashrock was trying to say seemed to dawn on Stonesong. “Ashrock.. you loving them did not make them die.” She said gently. “And you having feelings for me won’t make me die either. I’m not going anywhere.” She promised. Ashrock tensed instinctively. "I didn't say I had--" he bit his tongue, though. He didn't outright say it, but he had been trying to imply it. He paced another pass before plopping down against the camp wall. He glared out at the camp. Cardinalblaze sending out patrols. Ashrock should be on one, but he had to deal with these fox-dunged feelings Snowdance drudged up. StarClan, was that his sister over there? She looked awful. "I have rotten luck," Ashrock stated bluntly. "I don't want to go through that again, but I'd rather not see you with some frog-brain like Eaglesight or Raccoonrunner." He cleared his throat and still couldn't look at her. "You helped me make it through, Stonesong." Stonesong felt her fur warm when he told her she had helped him. She looked away embarrassedly. “Oh I doubt that. You seemed to manage alright.” She spoke shyly. “Just because you have rotten luck doesn’t mean you don’t deserve something good to happen, Ashrock.”

Shortcloud blinked in surprised acknowledgement. By totally sick, he meant kits? Never thought I'd see Kinkfire with kits at her paws. "Ha... I understand completely. As if Kinkfire already wouldn't have clawed your nose." She looked to Brittlefoot with a nod. "We'll make your life easy and be on our way. Right?"

Ravenflight gave a small nod as he continued to weave in the brambles, "I suppose it makes sense though. Cliffheart is Lavendersky's brother after all." He mewed as he worked, trying to make them as tight as he could. "Lavendersky has been SkyClan's medicine cat for a long time now, it's hard to believe that she'll be joining StarClan soon. But I guess it was only a matter of time." Ravenflight added with a small sigh. "True," Vipertooth nodded. She watched him work for a few moments and then sighed. "I do sympathize with him. I remember when I lost my littermates," she said, shifting a little to make sure she wasn't in his way at all. At least her littermates were in the same clan as her. She didn't have to travel across two territories to say her farewells. "Cliffheart isn't in great condition himself. I wonder how the journey went for him." Ravenflight gave a small nod in agreement, "I know what you mean. Goldenheart died in battle with ThunderClan, and I wish every day that I could have been on that patrol with her." He said, remembering his own sister's passing. Ravenflight gave a small sigh and sat back once he finished patching the hole, giving his work a careful once over to make sure he hadn't missed anything. "I'm sure Snowdance wouldn't have let him go if she didn't think that he was up for the trek. That's probably why Cedarstar sent so many warriors with him, that and Spiderbite is with him too. He might be SkyClan's medicine cat, but he wouldn't let another clan's warrior be harmed in any way."

She shifted to face him and nodded. "That is true. But, I suppose Snowdance nor Cedarstar could have stopped him, even if they tried. It was either let him go with an escort, or risk prey-maulers attacking him and the SkyClan cats on their trek back to SkyClan. With only one good warrior on that patrol, it could have ended quite badly." she said, sweeping her tail over to lay over her front paws.

(one last quickish reply) Kinkfire slowly stood. Her heart was thundering. "No," she stated again. She couldn't look at Snowdance or Stormcloud. "No. No. I can't be expecting kits. You're wrong." Yet, even as she said it, she knew Snowdance was never wrong about this. Kinkfire closed her eyes and took a step back. Her head was spinning. This would ruin everything. The thought quickened her breath with panic. She worked so hard. She trained her heart out to stay matched with her naturally stronger brothers. To make her father proud of her as a warrior. Kits would ruin all of it. "I don't want them." She snapped open her eyes, but they were wide with her internal panic. "I don't want them." Snowdance and Stormcloud exchanged a quick, worried look before the senior warrior stood and slowly stepped up to his mate's side, "Kinkfire, please calm down. I know this is a lot to take in, so we can talk more about it later." He mewed. Stormcloud stepped closer, letting his fur brush against hers comfortingly. Kinkfire's reaction had taken him by surprise, having never seen her react like this before. Snowdance stood up and made her way over to her herb store while Stormcloud worked on trying to get Kinkfire to calm down, pulling out several different herbs for the she-cat. It was clear that she was at the beginning of a panic attack, so the medicine cat wanted to give her something that would help calm her down.

The deputy now turned to make his way over to where Tigerfury was sitting, greeting Littlemoon with a perk of his ears. Her presence seemed to soothe the knot in his belly from Kinkfire’s fiery words. He mewed simply. “Once Closesky comes back, we’ll speak with him. Littlemoon probably told you, Tigerfury, but I want to start some Clan Battle Training. For all of us. There’s no better cat to get on board with it than Closesky, and his apprentices, of course.” Brittlefoot nudged Shortcloud lightly as he moved to get started on their hunting patrol. “I feel bad for him sometimes. There’s no training guide for deputies. And coming after Cloudscar, that’s bound to be rough.” He sighed, inwardly wondering if it was a good idea to name the anxious tom deputy when such difficult times crossed the Clan. He reminded himself though that it was because of Cardinalblaze’s quick orders that so much of the Clan survived the flood.

"I'm sure Cedarstar felt the same way when he followed in Northstar's pawsteps. What better than the very same apprentice you trained to serve as your deputy?” He mused, inwardly wondering if there was a sort of nepotism involved. He ignored the thought. It wasn’t if he would ever qualify as a deputy with his frail body, so he didn’t care much who got the position so long as they did their job.

"Hm," Shortcloud flicked her ear. It was true that Cardinalblaze was Cedarstar's apprentice, and it made sense that he would go for a safe pick. But could he see him eventually succeeding him as Cardinalstar? "A safe choice for Cedarstar. And young, too. It's good to see new blood, and trustworthy new blood at that." she commented. The Dark Forest was always lurking in the hearts and minds of the young; Cardinalblaze didn't seem to have any of that darkness within him.

Palepaw gasped at his mother and suddenly it all came back to him. Prey Maulers attacked on their way to the Moonstone. Moonpetal was taken. "You'll do fine," she reassured the deputy calmly.

"These prey-maulers may be the most dangerous predators we have to face. More than badgers, more than dogs... and they've already taken one of us, and one is more than enough for me." He admitted, mournfully for Moonpetal's sake, before he pushed his anxiety down and decided. "And if that means Closesky pushes me the hardest... well, then, I'll happily do it. Because you're right. Cedarstar doesn't train weak Warriors, and I won't be the cat that ruins that reputation. I sure know Rustlepaw won't either." He lifted his chin up. "We'll give these prey-maulers a nasty surprise the next time they think they can back us into a corner." He glanced gratefully at Littlemoon, her assurance doing wonders to ease his deepset nerves. It was much easier to feel brave, when there were cats who actually seemed to have faith in him. He could do this!... He had to do this...

Shortcloud purred in affection and appreciation for his compliments, stopping as they reached a marshy spot. She knew Brittlefoot was as honest as he could be, and she didn't care what the Clan thought of their likely odd-looking relationship. "And you know I'd say the exact same thing. He didn't thank Starclan for it, but he did thank everything he knew for her. He eyed her with a small chuckle. "I can spend the rest of my life being prodded for my stick legs, my bad bones, but you'll keep me walking." He lifted his muzzle. "Now. Let's see if we can put our prey where our muzzles are and bring back something good."

"You're on." Shortcloud flexed her claws in readiness for a successful hunt. Before she took action, however, she looked back at Brittlefoot with warmth. "I think what you just said is exactly why we work so well together. The compliments and the bringing back prey." She looked back at the marsh that awaited them and scented the air, focusing on finding a frog hopping among the shallow water.

Brittlefoot smirked, nose twitching as his stomach growled. "I can scent a frog nearby. First one I've scented so far, so let's make this one count. I chase, you leap?" He offered, knowing he couldn't do a frog-catching leap without injuring his legs. It was easier to guide it to her.

Shortcloud ran her tongue across her paw as she caught scent of the same frog. "I'll see how far my stubby legs can take me." she joked, though the look in her gaze was serious. Now was the perfect time to bring as much prey as they could find back to their mourning Clan.
