I'm not sure what Firestar meant when he said he feels like Brackenfur isn't the right type. I think Brackenfur would have been a decent deputy. I can't ever see him being leader, but he definitely should have had the deputy rank.

That's the problem though. Firestar said he couldn't see Brackenfur as leader and whoever becomes deputy must be someone he feels could handle being a leader. That's why he didn't go with Brackenfur.
Brackenfur is someone who is good as a temporary deputy or if he was around before the 8th code he would have been a fine permanent deputy.
I feel Brackenfur would have been a fine deputy to have before the 8th code, but not with the modern Clans.

Being a deputy would destroy Brackenfurs character, he was he best background character ever, don't let anything change that

I think Brackenfur was too nice. He might not have been able to make the tough decisions that come with being a leader.

Too nice...Brackenfur was just a generally polite cat, but also willing to put his paw down with tough decisions. And was more than willing to also risk limbs to protect cats in need. Nightstar was a generally nice and polite cat, but look what he did? He launched an attack on his former allies, ThunderClan, just to kill Brokenstar and insert his own brand of justice. Just because a cat is "nice" doesn't mean they're not capable of being stern or fiercely loyal; Whitestorm and Lionheart. |

I think Brackenfur would have been a great deputy--he was levelheaded and had already spent some time organizing patrols; he was a loyal but not battle hungry cat who was willing to help other cats but not at the expense of ThunderClan…
however, while I think he would make an okay leader, I don't think he would be a particularly good one or find it a good role for himself--he did not seem ambitious (aside from his enthusiasm about learning, I guess) or appear to want much authority (he was a fine mentor, but that's a teaching role; he could organize patrols when needed, but he was still subject to Firestar)
so I think he would have been a decent choice in Sunset (considering it would have been entirely reasonable for Firestar to outlive his deputy), although we know now that that would have made him leader
and I think he would be a good stabilizing influence after TLH and there's…no chance he would outlive Bramblestar now…I hope…
