Humankind is stuck in a loop. A group of time travelers goes back in time to see the first humans. They get stuck, and live out the rest of their lives in the past without finding another person. They don't realize they are the first humans themselves. In this loop, every time the group of time travelers goes back in time to unknowingly become the first humans, the world's knowledge of technology and science is boosted.
In the modern-day world, you are an archeologist. You have found the journal of one of those time travelers. And you are discovering the loop.
