So I've been participating in online fan communities for the better part of a decade (maybe like 7 years). In this time, I've learned a lot about how to make fandom a positive experience. I think these tips are important, so I want to share my insight with everyone in case any newer fans want to have a guide to a more positive experience.
1. Don't like, don't read- yes that annoying thing people used to shove on their fanfiction summaries. ", DL;DR" or something. But it is,in a way true, ignore the things you don't like. If something bugs you or bothers you within a fandom, you don't have to participate in that part of the fandom.
2. Before making a comment on a tense subject, make sure you know all the facts. Otherwise you could start a flame war.
3. Surround yourself with the right people. Just like in real life this matters quite a bit. If someone makes you uncomfortable or is rude to people, then don't associate with them.
4. Don't use anonmity as a way to harass- This should be clear, but evidently it isn't.
5. Don't try to purposely stir up drama.
6. You can good around and have fun. But make sure you act at least your age, if not older. Fandom is a subculture filled with all ages. A 13 year old fan will have a much better experience if she doesn't make the 19 year old members of the community see her as a baby. Well, older fans seem to always see newer fans as babies, but not in the respect I'm talking about.
7. Compliment people on their theories, meta, fanvids, fanatrt, and fanfic. People love to get kind response and will often act super nicely back. It certainty makes your day better.
8. Don't invest too much time in online fandoms. You're live off the Internet is still important.
