Soo....who here has Betta fish? I love these little guys. They're so pretty, and full of personality. Although I feel bad for them, since most people often don't realize they require a 5 gallon tank or more, and wind up keeping them in tiny bowls or vases. So here's so fun facts about them, and what kind of care they really need: -Betta's require a minimum of a 5 gallon tank. -Betta's also require a water heater, as they are tropical fish and need their water to be at least 78 degrees. -Betta's thrive best in a tank with a gentle filter, and real fresh aquatic plants. -Betta's also do best alone (this is common knowledge anyways), and aren't recommended being paired with other fish. -A thermometer is ideal for the tank, as it'll tell you the temperature and if the heater is working properly. -Betta's should ideally be fed once every day, but it also is good to have them fast once a week to give their digestive systems a break. -Having space for air at the top of the tank is also ideal. Believe it or not, fish also need some air. -Light for the tank is good for your betta, but it is a good idea to turn off during the night to give them some rest. -Food specific for Bettas is best. Flakes don't do enough justice. Frozen bloodworms are also a great treat! And...that's all I think. Of course, other advice/input is highly accepted! So what sort of Betta do you have? I have a male Dragonscale Betta, who is named Pyromethius. I just call him Pyro for short. Here's some pictures of his tank, and one of him: The tank when I initially got it The tank now, on my desk The handsome guy himself

Oh, he's very handsome! I love Betta fish. I have had some in the past, and indeed did keep them in a smaller container. Though not in anything too tiny. I had one that lived for nearly five years, and that was incredible, as most people I knew killed their poor fish off within a year of having them. My most recent one held on for about two years. I can't remember what type he was, but he was a beautiful, vibrant red, and really liked the random blue gem that was in the bottom of his tank (the stones were white). If you put your finger against the tank near the gem he would puff up and get all intimidating. It was rather amusing. He was a picky fish, too. He didn't like the Betta "pellets" that people typically give their Bettas, so I had to buy Betta-specific flakes for him. He liked those much better. It was very amusing.

Awww he sounds so cute ;-;
A vibrant red...that sounds like he may have been a Half Moon or Double Tail Betta. Those are the most common--at least from what I see anyways.
My betta is funny too. I usually get him to follow my fingers with his food, so he can eat in the top corner of the tank. The filter blows away his food if I just drop it in lol. He'll follow me, and get super excited. It is so cute xD

He was absolutely adorable. Jumped out of his tank once, though, about three days after I got him. About gave me a heart attack. I got him back in the water, thankfully.
And I decided to look it up, because I knew I would recognize it, and he was a crowntail! I thought it was very neat, because Bettas I had in the past were all veil-tails.
It's my favorite thing when they follow your finger. Bettas have such exceptional personalities, something you don't expect out of a fish of all creatures.

Bleaky, you have a betta!? How did I never know this?! *Squeals.*
But anyways, I currently have no fish, but I'm in the process of getting some. But, I've had two betta fish in the past! One had blueish sliver scales, with red fins. That was Gamma. My second one was Delta, who was a bunch of blues and purples, with a bit of red I think. These bettas were each kept in 10 gallon tanks!
Right now I'm setting up a 36 gallon betta sorority, but I wont get any of those gals for a bit.

When I was little I had a female I named Cindy. Killed her within a week though RIP Cindy. Also, didn't know they require a 5 gallon minimum tank o.o a girl I knew who insisted she was some big animal expert always kept hers in a tiny bowl on her wall. Weird :/ not to mention, she always told me "Yeah they're fine in these tiny itty bitty bowls" Always knew she was a fake XD

I used to have Bettafish and was planning on breeding but my female died and then I just had the male. I loved him so much and had him for like 3 or 4 years before he died.

I have 4 at the moment... All males. Mo, who's one of those pinky-purple dumbo bettas with white big pectoral fins. His tail is, er... A piccasso piece at the end, looks like the Petsmart I got him from let his fins deteriorate into fin rot. He also has a weird-shaped eye-- Not the popeye disease sympthom, but it appears to be a birth defect or an injury from when he was still a fry. Not sure how well he can see out of the eye, since it looks a tad hazy too, almost like he's getting a cataract... Either way, he's the reason I don't buy bettas from my local PS, since he's also pretty small, like he was stunted somehow. One of the original 3-- as in, my original 3 first fish. Prince, my cellophane/blue grizzled (butterfly?) doubletail! He's a sassy little goober, hates it when I clean his tank. He has scarlet-like tinges on his fins that don't grow or make an appearance on the body, and Bettafix doesn't help. There's no hemorrhaging of the eye either, or blood oozing off the weird color patches, so... Maybe he's a calico with some red in him? He just doesn't show any sign of illness or distress, but the fin spots remain. Got him from PetCo, one of the original 3. Gamma, he's really dark, but... he's your standard veiltail, might be quarter king or "dragonscale" (the actual betta fancy dragonscale requires the dragonscales to be white, pet store chain colored DSes are actually classified as metallics). His body is like that dark denim blue, and his fins are like, dark red. Like when you get a blood test and you look in the vail of the sryinge after they draw from you and the blood is a very dark color. The tips of his fins have a little black border to them-- not finrot, but coloration like a salamander or gas betta. Champagne, my... I dunno how to classify his color. When I first got him, he was like a dark champgne color, but under the lighting of my tank he's a kind of red-scarlet. He has a few little bright, almost electric blue stripes at the base of his caudal fin that trail up the rays half a centimeter or so. He also has dark "freckles" on his body, not any external parasites or disease that I can see. He looks like a halfmoon, but he's actually a double tail with feathertail/rosetail genes... He's tail bit before, which is unfortunately a side effect of those genes. Of those 4, Champagne lives in a 2.5 gallon with a single ghost shrimp, and the others live in seperated quarters of an Aqueon Betta Falls. I bought the Falls before I knew they needed a LOT more room, and I can't sell my mom on the idea of getting 3 more 2.5s to put them in. Champagne's in a 2.5 since my mom was hesitant about getting a 5 gal ("Where would we put it? Your desk is already full and it can't support that kind of weight, and the bookshelf I bought for the Betta Falls won't fit it" kinda deal). The Betta Falls is heated, and each seperated living quarter of the thing has either 3 nano marimo or 1 big marimo in it, since the absurd lighting they use is put in the sump, and my gravel is solid, so yeahthatdoesn'tsupportlight-lovingplants. The 2.5 is LED lit and planted with Moneywort, some Java Ferns, and 2 big marimo. Before I had Gamma and Champagne, I had 1 other fish living where Gamma is now. He was Alpha, the tiniest of the original 3. He was a doubletail, from PetSmart, he had the scarlet-orange fins and teal metallic body scales that seem to be a trending color. His fins looked like carnation petals when I got him, with the ragged shape and red color. I'll put his story under a spoiler as it might be disturbing for some, since he died. While I was cleaning his tank and bastering out his waste, he darted up to the tip of the baster and got sucked on it. I managed to get him off of it without sucking out an eye or shaking him around, but it tore off some scales on his forehead. He then caught velvet (my assumption was that it was latent in the water of one of the cups I got the 3 from, and it took an opportunistic strike when Alpha was injured, as bettas can have some measure of resistance to velvet when relatively unstressed), and then Mo and Prince caught it too. As soon as I noticed, I moved Alpha into a separate PetSmart betta cup intending to treat him separately since I didn't yet realize the others were sick as well. The water in the cup was dechlorinated but had a temperature difference that I didn't account for while I was panicking, and Alpha went into shock as soon as he struggled out of the net and died right before my eyes. I pretty much cried for weeks, and it still hurts to think about what could have been. Rest in peace Alpha, I'll see you in the river under the Rainbow Bridge someday.
