Please do not ruin one of my favorite animated films.
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.
At first when I heard that they were creating a Netflix series for the movie, I was surprised and excited. It would introduce new material for the movie/fandom, but now that I've seen a glimpse of it, I don't really have high hopes unfortunately. At least with The Lion Guard, they kept the 2D animation, and the storyline is simple for the episodes I admit, and not as dark as the movie, but at least it doesn't break the fourth wall like a lot of shows aimed for younger audiences do. But I really love TLG a lot, so much that it has become one of my favorite shows. Or maybe I'm biased because the actual movie is my favorite animated movie in the world.
But anyways, here are some of the reasons why I am worried for the direction the show is going to take.
-First, the title is misleading. "Spirit Riding Free". Okay, you want to know what's wrong with that? Take the word free, and put it next to the promotional picture. He's in reigns, with a girl riding on his back. How does that in any way, represent freedom?
Second, I love the traditional 2D animation of the film, and I have a feeling this show is going to be in 3D animation, *cries*.
-Character design. WHY THE HECK DOES SPIRIT HAVE A WHITE BLAZE DOWN HIS HEAD? And the Pinto horse looks a bit derpy.
-It looks like they're going to exclude important characters like Rain and Esperanza, and even the Native Americans, which I thought were a great addition to the first movie. I mean I don't mind if they introduce new horses, but I'll miss the other characters.
-THERE ARE MODERN DAY HUMAN CHARACTERS THAT ARE GIRLS IN THEIR TEEN YEARS. You know what that's going to spell out? Gossip, social/school drama, unnecessary plotlines. This is Spirit. The main purpose behind his story is the freedom and story of the wild west. Not for modern day people. Like I said, if the humans were Native Americans, and the show included them dealing with their problems, I'd probably be okay with that, as long as it didn't take away from the story too much. When I watch stuff, I don't like to watch something that shows people in modern conflicts that can happen every day. I'd like something unique and fresh, hence the reason I enjoy Warriors, Doctor Who, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter etc.
-The premise is a bit cheesy.
-If the horses talk to the people, just to get their screen time, I'll scream. I like how the movie was set up. But at the same time, if the horses don't talk, then the show will focus more on the people characters!
So anyways, I'll still try it out, and I hope it's better than I'm expecting at this point.
