It seems that everywhere there's some sort of mythical, once-thought-extinct, or folktale creature that's said to be roaming in the woods, lakes, rivers, or even the sewage system. And I'm curious what the most common one around you is/ if any.
To be honest, I don't really have anything local where I live in California. Not even in the woods. We hear about Bigfoot but it's treated like a tall tale and no one takes it seriously. I don't really take it seriously.
However, here in Idaho where I'm at college, Bigfoot is much more popular and there's quite a few people who believe it exists. One of my professors has a good friend who's a super strong believer and has aparently been on Monsterquest multiple times.
But other than Bigfoot, nothing else really. Cause my dad grew up in the UK Nessie is pretty popular, and I've watched some documentaries and I think it's possible that it existed at one point. I don't think it's around now though. Or it was a greenland shark- that's one of the more recent theories.
So yeah, what "monsters" are talked about/seen near you? Do you believe they exist?

The Blair Witch. I live in Maryland and it's the most well-known and popular of our folklore.
As for the lesser ones, we have the Demon Truck of Ellicott City, The Goatman, and the Legend of Moll Dyer.

We have a lot of ghosts because we live in an area with a lot of historical landmarks from the revolutionary and civil wars.

my dad is a huge mythical creature fan so he watches documentaries all the time, so my house gets a lot more exposure to monster types than probably my entire town. the main ones that come up in my house are mermaids, chupacabra, BIGFOOT is huge my dad supposedly found a footprint by his mother's house once with his friend Jason, wolfman which my brother and i actually saw that or something similar when i was a child, lochness monster, aliens are talked about a lot but idk if those count..
for local legends, in the school basically every bathroom has some ghost or another. mainly bloody mary and the candy man was pushed in the bathrooms in the elementary school.

In good ol Ohio, I'm pretty sure we don't have anything. I like to believe that the Slenderman lives in the woods that are next to a park that I've been to multiple times... and I'm really wanting to go Bigfoot-hunting. I read the "Finding Bigfoot" book, and it was just really cool.

Well in Idaho we have Bigfoot and the Bear Lake Monster, but no one really talks about those around here. My mom onetime was on a boat in a lake in Washington where there is said to be a lake monster. And my dad has been to lake Okanagan.
omg I used to be so into monsters this thread was calling my name

Here in Sweden we don't have much. Trolls and witches, mainly, but they're more old wives tales that we're told about as children and then grow out of. Like Santa, but evil.

in my university's town specifically, there's this road colloquially known as "demons road"
basically there's a cemetary somewhere along it, and if you go there spooky stuff *apparently* happens. if i could drive and have a car, i'd love to go there tbh.
in my hometown (... city? i'm from houston) there's not really any specific "monster" folklore that's local afaik

La Llorona (the weeping woman), she is a ghost that married a man but the man was seeing another so she drown her children. she weeps while she searches for her children in the river.
and the Chupacabra (goat sucker). it had reported habits of sucking the blood and killing live stalk kinda like a vampire. it is the size of a small bear with a row of spines going from its neck to the end of the tail with 2 fangs. it has many sightings sooo... that's something to look forward to.
EDIT: oh i found more. who knew?
the Mogollon, sorta like big foot but native to where i live. i think its smaller and cuter. it has long black or reddish brown hair and acts obnoxious and sometimes aggressive. its very strong.
the Gila monster
the Jackalope, hopefully you know what this is, but just in case its a jackrabbit with antelope horns.
Skinwalkers, in Navajo legend, a skinwalker is a medicine man or which who has attained the highest level of priesthood in the tribe, but chose to use his or her power for evil by taking the form of an animal to inflict pain and suffering on others. like shapeshifters.
there is a ghost who wanders the grand canyon. she wheres a white robe with flowers in it and a scarf over her head... SPOOKY.
lots and lots of aliens and UFOs around here.
there is probably some more. i wonder if you can figure out where i live based on these? although that ghost lady probably gave it away. i DARE you to figure out where i live.

Bigfoot's a minor one here. The main one in Wisconsin is the Hodag, a vicious creature that is said to roam the forests of northern WI. Here's an illustration: (Apparently this one originated with a prankster who claimed that he had killed one in the late 1800s - claimed he had to kill it with dynamite - and a photo made it into newspapers, and then he later claimed to have captured one alive and showed it at a fair, even moved it slightly when visitors would get close. At that point it made it into the national news and some scientists from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC were gonna come check it out so he finally had to admit it was fake.)

Where I live is considered to be straight up haunted. There are many different urban legends, whether it be satanic cults, witches, mutants, ghost bar fights, ghost cars, ghost mothers, black cats, suicide pacts, and more. There's a reason we like Halloween.
Since I live near lake Eerie we have the less popular cousin of Nessie called Bessie. Shes a lake serpent.

But black cats are not bad, they are adorable and friendly. If I ever get a black cat and someone threatens them, I'll just say that I'm a witch and I'll put a curse on them. (I'm not btw) I told that to these kids who were homeschooled that I was a witch and they freaked out because they're strict Christians lol.

No legendary monsters but my city actually has a lot of weird occult people running around. I don't mean harmless Wiccans or whoever, I mean frickin Satanists who do blood rituals n crap. We've had a few murders around here in the past decade or so that were done by occultists who decided to sacrifice people to... I dunno, the demon of their choice.
