so, for all those unfamiliar with fish, you can go to the local pet store and there is a type of snail known as the mystery snail. they're relatively small. two's great for a ten or more. they're slow-moving, peaceful little buggers. the reason some dub them mystery snails is because you sometimes never know if they are actually mystery snails. it's kind of a surprise if, you know, THEY START GROWING TO THE SIZE OF A SOFTBALL
GODZILLA IS REIGNING TERROR DOWN ON MY SMALL LITTLE TEN GAL. SOMEONE SEND HELP. PETCO DONE DID ALL THE LIES.
anyways, i'm pretty sure arnold's an apple snail.

Make sure it doesn't get into contact with anything too salty.

-.-
it's an aquatic snail. some can live in saltwater but i'm more freshwater myself. i'll be sure to keep it clear, though.

Oh dear.... I'm more of a shrimp person when it comes to my aquarium substrate buddies, but geez... You better be careful he doesn't get out of the tank, Apple Snails can get invasive if they break into the wild.
(also, to clear another aquarium myth like you did for the snails: ghost shrimp, even the actual shrimp and not macro prawn are semi-aggressive. If you got a hotheaded one then they might latch onto a fish and eat off their tail during feeding time, or it will poke its claws out at fish and take the fish food away. They can be real jerks if you're unlucky, especially to fish like bettas.)

Oh gosh, those snails get massive. Aren't they illegal to keep (Or sell?) in some sates? Maybe I'm thinking of something else though.
Welp, all I can really say is good luck!

and that's actually really good advice. i hadn't really heard of that and was debating on getting a few for my later tank. merlin, my crowntail, would NOT be happy.

Welp, all I can really say is good luck! i've never really heard of that. mostly because i never expected to get an apple snail but i'll do a little research and see. thanks for the warning. c: if it is, they probably mixed it in by mistake. as i said, mystery snails aren't called mystery for no reason.

@blackbird Though I haven't tried them, I'm guessing the cardinia and neocardinia varieties of shrimp would be friendlier-- The little red cherry shrimp actually breed readily in regular tank conditions, so if you start with a big enough colony then the fish might not wipe 'em all out... If that fails, though, then I suggest getting a smaller snail. ^^;
Also, if your later tank will be in the 20g range, and you keep peaceful schoolers like neons and harlequins, a bamboo shrimp would be nice! They filterfeed, so they can't hurt no one. If Merlin's tank is on the 5g side, I could suggest a Yamato/Amano shrimp, but I've never had one before. It'd be up to your further research.
Best of luck to you and your aquatic buddies! ^ω^

thanks for the tip! i've seen the small cherry types. they're so small! i've a friend that's got a 40gal she could keep it in. i might give it away then to her and go out for another mystery. i love arnold but that's just too big.
i'm hoping for a 20 so maybe. we've a max limit at the dorm i'm staying in of 15, though. the 10 i do have is great but the plan i've set would work best for a 20. thanks so much for your advice! i'll do a bit of research, yes. c:
to you as well!
