I was wondering that while reading dawn of the clans. I think that the ancients' names actually were abbreviations. When Gray Wing was giving Wind Runner her name he first gave her was like a long modern tribe name. She said that was a mouth full so they chose Wind Runner instead. I think Wind Runner may have unofficially ended the long name culture of the tribe. Also according to the Wiki Gray Wing eventually became Graywing. I think the kit paw culture may have started so that other clans would know children's training level. kit means no ability and paw means some. Think of how much difficulty Gray Wing had telling all of the people he raised ages. I can't be the only one in the audience just as confused as him can I? The first part is not exactly true because he died as "Grey Wing" He was probably only known as Greywing by later cats who by then already adopted the 1 word naming system

I always imagined Wind Runner started the 'kit' suffix, after Emberkit.

Trends.
Maybe a creative queen named her kit Firekit or something and when they were about to be "apprenticed" she asked the leader to change his name to Firesomething, maybe even Firepaw straight up. Then when he was old enough to become full member she wanted to make his name something original. More cats started using this trend and then the leaders realized "wait that is actually good idea"

maybe this naming style is the new tradition mentioned in thunderstar's echo's blurb I hadn't thought about that. Though in the MFV manga, everyone still had the same names from DOTC/MFV, Black Ear, Spider Paw, Blue Whisker, Moth Flight, etc.
Though Moth Flight was Mothflight in Tallstar's Revenge and Gray Wing was Graywing in BOTC. So the Clans seem to remember these two with one digit names. But Shattered Ice was still Shattered Ice in Tallstar's Revenge.
Hmmm.....

Since warriors don't have a written language, I've often wondered how they could differentiation between Moth Flight and Mothflight. My theory is that they verbalize the space in between the words.

❈ -- Besides from Wind Runner, when she made Emberkit have the suffix kit, maybe StarClan had something to do with it. Course, they didn't give any other cat lives or anything like that, but maybe every half-moon, when they went to the moonstone, StarClan told them about something.
idk. Or maybe Mothflight wanted to name a kit with the same suffix as Emberkit in memory of him.
Another theory is that they got this from the warrior code. Like, once they started it, it had stuff like 'A kit cannot become an apprentice until they are six moons old.' That was afterwards, though, so probably when they started it, they decided to change things around... or maybe the Clans just wanted to get more organized with things and then someone randomly came up with that idea.
Anyways, back to the StarClan thing. So, I was thinking that if warriors have to go to the Moonstone after they receive their warrior name, well, they have gotten a new name, and based on that, if they did it from the beginning (apart from what we saw) then don't they need something before they actually get their name?
