Is there anyone else who isn't surprised by all the cats who seem to be forced into becoming a medicine cat? After seeing the blurb for Spottedleaf's Heart, I wasn't surprised by what was said.
I mean a lot of people are upset that there aren't many cats who genuinely want to be a medicine cat from their kithood (Who are main characters). But if you think about it there isn't much appeal to being a medicine cat. There is even less appeal if you are apart of a specific Clan.
The biggest thing is you can't have a family. Some people will say you do have a family because you still have your parents and littermates. That's only if you have littermates at all (plenty of cats have grown up without littermates) and if parents and/or littermates are still alive. We've seen plenty of cats lose their parents before they finish their training and the same can be said about littermates. You can never have your own kits or a mate. You have to forfeit falling in love and starting your own family. Also unless your parents or littermates are Clan leader/deputy you don't spend as much time with them as you did when you were a kit. You can never sleep beside your littermates in the apprentice den or your parents/littermates in the warriors den. Even if you make friends with other warriors you never spend much time with them.
And while the title has honor behind it, it can still come across as not appealing.
ShadowClan has shown some improvement but there as been signs that they don't fully respect the medicine cat position. Yellowfang's Secret was the first portrayal of how ShadowClan see their medicine cats. Which is they didn't see them as all that important simply because they didn't hunt or fight. They were even being called cowards. And did you see how quickly the whole Clan turned on Yellowfang when Brokenstar called her a murderer?
And in the new series they were convinced that a cat only needs a few moons of teaching and then they'll be a proper medicine cat. Which is a stupid thought on top of that they pretty much forced a kit to become a medicine cat. It made me question if they realized that they were forcing a kit to give up one day being a father Or being allowed a mate in general.
Thinking about it. Is it really all that surprising that a lot of cats were forced into the position? Medicine cat's live a lonely existences. They're separated from the rest of the Clan because of their code. They can't have a family of their own. Any friendships made aren't as close as a friendship between two warriors. You might remain close to your littermate, but even then it might not be as close as you were as kits.
The life of the medicine cat is lonely. Sure the Clan becomes your kits but you'll never have that special connection shared between a parent and a child.
Sure you get a special connection with StarClan but StarClan doesn't fill that void either. And StarClan is limited and can only do so much.
Let me be clear though, that doesn't mean the cats who were forced aren't happy or didn't find happiness in their position as a medicine cat. What I believe is they simply were more interested in being a warrior and didn't see the appeal in being a medicine cat. There are other things a cat might not like. Like being surrounded by the scent of herbs. Like having to chew herbs all the time. Having to remember each individual herb along with the other things I've mentioned. It makes sense why StarClan might have to force some cats to choose this path.
Some cats might want the medicine cat life but not fully understand what it means to have that life until something unexpected occurs that throws them off, that makes them rethink their life or at least question the choice of becoming a medicine cat.
Does anyone one else have thoughts on this?
