Particles. Particles are great. They describe what relation a word has with the rest of a sentence. They're the difference between: ハンバーガーを食べた。(Hanbāgā wo tabeta.) "I ate a hamburger.", and ハンバーガーは食べた。 (Hanbāgā wa tabeta.) "The hamburger ate me." Since you don't need words to indicate "I"/"me"/"you"/"her", etc, you could be accidentally saying the second one. Or not. I don't know how your Saturday went.
Anyway, to try to describe it, を (wo) indicates the object of the statement. This means that whatever word comes before this, the verb is done to it. は (wa) is a bit tricky, but to keep it simple, it marks the topic. There's also one that marks the subject, but don't ask me the difference because I have no idea. In simple terms, it tells us that the word before it does the verb. This example cracks me up every time.
