Yeah I know, the title makes it sound kinda stupid. But it'll be great I promise lol.
So here's the general idea:
At some point in the distant-ish past (few hundred years probably), there was some sort of magical cataclysm similar to a nuclear apocalypse but more... magicky, I guess. Humans were forced to retreat to various safe havens in order to survive the magical residue, which would have an effect similar to nuclear fallout, though instead of poisoning people it would just slowly (or quickly) mutate them into monsters. Though a few places were considered safe, every corner of the world was at least touched by magic, and though people were mostly unaffected at first, over the course of generations the species evolved into several different mutated races.
In modern times, the residue has worn off in most places. As long as one doesn't linger too long, people can travel from one city to another without having to worry about about being mutated (though if they travel frequently over many years, they may start to get minor mutations). Some places have even cleared up enough that people have begun to emerge from the safe havens and form new settlements across the wasteland. But even without the immediate threat of magical mutation hovering over one's shoulders, the world is still filled with monsters- creatures and humans horrendously mutated from the cataclysm. Some creatures are more benevolent, peaceful, and sometimes even helpful, while others are aggressive and violent, tearing a human to shreds without a second thought. Some are magical, while others are more mundane. Either way, those who dare venture forth from the safety of the havens' walls must tread softly.
So while I could come up with all of this stuff on my own, having some other peoples' input would be nice too. Basically what I'm looking for is ideas for the havens (I'm thinking there should be 3-5 of them, each with 1 or possibly 2 native races), the races, mutated animals, wasteland places, and wasteland settlements. I haven't decided yet whether this roleplay should revolve around a single settlement or a group of people who possibly travel between settlements, doing things like carrying messages or escorting travelers.
The idea is that this roleplay will have aspects of those genres mentioned in the title. The apocalypse aspect is pretty obvious, as is the fantasy aspect. "Wild west" mostly comes in at the wasteland settlements and the wasteland itself; you can probably imagine how that would work. The steampunk is probably the least obvious, but basically I'm going for some kind of neat magicky technology and maybe some ancient technology that remains in the havens or can be scrounged up from the wasteland. So like, magic-powered guns and robots or whatever.
Anyways, would anyone be into an idea like that?
