i'm looking for a city in which car ownership is common, but public transportation is decent enough to live off of too.
i'm from houston and everyone drives because our public transportation is as shoddy as a top-ten city's public transportation can get (also, many people commute from the suburbs).
anyway this is for a compare/contrast essay.

im in charlotte and i rely solely on public transportation (no licence). honestly either is fine here but having a car is much easier i imagine, just because figuring out which bus to take can be difficult haha

Your own car. You can do want you want. Either way, you're paying for something. Gas or bus fare. but also insurance and any maintenance fees.

well I'm a college student in VT and I don't drive/own a car so I either take the bus or walk if it's close enough. I'm not in a huge city but really close to downtown. There's a fairly big pedestrian mall with several stores/restaurants, etc, so it's pretty easy. And for places slightly farther there's good bus service.
At home (upstate NY) the bus service isn't that great - there's like a period of 3 or 4 hours in the middle of the day when buses won't go out to my house.

I'm in a small WI city (really could be called a town, but by official definitions it's a city.) Most people drive, but if you live in town everything's close enough to walk/bike, and there's a taxi service if you really need it. There's no bus service.
In a somewhat larger city maybe a half hour or so away, there's a bus service but no taxi.

Both are fine here. I rarely take public transit because I'm usually at school, but my one friend takes it to work everyday she works and she's fine.

san diego is like that, ppl take buses if its more convenient(closer areas) and some buses do go on the freeways and are not bad environments, but still cars are probably more common here

I don't live in a city. I live in a crowded small down.
