Ivypool and Dovewing served no purpose to the plot whatsoever. I think Hollysnow made a topic called "Ivyfool" a while ago, and she was a cliche, jealous character who didn't like her sister's popularity.
This is my own opinion, but for Dovewing, she's just a character who really had her life all concentrated about love. While Dovewing and Ivypool both developed amazingly, they were still useless to the plot. Ivypool spied, sure, but she never reported anything. She was scared of Jayfeather and Lionblaze doing something to the Dark Forest trainees and she didn't want them to know who the "traitors" were.
Dovewing was mostly focused on Tigerheart, and because of him I honestly think he's the reason why it took so slow for her to grow up. I don't mind Dovewing, but I know that she's a poorly written character, bland, and your cliche popular girl who's getting all of the attention and leaving your friend or sister in the shadows.
I can say that Dovewing served her purpose by proving that the Dark Forest warriors exists to the leaders, but most of the time it's kind of a shame how her character wasn't really focused on the plot. She didn't want to spy; she didn't want to leave Tigerheart, and so on.
Honestly these two characters are so poorly written that I just don't care for either of them now. I only defend Dovewing (and perhaps I am even a little overprotective) because people bash on her so much because they give her sister credit who's done absolutely nothing at all.
Omen of the Stars was just terrible in general. I liked the stories after Omen of the Stars. Dovewing and Ivypool both developed and they became more likable for the readers and myself. I like Dovewing, but she's so poorly written though, and I like Ivypool's development more, because I can relate to it and it's well-developed, but it's so overused that it was boring and predictable.
Nothing new or surprising came out of these characters. I've watched so many shows about a girl being popular and leaving your friend or sibling out of the shadows. This isn't really anything new, and these characters are poorly written, both Dovewing and Ivypool.

because they needed a stand-in Third and some filler drama
...which is to say they should have ended the plot of POT in POT and not continued it for a whole six more books which were mostly boring irritating filler drama

Ivypool is shown to maturing a bit more, and hopefully she can redeem herself by doing something spectacular.
Dovewing better stay clear of the Tigerheart Bumblestripe drama or I am not waiting for her to realize her stupidity and end her own life.

I never understood how the Erins just couldn't find a power that fit Hollyleaf so they decided she wasn't one of the three at like, Long Shadows or whatever.
Like, I would think you'd at least know the powers of all the Three before you started writing PoT? Because literally the whole entire PoT and OOTS arcs could've been streamlined if you just thought of a power for Hollyleaf beforehand. It wouldn't have been that hard. She could've been able to detect when another cat was lying. She could've been able to have Dovewing's power. She could've been able to have precognitive visions. She could've been able to convince cats to do certain things. She could've been able to manipulate outcomes of situations with her mind.
Seriously; so many powers could have fit her and you could've had an arc that focused on Hollyleaf, post-reveal, struggling to use those powers for the right reasons.
But instead we got Ivypool and Dovewing and needless drama and insane filler.
If we didn't have Dovewing, we would've been able to at least cut half of OOTS' filler out since it dealt with developing Dove and Ivy as characters, making them become warriors, etc. We could've instead focused extensively on the prophecy, the characters coming to terms with their parentage, their powers, a redemption arc for Hollyleaf.
Literally anything else that would've worked.
But nope. We got the Warriors equivalent of Middle School drama.

The thing is...Dovewing was the third cat in the prohecy. But yet Ivypool has an even more active role than her, and the other three, in the plot. Which imo is kinda funny, since she was actually involved with the Dark Forest, and the reason for turning the tide of war.

I sometimes think the Erins just have a bunch of plot points and characters on scraps of people, throw them in a hat, and whatever they pick they use.
