They could, I mean in the warrior series they know the difference between Juniper berries and deathberries, and marigold and poppy seeds. I'm sure even in rl cats know the difference between certain plants and maybe even certain rocks with their experience through them. They just wouldn't call them what we call them cause well...they're cats. For story's sake they know the difference.

Call me Des, or your majesty. Either suffice.

I find this very instresting because a lot of people assume that anything found in nature must be known the the clans but thats honestly not true. A common name I use is 'Celandinepaw' which is a kind of flower actually mentioned in the books and is a reference to her character traits. (A lot of research went into this) When I first used it someone was using a name (I can't quiet recall) that didn't suit the their character or had any connection to the clan or territory and it bothered me a lot. I feel like if the clan has the object/species in the territory or mentioned somewhere in the books it's safer to use, though if it's not found in the clan the cat is in then it shouldn't be their name. Some people don't acknowledge this and I understand your thoughts. (Just an opinion btw I understand in different thoughts)

I'm not sure if cats know what those things are, but it doesn't really bother me. It's easier to use human names for things, instead of trying to create cat words for every animal and plant.
But with that said I never got gem names. You have to mine for gems and the cats don't mine, so how would they ever know what a sapphire or a ruby is. If they were a former kittypef or something that's different. But I can't see a wild cat knowing what those things are.

I imagine it would depend where they live. If apples and/or cherries grew there, they'd probably know what they were.
