Like so that way they aren't spontaneous and blow up the OTD section. I don't think that debates need to be completely eliminated, as not all debates have to deal with controvertial topics. I think that a more maintainable approach needs to be implimented. Here is what I propose: - Have a separate board strictly for debates on various topics.
- If a member wishes to have a debate, have them send in a request for a debate to administration. They should clearly detail what they wish to have a debate about.
- Once the request is sent in, the user works with administration in order to make sure that there is a set date where the user and at least one mod/other neutral third party to supervise and enforce forum rules regarding respect if necessary.
- Once a date has been agreed upon the week before the debate takes place, put up a promo on the debate board letting everyone know what date, time, and what will be debated. This is where people will post expressing their interest to particpate.
- The thread where the debate is to take place MUST include a copy of/link to forum policy regarding bully/harassment/respect on that page as a reminder for everyone to be good sports and respectful to each other.
- During the debate, the supervisor must not take any one side. They should intervene in conflict in a professional manner. If said supervisor is not a mod, they are to post a warning first, if disruptive behavior continues/the thread gets out of hand they are to report the thread.
I understand that this could be confusing/time consuming, but I hate seeing the conflict that keeps setting OTD ablaze.

I like the idea of a debate board, but I feel like it would be better to have a "debate search" board. Like "my views on ___ are ___, post if you have opposing views and want to discuss it over PMs." that way no one person or group of people are being constantly assaulted with people disagreeing, and there doesn't have to be set dates or mods/admins making time for discussions that could easily become petty.

It's fine! It was a really good suggestion, just not viable in the long-run. what about the debate search thing? i realize that it wouldn't really fix spur of the moment "debates", but it might cut down on it a bit? or at the very least stop secondary threads on the topic from popping up after the original problem thread is locked, since people that are still in the debating mood can go there instead. that would really help with emotional morale, so users don't feel mad at mods/admins for locking the threads bc there's another outlet option instead of completely getting cut off.
