Prologue
It was a dark and stormy leaf bare night, snow piled around the trees as a blizzard pelted snow down from the heavens, trying to claim a sleek black she-cat with amber eyes that entered the Light Clan camp with its cold grip. The camp was well defended, with its bramble walls for its front and sides and a steep stone ledge that is too high to climb up or down at its back. But this she-cat was no foe. After passing the Queen’s Nest and the Iron Guard’s cave, the black cat climbed up to a large hole in the stone wall where the clan leader made his nest. “Steelstar! Wake up!” the black cat whispered, trying not to awaken the camp.
“What is it Ivytail?” Steelstar said half asleep
“The oracle! She wants to see you!” Ivytail replied. The oracle at this time is Farsight from Light Clan, but even because of that she doesn’t see anyone for without a good reason.
“What? Why didn’t you say so!” he exclaimed, suddenly full of energy “Tell Nightstorm to come to me. I need to address the clan.” Ivytail bolted towards the Deputy’s nest on the side of the dent in the wall. She busted into the nest where a snoring black shape was sleeping.
“Nightstorm! Wake up!” Ivytail said whilst prodding him with a claw. He awakens instantly. His sharpened senses coming alive. He unsheathes his claws instinctively, thanks to dozens of hours of battle experience. He calms himself as he notices Ivytail.
“What is it?” He grumbled,
“Steelstar is addressing the clan. He told me to get you.” She hastily replied, Nightstorm lazily got up and padded over to the High-Oak.
“Nice of you to get up, ” Steelstar said after seeing Nightstorm emerging from his nest, “I didn’t think you would listen to her.”
Nightstorm sighed and didn’t say reply, but sat down next to him on the once mighty oak. “Well, I guess I’ll start…” Steelstar said staring out towards the horizon.
“All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather under the High-Oak for a clan meeting!” Steelstar yowled from atop the High-Oak, after the cats awakening to the summons they sat somewhat orderly under the High-Oak. “The oracle has had a vision! We must be at high alert whilst Nightstorm and I investigate!” Stunned silence followed, it has been many moons since the oracle had a vision. “Goldensong and Ratdust, you’re on guard duty at the gate with your apprentices. Darknight, Quickbreeze and Bluesky patrol the territory, we must be ready for anything!” The grey tabby tom leapt off the stump and called to Nightstorm. They bravely headed off into the gloomy forest.
After travelling to the Oracle’s Den, Steelstar and Nightstorm entered the small cave, it had a high ceiling of stone and a small pool at the bottom. At the pool, a small grey she-cat sat with her back turned, “Ah, Steelstar. I’m glad you’ve come.” She said whilst continuing to stare into the pool.
“It is good to see you once more Farsight,” Steelstar replied. He walked down to the pool, FarSight’s blind eyes blinked.
“Who is the other you brought with you? I don’t think I’ve met him…” her sightless eyes seemed to be judging Nightstorm’s every move. He stared back, his training as an Iron Guard returning in his habits.
“Oh him? He’s Nightstorm, my deputy.”
“Ah… Now back to why I called you here, I’ve had a vision.” She said turning back to the pool, “Alliances will change, the old will become new and black fire will consume Raven’s Song.”
Chapter one
[][][][ ???? ][][][]
It was new leaf, after fighting off a cold leaf-bare Raven’s Song is finally starting to warm up. Dusktalon was sitting out the front of the Dark Clan camp. He knew what would happen if he was found out, but he had to do it anyway. Looking into the camp, Ligorkit was playing near the entrance to the camp, being orphaned was bad enough, but being half-clan? He would die if anyone found out. Dusktalon dashed into the camp, the guards at the entrance start chasing after him but he was too fast. He grabbed LigorKit and jumped onto the roof of the Queen’s nest, the brambles ripped at his pads as he jumped over the wall. Dark Clan would never find him. He was long gone.
[][][][ Steelstar ][][][]
Steelstar was walking down from his nest, he woke up just a short time ago to the sound of his clanmates talking in hushed whispers outside of his nest. “What is it?” he asked one of the toms who was trying to get his attention.
“There’s a blood trail leading out of Dark Clan territory,” he replied, “But whatever made it didn’t smell right, like a mixture of Dark Clan and rogue.”
“Well whatever it is, it can’t be good. Wolflegs, lead a patrol to find whoever it is.” Steelstar said, a distant look on his face.
“Alright, we’ll find it.” The tom said, determination showing on his face.
“Also, try not to harm it.”
“What? I’m offended that you would even suggest that I would do anything of the sort.” Wolflegs said in mock offence, “anyway, Bluesky, Ratdust, Goldensong and Copperpaw, come here we have a job to do.” Bluesky looks to the sky with a distant look on his face, after a brief contemplation, he grunts his approval. And with that, the patrol sets off for the border.
[][][][ Bluesky ][][][]
After travelling to where the blood trail is, the cat, was running from something, that much being apparent from the amount of fear scent in the area and the lack of stealth.
“Well whomever, it was, he was in a hurry…” Wolflegs said standing over a small puddle of blood
“probably from Dark clan. They smell horrible!” Bluesky murmured with a hint of amusement in his voice.
“I don’t think that is too far from the truth, judging from where it starts it definitely came from that area.” Said GoldenSong
“Hey! Look over here!” exclaimed Copperpaw, standing over near the tree line “It keeps going to the river!”
“Let’s check it out,” Wolflegs said bolting toward the river. After following the trail, it came to an end at a large hole, with seemingly no bottom.
“Well, the only way to find out where it went is to go down the hole…” said Goldensong with a worried look on her face, “I’ll go down, but first where is Copperpaw?”
“I’ll wait for him, you and Wolflegs go on ahead.” Said Bluesky, actually serious for once.
“Alright, see you on the other side!” Said Wolflegs, jumping down the hole with Goldensong close behind.
‘Well, now we wait…’ thought Bluesky, staring off into the distance.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After waiting for a short while, Copperpaw finally decided to show up. “Hey, Bluesky! Where’s Goldensong?”
“Probably fell in the hole.” Replied Bluesky coolly
“Whoa! What’s that?” Exclaimed Copperpaw just noticing the hole
“It’s a hole.”
“I can see that, but what is it doing there?”
“Well, I woke up this morning…. then there was a hole.”
“What are you going to do about it?”
“Well, I put some grass on it… it fell in the hole.”
“Should we do something about it?”
“Oh yeah, I got Wolflegs…”
“where is he?”
“He fell in the hole.”
“Will you two stop screwing around and get down here!” A loud voice emanated from the hole.
“Alright, alright! We’re coming!” Meowed Bluesky jumping down the hole, leaving a very confused Copperpaw standing at the edge of the hole.
[][][][ Steelstar ][][][]
Steelstar was sat just outside of the camp, near the stream. It was one of his favourite places due to the calming effect of the river, most cats dream of becoming the clan leader, but most of the time they don’t think of the difficulty of leading, it’s stressful, to say the least. All of a sudden, a large amount of unease was felt by the cats of the clans, and words found their way to Steelstar’s mouth, “she’s here.” He didn’t know what he meant but, he knew it to be true, the next moon is not going to be easy for the clans.
Chapter two
[][][][ Dusktalon ][][][]
After running for a fair distance Dusktalon and his small companion finally surfaced to a large area with stone walls on all but one side. They barely got out of the hole when a large brown and white tabby tom, with red markings on his shoulder that resembles a paw with two scratches below it, surrounded by two faint dots and two bright dots. The newcomer stared at Dusktalon with his piercing blue eyes, “how was your mission?”
“It was a success. The clans shouldn’t even notice. Also, I picked up a little one.” Dusktalon replied, with a hint of pride in his voice.
“Any particular reason for this development?”
“Yes Runestar, he was in Dark Clan. unfortunately, he is also half-clan and orphaned, he wouldn’t have survived if I didn’t do anything.”
“Alright, I’ll tell the clan, ” Runestar said, “I pity him, hopefully, time will heal his wounds. Now that brings me to my previous question. Will you finally accept yourself into my clan?”
“No. I’m only here for the time being.” Dusktalon responded coolly, walking off to the medicine cat’s area “I’ve still got a promise to keep.”
[][][][ Bluesky ][][][]
The tunnel was covered in claw marks, obviously made by a team of cats. It even had areas for the cats to rest and eat. After walking for what seemed like moons, the patrol neared the light at the end of the tunnel. “Come on! We’re almost there!” Copperpaw exclaimed, rushing in front of the group.
“Wait Copperpaw! It could be dangerous!” Shouted Goldensong, but Copperpaw was too far ahead and paid no heed. Once Copperpaw made it out of the tunnel he froze.
“What is it Copperpaw?” Wolflegs inquired
“f-f-f-fox!” Copperpaw yelped fearfully, and sure enough when the rest of the patrol neared the exit, sitting in the middle of a valley with sheer cliff faces on all but one side and a large forest to the east and a smaller one to the south, was a large fox with a purple collar and a small nick out of its left ear.
“Get out of there!” Yelled Goldensong whilst Bluesky dashed to flank the beast with claws blazing, but before they could fight off the fox, a she-cat with a brown and greenish pelt ran out of the forest to the east. The fox turned to the newcomer and said something in its twisted language,
“Intruders? Go get Runestar!” She yelled as she approached the patrol. Now that she was closer they could make out a black paw with claws extended, surrounded by two bright dots and two faded ones with two scratches below them with the entire mark inside a ring. “What are you four doing here? This is clan territory!” With the fox no longer a threat Copperpaw finally started to talk straight.
“We’re investigating trespassing in our territory!” Retorted Copperpaw, but he was quickly shushed by Wolflegs
“trespassing hey?” the she-cat replied smoothly “so you decided to come through a hole in the ground, to a new land and you don’t even question that?”
“That’s beside the point. Before we continue I may as well introduce myself, I’m Wolflegs. I’m an iron guard of Light clan, and my patrol consists of Goldensong,” Wolflegs said pointing to Goldensong, “Copperpaw and Bluesky.” He finished pointing to Copperpaw and Bluesky respectively.
“So Wolflegs, I’m Forestfur, deputy of Rune clan and mate of Runestar. I’m going to have to ask you to stay here until Runestar arrives.” Forestfur meowed coolly
“That fine.” Bluesky quickly interrupted, “is that him now?” gesturing to two toms running toward them. Forestfur nodded before moving to the side as the two toms came into view, one was brown with black markings across his body and the same mark on his shoulder as Forestfur but red instead of black. The other was pure white with his left ear grey, on his shoulder was a black paw with claws extended and a scratch below it.
“I’m Runestar leader of Rune clan, I demand to know why you are here.” Said the brown tom.
“I’m Wolflegs and these are my clan mates, Copperpaw, Bluesky and Goldensong.” He said introducing them all for the second time. “We’re here because someone went through our territory and continued to here. We have reason to believe that, that someone stole something from the clan next to us.”
“Are you accusing us of stealing!?” The pure white tom shouted, losing his temper,
“Quite Snowstorm.” Runestar hissed. Turning back to the Light clan cats he said “valid concerns, but I’m afraid it wasn’t us. Now head back to your clan, you’ve arrived at a horrible time.”
“We’ll be back.” Said Bluesky as the patrol went back to the hole, “let’s just hope what your saying is true.”
