Sol watched him, watched the memories play out behind his eyes. Happy, yet tinged with heartbreak. It was an all too familiar look. To distract him, to pull him back to the present, he said, "Three is my favorite number."
☆~☆~☆ The man stumbled back, one hand rising to grip his throat, wide eyes still staring at Anya. Seth ignored him entirely. He stepped into the space he had vacated, putting himself between him and Anya, his back to the man. He didn’t let go of Anya's hand. "Thank you. Are you all right?"

Sol shrugged. "Not really. It has simply proved lucky over the years." He shifted in the water, so there was a rock beneath his feet reducing the amount if work required to keep them afloat.
☆~☆~☆ Seth didn't let her remaining anger get to him. He knew it wasn't really directed at him anyway. "I'm fine. He throws like a girl." Which wasn't a lie. The rock had, obviously, hurt, but compared to blows he gad been dealt in the past it hardly made a dent. "Thank you. For defending me," he added in an attempt to distract her from the idiots behind him. He could not remember the last time someone, aside from Stel or Morgan, had defended him. Most knew, or just assumed, that he could defend himself.

Feeling Sol find a foot hold, Parker thought about finally letting him go. Truthfully, he should have let him go a long time ago, but there was something that kept his arms locked in place. It was probably the same something that was trying to lure him into laying his head against his chest or to capture the captain's lips. Now wasn't the time for that, though. They had more important things to do. His grip did loosen a bit, giving Sol the chance to escape if he wanted to. "I would have thought your favorite number would be two."
~*~*~
It took Anya a couple of deep breathes before the anger finally dissipated enough for her to realize what she was doing. Her fingers tightened around his, hoping he wouldn't notice the small tremble of them. Had she really been ready to burn the guy? Over a matter that, as Seth had pointed out, wasn't worth the fight? She hated the idea of people thinking poorly of Seth, especially people who didn't even know him. But to use her magic against someone who couldn't have defended himself against it? "I couldn't just let them hurt you," she muttered.

"Because you seemed to like things in pairs," Parker replied. "You've got two dogs, two hawks. You wear two guns, most of the time anyway, just to name a few."
~*~*~
Anya shook her head. She had noticed that her brother's hadn't spoken up, but she could guess why they hadn't. Either they figured the officials of the contest would have stepped in, or that Seth would fight the battle for himself. After all, he was a Rider. He could handle himself. But that didn't matter to her. "I can't stand people treating you like that," she told him. "I'd be a terrible friend if I just let it happen."

(I've been good. I haven't been able to come to the forums these past few years. My life was so full, I couldn't fit anything else in. Did COVID affect you at all?)

(Although it was only because of old age, they've already had a stroke each. It was a little scary. I haven't actually lost someone I know yet, so even though I'm in my 20's, I still don't know what to feel in such a situation if they do end up passing away so suddenly.)

Sol chuckled and moved closer. "Well?" he prompted, amusement lacing his tone.
☆~☆~☆ Seth looked toward the officials. She was right, and yet... it did not bother him. It wasn't just because he was used to it. He simply didn't care, not really, not anymore, what those men thought of him. It was a rather invigorating thought.
"Then allow me to finish it," he said with a grin. He turned, and from right there — at least ten meters behind the firing line — he set an arrow to the string, pulled back, and fired.
His arrow hit its mark, as did the ones that followed. Arrow after arrow, until there was a five point star in the target. That was more arrows than he was allotted for the competition but... he didn't care. They could count only only the number of arrows allowed, or they could disqualify him entirely.
He shot Anya a smile. "Not the most detailed picture, but the best I could do with the limited space."

(I can totally understand. It's scary to think about, and even more so right now with all this other stuff going on. It's never a fun thought in any situation, but I do hope that they'll both be okay.)
Parker's face turned a shade of red s he finally had to drop his gaze. Could he even call them a couple? Their relationship had yet to really be defined, and he didn't want to just assume anything. Yeah, Sol gave him the power of choice on the matter, but he was still just as confused as he had been at the start. On top of that, could he even say that they worked well as a pair? He thought things were going good for whatever it was, but he was also terribly inexperienced. Sol had no doubt won his attention and affection, but that didn't mean the captain felt the same.
"What are we?" Parker asked. He wanted to know for sure. Whatever the answer, he knew he had already let himself fall deeper into the whole situation than he should have, considering he had known he wouldn't be staying. Still, he had to know how Sol saw them, how he saw him.

Anya turned her head to watch as arrow after arrow hit the target. He didn't stop after five, but continued until a picture had been made. He was right, it wasn't the most detailed, but how many people could have done the same thing? It was enough to bring a small smile to her face. "It looks perfect," she told him.

(You're welcome!)
Parker thought about it for a moment. "Your thoughts," he replied. They could label it whatever they wanted after he knew Sol's mind in the matter. After all, he didn't want to just jump to a random conclusion and be wrong.
~•~•~
Anya nodded and turned her attention towards the officials. Both men she knew. One was Olsen Galf, the butcher, and the other was Bennet Crawford, the town's law enforcement. They always were in charge of the contest every year. Both were large, but Olsen had been steadily getting rounder in the gut as the years passed.
"Young man, you do some mighty fine shooting," Bennet told him when the pair reached them.

The coloring of his face only deepened at the look in Sol's eyes as he gave his thoughts on the matter. That comment could have worked either way. Parker felt that had he been standing, his knees would have surely folded. "But I'm sure there's a whole horde people who look at you the same way and be more permanent than me," he muttered. Why him? Why would Sol, a man who clearly had his life where he wanted it and everything going right, want to settle with the company of some lubber who be leaving in a few weeks?
~•~•~
"And it shows," Bennet replied giving a nod in the direction of his latest show of marksmanship. "The actions of those two men do not reflect our thoughts. This competition is open to all regardless of skill level. To have denied you the right to enter would have gone against that standard."
"However," Olsen piped up, "the fact remains that you did end up firing an arrow in the direction of the crowd. Even if it didn't hit anyone, that's a sure way of disqualification."

He wasn't looking for permanent. Parker had expected that and completely knew that this wouldn't be a permanent thing. Still, there was a small sting at the words. He nodded, accepting his explanation without anymore questions. He was a pass time, a way to fill in the moments when he had nothing else to do. But couldn't the same be true the other way around? Was he not using Sol that way to? It was the logical thing in this situation, one that he shouldn't feel guilty about, but there was suddenly a rock in his stomach, heavy and cold and he wasn't sure why it was there. "So friends with benefits in a sense?" He asked. "Just a little light on the benefits."
~•~•~
"If there was a way around it, we wouldn't," Bennet told him. "You didn't start the fight, and you were handling things fine. If it hadn't been for the rock, things might be different."
Anya flinched from behind Seth. If she hadn't let her magic take over, Seth would still be in the competition. He would have been able to win. She had ruined it for him.
"I'm sorry, but you will be disqualified, however know that we are both impressed with your skills and know that you would have clearly been the winner had this not happened."

Sol had no objections for that. His hand came up to the back of Parker's head, holding him there as Sol angled his head and took the kiss deeper. He wasn't forceful, didn't take more than Parker was willing to give. Instead, using nothing but his lips, he coaxed him closer, drawing him in kazy increments out of his comfort zone.
( Yep. That did it. xD )
☆~☆~☆ Seth returned the smile and nodded. "Thank you, gentlemen. It's been a pleasure." With another nod, thus one of farewell, he turned to Anya and offered her a hand. "Come collect my arrows with me?" he asked. There were helpers for that, but Seth knew Anya could use a moment away from the crowds.
( So we can use him as the farmer/townsman who tries to sell the Dorrehs a crazy colt. xD )
