"As much as I would love to take you up on that offer, by the time you arrange for that, I'll most likely be back home," Parker said. I'm sure bo one would object to me having a dog, and we have the space for it. But I'm still not going to ask you to go through that trouble."

(Got it. And don't mind the tiny liberties I might add. They won't be anything major.)
"He was tall, about like Papa," Anya started, her father being 6 foot even, "brownish eyes, light skin tone. Reddish hair, brown eyes. He was always clean shaven, and I never seen him wear anything but the cleanest and neatest clothes he owned. Kind of sounded like he might have come from the town's near the Surda border."

Sol shrugged. "It's no trouble, but I won't push. At this point there's no guarantee anyway." When they reached the gang plank of his ship, he glanced behind him to see the dog in question was still a wats back, playing with the crab. He whistled. Apollo bounced away from the crab once more and came running, tongue lolling in a big doggy grin. He came to a sliding stop and crashed into Sol, almost knocking him over, which made Artemis snap at her brother in reprimand. Apollo licked Sol's hand, then Artemis's muzzle, in apology, then snuggled up to Parker to hide from his sister's ill-tempered growl.
~ • ~ • ~ ( Prefect. Extra points for mentioning an accent. Fun fact: Nick was born with an accent. He learned to speak without it, but I can totally see him using it as a disguise, or another accent. 😁 )
There was a moment of silence, and then Seth swore. He sat up slightly and reached into a pocket. He pulled out a stack of sketchbooks, which he shuffled through to find the one he wanted. He opened it and flipped through the pages. When he found the right page, he took a deep breath and turned the book toward Anya. "He didn't happen to look like this, did he?"
On the page was a full color sketch of Nick and Ignatius. It was done without Nick's knowledge, during a particularly boring lesson that Seth didn't even remember. Nick was done in profile, not head-on, but Seth had still managed to capture his likeness perfectly. It was Ignatius that had the most detail, though. Seth had always had more interest in drawing dragons than people, so while Nick was front and center, the life-like image of his sleeping dragon was much more eye catching. It actually looked like the burnt orange scales were shimmering in the light of the image.

Highly amused, Parker loved on the chastised dog. "Though I really wouldn't mind having a dog like Apollo. His personality is just too funny."
~•~•~
(Lol, I'll gladly take those bonus points. XD)
Confused, Anya slid her legs off of his lap while he sat up and rummaged around in his pocket dimension. Did he know who she was talking about? He must have since he was pulling out one of his sketchbooks. When he had flipped to the page he was looking for, she leaned forward to inspect the drawing. The dragon was the first thing her eyes moved to. She had never seen a dragon of that coloration before, and she made a note to ask who it might be. But first, she inspected the man also in the portrate. He was younger than she remembered, but there was no mistaken the likeness.
"Yes, that's him!" Anya exclaimed, smiling. "I've never seen the dragon, but that's Master Jan alright. Same stern expression and everything. I thought you said you didn't know him?"

Seth's reaction was concerning. She wasn't sure when the last time she had seen him so shaken, if she'd seen him that way at all. "Seth, are you-" but she didn't get to finish the question before he spoke. Shocked silence followed as her brain processed those words. "A-are you sure?" She asked. "I mean, I don't doubt that you drew Nick, but are you sure he was Jan? Maybe he had a brother? He never mentioned having one, but there were a lot of things he never mentioned."

"I sure do," Sol said with a smile for the big white goofball. Apollo was always good for a laugh, but he was also great at giving affection when it was needed, or giving space when it wasn't. He was extremely smart, though sometimes his playful persona hid it. And he had never hesitated to put himself between Sol and a threat. Artemis may have been the dog glued to his side, but Apollo was just as in tune with him and could always provide exactly what Sol needed from him, even when Sol himself didn't know.
~ • ~ • ~ ( Yeah you are. 😜 )
Seth let out a laugh lacking all humor. "Yeah, that's Nick all right. There was always twice as much he didn't say. He doesn't have any family, as far as I know." At least, he didn't when he was Seth's teacher. He tapped the image of Nick. "He left the Order almost four years ago and vanished. Dropped completely off the grid. Genevieve has a lot of reach, and dozens of skilled trackers and search spells. None of them were ever able to find him. Right around the time he disappeared, a dragon egg was stolen from the hatchery at the House." He met Anya's gaze. "A black dragon egg. Coincidence? I think not."

Parker smiled as he gazed at Sol. Gods he was cute when he did that. "But the real question is: is he a good bed bug?" He asked. "Because you can't tell me he hasn't slept in the bed, and been a giant teddy bear."

😁😂)
Okay, so that was a little harder to deny that it wasn't a coincidence. Anya tried to think of anything that might prove they were different, but what she actually found made her own puzzle pieces click into place. "You were who he mentioned," she murmured, eyes widening a little. "Every now and then, he would mention a kid or two he knew. I think only onceor twice he did it, but he did say he had tutored others. He never mentioned if they were Riders. All he would say was how he had to get their attention to learn. I didn't ask about them because he said he didn't like thinking about it, but it had to be you then if he was Nick."

Sol shrugged. They were halfway between the stairs down to the crew quarters and the door to his rooms. Since Parker hadn't given him a straight answer on where he wanted to sleep tonight, he stopped there as he answered. "She actually doesn't seem to mind you. I know it may not look it, but she is very opinionated and doesn't usually like the company I keep. Mostly because they take attention off her. Huh. You know, I think I might be in a relationship with my dog." He gave a boyish grin. "Awkward."
~ • ~ • ~ Seth breathed out a humorless laugh and ran his hands through his hair. "I don't... even know how to respond to that." He had always felt a sort of bond with Nick, but he had believed it was only one way. After all, Nick was guardian and teacher to more kids than just Seth. Speaking of... "How do you know it was me he was talking about and not one of the other kids from the Program?"
~ • ~ • ~ Morgan took his time getting back to camp, not because he didn't want the confrontation with Lawrence that was inevitable (although he really wasn't looking forward to that), but because he wanted to make sure Kyra got back all right. He didn't shadow her the whole way, of course. After their non-argument, he hung out with Kyon by the treeline for a while and had a serious heart-to-heart with his dragon that helped him put things into perspective. By then Kyra had gotten a pretty good headstart, though it still didn't take them long to catch up, even with Kyon flying slowly. They hovered with her for a few miles, then continued on ahead, still flying slow.
When they finally returned to Kyon's designated little clearing just outside camp, Morgan was unsurprised to see Shara already settled in hers a ways off. Morgan sighed as he slid to the ground. "Time to face the firing squad."
Kyon's eyes sparkled with amusement. That's not really anything new.
No, it wasn't, though in the past it had always been Nick giving him what-for. Oh well. He gave Kyon a pat and set out for Lawrence's tent.

Sol chuckled. "She would just be constantly putting herself between us. And maybe, if she really didn't like you, she would give you a nip or two to let you know." There had only been one person he had seen her get that way with, and it had later turned out it was because the woman was trying to make off with all the valuables she could fit in her skirts.
~ • ~ • ~ Seth let out a startled laugh. That couldn't have been anyone but him. None of the other kids had ever been considered small for their age. The rest sounded like him too, though it could also apply to Morgan. Seth had always gotten the impression that Morgan wasn't really trying as hard as he could be. Of course Nick would have noticed that too. Nick noticed everything, and he always knew how to fix it.
His laugh broke off as abruptly as it started and he covered his face with his hands for a minute. He felt a rising flood of emotions in him and it was making it hard to breathe.
He suddenly surged to his feet, sending sketchbooks tumbling to the floor, and started for the door. "I have to go." He didn't look at her as he said it, and he didn't give her a chance to stop him. Within seconds he was out the door, off the porch, and running.
Aidan came hurrying out of the kitchen when he heard the door open and close. He turned wide eyes on Anya. "What's wrong? Where is Seth going? Is he okay?"

"Still, that nip or two could turn deadly. More reasons why I'm glad she tolerates me," Parker said. It was just a shame the black dog wouldn't let him spoil her like Apollo did.
The man looked between the door of Sol's bedroom door and the stairs that would lead to the crew's quarters. "I guess I need to go put up the clothes we got," he mused. He would have to find a spot to store them without having them in the way. There was space enough for it, but it'd just take a bit of organizing.
~•~•~
Anya was just about to reach out and touch his shoulder when Seth abruptly rose to his feet. There was little time to say anything before he was gone. Guilt rose in her chest. Why had she said anything? She could have at least waited before mentioning Nick had talked about him. It was an idiot move on her part. Her eyes meet Aidan's with a small sigh. "I don't know," she answered. "It's a complicated matter. I'll explain it later. Right now, I think he just needs time to think." Though part of her wanted nothing more than to follow him and offer him some kind of emotional support. "Stell will be with him," hopefully, "so he'll be fine."

Apollo was actually the one you had to worry about turning deadly. He was trained to kill; Artemis wasn't. She would protect Sol with her life, but she wasn't a trained attack dog like Apollo. But Sol elected not to tell Parker that. The other nan probably wouldn't believe him anyway. Few did, until they actually saw Apollo in action.
Sol followed his gaze. "There should be a new trunk beside your hammock, and your things should already be in it." He'd had everything they bought sent on ahead to the ship so they wouldn't have to carry it.
~ • ~ • ~ Aidan didn't look convinced. He frowned at the front door, worry written into his young features. After a minute, he hurried to Anya's side to give her a hug. He held on tight for several seconds before getting distracted by the sketchbooks scattered about. He drew away to puck one up. It had fallen open to a page that depicted a group of laughing kids ranging from ten to fourteen. Aidan, of course, didn't know any of them, but five would be familiar to Anya: Morgan, Senza, Isla, Arianna, and Silas.
Aidan turned from the image to Anya. "Who are they?" he asked. "Did Seth draw this? Do you think he'll mind if I look through it? The pictures are really pretty." He caught sight if the book on the couch, still open on Nick and Ignatius's image. His eyes widened. "I know him!"

"Oh, right," Parker murmured. He had forgotten that part. He didn't know how since neither one of them had been carrying anything. There would be nothing for him to do then if the clothes were already stored away in the trunk. That just left the cake in his hands and no more room for him to stall. "Than I guess I'll just go put this in your fridge then," he said.
~*~*~
The hug surprised her. Anya hadn't been expecting it, not when the boy showed so much worry for Seth. She had thought he would go and try to follow Seth, wherever he may be. But instead he had thrown himself at her. After the shock wore off, she returned the gesture without a word, before Aidan pulled away.
"Yeah, Seth drew them," she answered, shifting on the couch so she was facing forward and her legs were crossed underneath her. "Those are a couple of kids Seth trained with when he was younger. This," she pointed to Morgan, "is his best friend, Morgan. Or more like partner in crime." She listed off the other's names, leaving out the details of Arianna being an ex and Senza wasn't much of his friend any more, but she did mention Silas was more or less his rival. She was ready to answer any other questions he might have about them or the other pages, but Aidan's exclamation stopped her. "You do?" she asked. "How?"
~*~*~
To say Lawrence was furious was an understatement. He had eyes and ears all over the place, including the camp. There was nothing that went on that he didn't know about. So the moment he got word that Morgan had left after Ian. Part of him had expected the man to run off with as many questions he had been asking, but he had hoped he would have had more sense than that. However, it wasn't until Ian returned and gave his full report that really set his anger flaring. Orders had been sent to bring the Rider in as soon as Morgan set foot in camp again.
One of these runners had spotted Morgan as he was heading from the dragons' clearing. Immediately, he ran forward, not wanting to risk the spymaster's rage. "Morgan Reilly?" he called as he approached.

Sol started to respond, but a commotion on the dock caught his attention. He glanced over Parker's shoulder, then suddenly grabbed a handful of his shirt and dragged him into the shadows cast by the quarterdeck. Sol only stopped when his back hit the door to his room. He uttered a quiet command to his dogs, which had them both dropping to their bellies on either side of him. The four of them were far from invisible, but they were hidden well enough in the darkness that the group of drunk crewmen who were boarding the ship didn't notice them. They were stumbling along more than they were walking, and laughing hysterically every time someone fell.
It took longer than it should have for them all to get below. As soon as the last man was gone, Sol released his hold on Parker and dropped his hand. "Sorry," he said, leaning more fully into the door. "You said you wanted to avoid their teasing. It's just a pain in the ass when they're sober, but they can sometimes get mean without really meaning to when they're wasted." He shot a disappointed glare after the men. "And they were definitely wasted." Sol didn't have any strict rules regarding his crew drinking, so long as it never interfered with how they handled the ship during the day.
~ • ~ • ~ Aidan clutched the image of Seth's friends to his chest so he'd have a free hand to pull the other sketch closer. He studied Nick's and Ignatius's likeness for a moment before nodding. "Yeah. He was my dad's friend. I only saw him once, and I didn't really talk to him at first, but his dragon was really nice. He pretended to be grumpy, but I knew he wasn't. He said his name was Ig...Ignitus? Something like that. And his Rider was, uh, Nick. Nick Wilder. I told him that was a cool last name, and he said he thought so too, and that was why he chose it. I didn't know you could choose your name, and I told him so, and he said normally you don't, but his case was special. And when I asked him why, he was quite for a really long time. Dad scolded me for asking so many questions, but Nick told him it was okay. Then he told me he picked himself a new name because he was no longer the person who belonged to his original name. He was different, so his name should be different. Then he told me to always be true to me, and then he ruffled my hair and left."
~ • ~ • ~ Morgan noticed the runner before the runner noticed him, but he paid the young man no heed until he approached. Morgan stopped at the sound of his name. "That's me." He gave the other man a once over. "I'm guessing Lawrence sent you. I take it he's not wasting any time in chewing me out?"

Parker wasn't entirely sure what happened, but he was by no means complaining. Pressed up ashe was agaisnt him his heart had kicked into overdrive, and it took a moment to realize that this wasn't an action of passion but rather a need of stealth. Only when the drunk crewmates stumbled onto the deck did he understand.
"It's fine," Parker replied when the coast was clear, his voice a little more breathy than normal and a tad disappointed. "Uh, we should, um," his brain was fried. Whatever he was trying to say floated away as he found it very hard not focus solely on his lips, his own face burning.

"It sounds like your father was close to Nick," Anya commented. She went back and forth as to how to explain this. Seth wouldn't like her spilling all his secrets, but she felt as if she could at least skim over his details and state hers. "Nick was Seth's teacher, and apparently mine too, though I knew him as Jan. We kind of just found out he thought both of us before you got back."

Sol's gaze returned to Parker, and a knowing glint entered them as he took in Parker's flushed cheeks. When Parker failed to finish his sentence, Sol chuckled and lifted one hand to the back of Parker's head, pulling him closer. "We should what?" he asked quietly.
~ • ~ • ~ Aidan frowned, trying to understand the situation. "So... Seth didn't like that Nick taught you too? Why?" He was young, but he was smart enough to know he was missing something.
~ • ~ • ~ Morgan sighed. "Great," he muttered. He thanked the man, then set off for Lawrence's tent. He'd been hoping for a chance to check in with the Veras before talking to Lawrence, but he figured he was in enough trouble without adding a delay and making it worse.
He didn't run, but soon enough he was outside Lawrence's tent. He paused for a moment to take a deep breath, then straightened his shoulders and marched in.

In response, Sol reached back for the door handle and pushed the door open. He pulled Parker in with him, released the dogs from their down positions so they could come in too, and closed the door. To give Parker a bit of breathing room, and remove all obstacles from his path, he took the box of cake from him and brought it to the small cool box he had behind the bar. Once it was away,he turned around and leaned his elbows on the bar top. "Care for a drink?"
~ • ~ • ~ Aidan's eyes widened. "Seth was Nick's secret mission? Or, wait. Where you Nick's secret mission? I wasn't supposed to know about it, but me and Momma were playing hide-and-seek one day, and I hid in the council room because no one was using it, but then they were using it while I was still hiding so I heard a bunch of stuff I wasn't allowed to know."

Parker followed him into the room, his feet seeming to move on their own despite the stalling of his brain. Yet he was snapped out of it the moment Sol stepped away from him, taking his cake with him. Taking a deep breath, the man tried to regain his composure so he wouldn't embarrass himself too badly. "I could go for a beer," he answered, stepping up to the car opposite of him.
~*~*~
"Secrete mission?" Anya asked. "I don't know about that, but I guess then it really wouldn't have been a secret if he had told anyone. What all did you hear about it? Maybe we can figure it out."
~*~*~
Lawrence was ready for Morgan when he finally entered his tent. For once, there was no paperwork occupying his attention. There was nothing before him that would have been taking his focus away. So when Morgan entered, he was meeting his gaze the moment he was within sight. "Take a seat," he said. No greeting, no small talk. His tone held no room for argument.

Sol got two and popped the lids off. He put the caps right in the garbage before handing one to Parker on his way back around the bar. He leaned his hip against the bar and considered the other man in silence as he lifted his bottle to his lips and took a drink.
~ • ~ • ~ Aidan's brow furrowed in deep thought as he tried to remember. "Um. He didn't tell just anyone. He told the other leaders. Dad always said that's what made our cause better than the bad guys, because we decided things as a team instead of just listening to one person give orders all the time. I still don't really know what he meant. Oh! But I remember one of the leaders mentioning the Dragonslayer. I remember cause that's a not nice name. They said the Dragonslayer was getting too dangerous and it was time to take him out. I don't know what that means either, but the Big Boss — that's what Dad called him — said absolutely not. Then they all argued for a while, and then Nick spoke up and said he had a plan. He said the Rider of his unhatched dragon was the key, and he was going to find him. They talked a bit more, said not to tell anyone outside of that room about Nick's mission, and then they left and I went and found Momma and never said anything, just like them." Aidan nodded, looking pleased with himself.
~ • ~ • ~ Morgan held back another sigh. He came further into the tent and sat in the chair across from the older man. He had to forcibly bite his tongue to hold back a witty comment, and waited in tense silence for the lecture to begin.

Parker took the beer and took a swig while Sol moved out from behind the bar. It was hard to not feel the other man's eyes on him, and, though he didn't necessary mind, it didn't help him with the struggle of acting normal. He never liked silence, not unless it was between him and someone he knew well. Silence made him worry. Stealing a quick glance at Sol, he kind of wished he hadn't. He didn't know what had happened, but his mind was working overtime now, pointing out all those little details that just held his attraction for the captain. It was screaming at him that there was far too much space between him and his fling. "I thought you didn't allow alcohol on the ship?" he asked, hoping to fill silence.
~*~*~
That certainly wasn't the best news in the world to here. Of course, she wasn't a fool. Anya knew the Rebels would see Seth as a threat and wish to kill him for many reasons. Nick defending him wasn't a surprise, but their top leader? That was had no idea about. Nor why she would be the key to stopping Seth. "Well, I don't know much about the Dragonslayer part," she started, and it was true, to some extent, "but Corrik was the egg Nick was talking about. So I guess that would make me and him both Nick's secrete mission."
~*~*~
"Tell me, what in the godsdamn world told you it would be a good idea to act on your own accord?" Lawrence started as soon as Morgan had sat down. There was a warning in his voice, that no matter what was said was going to be a wrong answer. If Morgan was going to defend himself, then there had better be a world shattering reason behind his actions.

Of course, that was a perfectly good reason for it. Who was going to complain about Sol having a bar in his room? He was the captain after all. Leaving the bar, he made his way over and took the open space on the sofa that wasn't being taken up by Artemis. He sat, keeping just a few inches between them so he wasn't sitting right on top of him.
~*~*~
Anya gave him a smile. "No, I don't think he'll mind, but I think you need to go get cleaned up for the night before you do. Otherwise, you'll be up all night looking through them all."
~*~*~
Lawrence's expression darkened at his comment. "If you're going to be a cocky little bastard, you can leave right now," he told him. "Not just my office, but the whole camp. I'm not going to waste my time or resources to keep you around if you've got no more respect for me and the order we keep than you do the dirt you walk on. You will get no help from us, nor will I promise any mercy to you or Seth if he's found by our agents in the field. I am a man of little patience, and I will not tolerate that attitude."
