Sol smiled but didn't comment. Maybe once his mother would have been put out if he was being criticized by others, but now she was too concerned with appearances. And him pouring a drink on some important person who was a guest in her home would not be good for her image. But since he didn't really want to discuss his mother, he focused on the other half of the conversation. "That's really neat. Some talent or lots, you should sing with the crew some time. We don't do bonfires, but some nights they'll gather on the deck and sing sea shanties. It's pretty fun, especially when the guys get serious and pull out their instruments."
~ • ~ • ~ ( Star is trained actually (her first owner was a sheep herder), but Aidan's not. He knows the cues and the basics of herding (pretty much as much as I do xD), but it takes a little more than that to really herd sheep. At least, I'm assuming it does, otherwise anyone could do it. xD But yeah, second or third place is probably the best Aidan can get. However, I was thinking there could also be, like, a mini competition within the real competition. Something like, Best Dog/Person Team, and/or a fun agility course that each pair could do. Although, I feel like that one would be something else entirely, maybe even require an entry fee or something cause maybe it's some out of town people who put that together? I don't know, but I thought that could be something fun for Aidan and Star to try. Heck, maybe Seth could do it too with his new puppy, just for kicks. xD )
~ • ~ • ~ Morgan gave him a hard look. "I'm also not an official Rebel, and therefore don't take orders from any of you. I'm not going anywhere but wherever Kyra is, and nothing you say or do will change my mind."

They mentioned something about that several times, but I think Quill said that happened more during longer voyages when you guys don't head to port every other day," Parker replied. "It sounds like fun, but I don't think I'll get a chance to be apart of them. Unless of course, I misheard or misunderstood. I guess I showed have asked for clarification on that."
~•~•~
(Oh, yeah, my faulty memory strikes again. 🤦♀️ You did mention something about that. Still, I'm sure there's still that one farmer kid that lives and breathes herding sheep and would still win no matter what. XD And even coming in third would give people an idea of Star's potential and thus the potential of her puppies. But yes, I think having the little mini categories and awards is something they would have. And the idea of the puppies doing an agility course is the cutest thing! That should totally be a thing. XD )
~•~•~
"I don't care what you are or aren't. You'll be putting us at greater risk. Two dragons are harder to hide than one. AMD not just risking our lives, but Kyra's too. If they see both of us and think it's an attack, they might just kill her. Is that what you want?"

Sol shrugged. "Usually, yes. The crew uses those nights to let loose and drink, which they do whenever we're ashore so doing that on the ship is kind of moot when we won't be at sea long." He grinned. "Maybe at our next port I can just convince their drunken asses to start singing in the middle of the barroom. They'd totally do it."
~ • ~ • ~ ( xD Yeah, probably. So Aidan will get... third? Or second? I can see him managing to snag second on Star's skill alone, but third might be better for NOT giving him a big ego. xD All right, cool. We'll have Seth and Anya take him there to cheer him up when he doesn't win. ;D Maybe Seth can drop a bunch of money to rent the whole agility space for an extended period so they can all play with the puppies. xD )
~ • ~ • ~ Morgan shook his head. "I know what I'm doing. No one is going to see Kyon, or me if I can help it." Morgan had spent his whole life downplaying what he was capable of, but with Kyra's life possibly on the line... he wouldn't hold back, not one iota. The world was about to see exactly what the Dawnslayer was capable of.
Without waiting for a response, Kyon suddenly started flying faster, overtaking Shara and rocketing ahead as if the wind itself was pushing him forward.

Sol just smiled behind his glass. After a minute, he changed the subject. "I'm sorry I won't have you home for your birthday. What do you usually do for that?"
~ • ~ • ~ The competition was simple and to the point. Each team, made up of one kid between the ages of eight and thirteen and one dog, had to get a flock of six ewes from one round pen to another. They had to cross a space that was about half the size of a football field, and while there weren't any true obstacles, the noise of the onlookers, the cheers of kids' families, and the excited barking of impatient dogs kept the sheep on edge just enough to add a bit of challenge. However the hardest part, Seth noticed quickly, was actually getting all the sheep into the destination pen. The opening was big enough for three sheep to stand comfortably side by side, but they never moved in an orderly fashion and therefore tended to bottleneck — if they went in at all. Several times half the sheep went in fine while the rest split up and went around the whole pen. When that happened, kid and dog had to work extra hard and extra fast to get the strays back where they were supposed to be. In the end, it would be the team with the fasted trip — starting when the first pen was opened and the sheep released, ending when the second pen closed behind the sheep — who won. A few kids chose to "sacrifice" a sheep or two in order to get a decent time with the cooperative sheep in the pen. This resulted in a time penalty, but if the team was quick enough getting the majority of the flock in the pen, it sometimes proved worth it.
As promised, Aidan went last. At first, that made him antsy and impatient, and had him asking how much longer every five minutes. He only stopped when Seth crouched beside him and helped him watch and learn. He asked Aidan a bunch of questions about sheep and herding first, and once he had an understanding of how it all worked (helped along by watching and learning himself), he was able to point out to Aidan what the other teams were doing right, and what they were doing wrong. Before long, Aidan was spotting the strengths and weaknesses in the other teams' strategies all on his own, and he and Seth turned it into a game while also planning out their own strategy — something Aidan hadn't thought to do until then. By the time it was his turn, Aidan had a solid strategy in mind that would hopefully employ all the strengths needed to win and none of the weaknesses.
The time to beat was eight minutes and thirty-five seconds. When Aidan's name was called, he swallowed nervously, then straightened his shoulders and headed for the starting line beside the first pen. Star trotted along confidently at his side, her focused gaze already on the sheep. Seth rose out of his crouch and stepped back to Anya's side, though he didn't look away from Aidan. As he put his hands in his pockets, he found he was almost as nervous as the kid was.
Aidan took up his spot to one side of the pen. The sheep herder who had lent a portion of his flock to this competition stood at the ready by the gate. The man in charge of the timer raised his hand, then lowered it. The shepherd unlatched the gate, and Aidan released Star from her leash.
The dog needed no guidance. She slunk low but fast right for the sheep. She slipped through the gate and circled the flock, hugging the fence. It didn't take much more than that to send the lot of them trotting out of the pen. Star followed right behind them as Aidan began calling cues that would get her to herd them for the far pen.
Things were looking great. Aidan and Star were moving well and making great time. In fact, their first half was quicker and better than all the teams before them. Most of it was Star's killer herding instincts, but it was clear Aidan was doing his best to remember everything him and Seth talked about beforehand. They were a little more than halfway there when things went wrong.
A pair of particularly rowdy dogs decided to turn their play fight into a real fight. It was quick, their humans fast in pulling them apart, but their fierce snarls during the brief scuffle were loud and vicious enough to panic the ewes. They scattered, bleating in terror. Star was quick enough to get four of them right back into their collected huddle, but two took off for the other side of the field.
Seth muttered a curse, but Aidan, after a moment of wide-eyed shock, made a snap decision. He directed Star and the remaining sheep toward the waiting pen. Star obeyed, and within minutes all four of them were in the pen. Aidan closed the gate, but stopped before latching it, which would cue the timekeeper to halt his timer. Instead, holding the gate mostly closed with one hand, he turned and pointed his other hand at the two strays. "Go get 'em, girl."
It was all he had to say. Star took off like a rocket, flying across the space like a shooting star. She went wide around the two sheep and slowed to a stop on the far side of them. She stalked toward them, gaze intensely focused, then suddenly surged forward two steps. Just like that, the sheep began hustling it back toward the pen where Aidan waited. With absolutely perfect timing, he opened the gate wide so Star could get them in, and shut it soundly behind them. The latch clicked, stopping the timer and earning a round of cheers from the audience.
Aidan rained praise on Star before hurrying back to Seth and Anya to wait while the judges tallied up the times. He was greeted with a big hug from Seth that lifted him right off his feet. "Way to go, kiddo. You were awesome."

Parker shrugged and took a moment to eat a bite of food and mask the pang of disappointment as he was reminded of that. No, he wasn't glad to be missing his birthday away from his family, but that wasn't Sol's fault. He would have been spending in as a slave if he hadn't come along. "It's okay," he said. "We never do anything big. Mama just makes a huge dinner, and then Anya and I get dragged to the bar by siblings and friends to celebrate. Nothing too major. Really, it'll just be weird not having her around to celebrate with. We've never spent a birthday apart."
~*~*~
Anya could tell Aidan was getting nervous in his waiting. Even if it was a friendly competition, the kids always took it seriously. They had a certain amount of bragging rights among their peers if nothing else. She would have offered the boy some advice, but Seth had bet her to it. In truth, Seth was the best person to help calm the boy and keep him focused.
When it was finally time for Aidan and Star to compete, she wished him luck. Seth's advice had helped him. Aidan entered the field with confidence, running after dog and sheep. Things were going very well for him, and she was proud to see that he would be a good contender for first. Until, of course, the scuffle between the dogs on the sidelines complicated things. The moment the sheep broke rank, her excitement fell. It was hard to regroup the sheep into one group again in a timeline manner. She had done it enough herself to know it was more hassle than it seemed. However, Aidan wasn't calling it a quits. Surprising nearly everyone, Aidan found a way to salvage their run and do so without loosing too much time.
After Seth had his hug, Anya gave the boy one too. "You were great! I've never seen anyone think that fast in the competition before," she told him. "Even the adults have trouble when the sheep scatter. You'll get some extra points for that."

Sol watched Parker, his gaze sympathetic. He wasn't big on parties, but growing up his mother had always made sure he was home for his birthday. She stopped trying when he joined the navy, and he never bothered to go. Sometimes, if he was convinced to attend Solstice, he would stay through to his birthday, but he preferred the company of his crew. But Parker's home life was clearly better than Sol's had ever been. Sol wished it was within his power to get the other man home in time for it.
"I can ask Cillian to make your favorites that day if you want. And I'm sure if you tell Quill or Mason, they'll drag you to a bar. Actually, if we're in port they'll probably drag you there regardless if they know."
~ • ~ • ~ Aidan was beaming as they showered praise on him. He even got a couple compliments from nearby people. He bounced eagerly on his toes as he waited for the judge's announcement. When it came, however, his spark dimmed a little.
Thanks to the scattered sheep, Aidan's time put him in the third place spot. Which was still really good, considering it was his first time and he was the youngest competitor, but he couldn't help feeling a little disappointed. That is, until he was awarded a prize for Best Teamwork. He received a small gold plastic trophy depicting a shepherd and his dog, with an inscription on the base declaring him and Star the best team of the year. And Star got a gold colored bandana with #1 Sheepdog written on it. By the time he came running back from the judge's stand with his trophy and bronze ribbon, he was beaming again.

Parker gave a small laugh at that, believing every word. "You don't have to go through that trouble," he told him. "I'm a big boy. I don't have to have a celebration for my birthday. It's not going to be the end of the world. Besides, I'm sure my family will make up for it whenever I get back, so there's no sense in asking Cillian to bother. And those two drag me to bars now, so that'll be nothing new," he said.
~*~*~
The announcement of the winners were no surprise to her. Anya had been able to tell which teams would have won, and having Aidan in third place was a great result to the competition. Maybe not in Aidan's mind, but he seemed pretty proud of himself when he and Star came running back with their prizes. "We're going to have to find a place to show off that trophy," she told him, smiling.

Sol raised a brow right back and smirked. "I took you on two dates. I don't date, so the fact I've taken you on two is pretty remarkable in itself. You've also spent a night in my bedroom, which may not seem that impressive since I let a spoiled princess occupy it for two weeks, but it is. Then there's the new wardrobe I just bought you, and I'm paying your way home. But what makes that last one count is that, with you, it doesn't feel like I'm just doing my job. I'm doing it because I want to."
~ • ~ • ~ Aidan grinned. "He could have a puppy too, and then he'd always have help."
Seth chuckled. "If we go home without selling any of them then maybe he will. Until then —"
"Excuse me. Sorry." A woman stood behind them, smiling sheepishly. "I couldn't help but overhear. You say you're selling puppies? And your number one sheepdog is the mother?"
Seth nodded. "That's right. We've had people inquiring about them all day."
"But no sales?"
"Not yet."
The woman grinned. "Well, consider one sold. May I say hi?"
Seth shrugged. "Sure." Aidan rounded up the puppies, and Seth scooped his up as the boy took over the conversation with the woman, much as he had all day. He only faltered when she actually chose a puppy and asked how much for her.
"Oh. Um..."
Seth suggested a price, one he thought was fair. The puppies were mutts, but they were healthy and had so far proved to have great temperaments, plus they each had the potential for their mother's intelligence and usefulness in the life of a sheepdog.
The woman agreed to the price, so clearly she saw their potential as well. She told Aidan she would pick up the puppy and bring the money on Monday. "I'm assuming you're staying at the Dorreh farm?" She cast a glance at Anya whdn she asked.

Parker's instinct was to argue that hardly counted as spoiling but stopped himself. Sure, the fact that he was paying his way home and buying him clothes would have counted, but he had said it himself: he was doing that with all the rescues. The whole dating and spending a night in his room didn't sound like much either, but for someone like Sol, who didn't date apparently, it had to mean more than it seemed. He shrugged a bit, suddenly sheepish and not really knowing how to respond. "I don't know why you'd want to, but if you like spoiling me, does that mean we'll be getting dessert?" He asked.
~•~•~
Throughout the sale, Anya couldn't help but smile. The day was going well for Aidan and the puppies, and this sell was only adding to the good fortune he was having. "Yes, ma'am, they are. We'll be around Monday and we'll have them all set for you," she told her.

Sol laughed. "Of course. The desserts here are amazing." Something behind him caught his eye and he stood. "Excuse me a minute." He moved past the table and approached the woman he had spotted coming toward them from the kitchen. She was older, mid to late forties, but still good looking in her own way.
She was grinning widely as Sol reached her. "Hello, Charlotte. You're as lovely as ever."
She laughed. "Me? Look at you! I swear, you get handsomer ever time I see you."
He chuckled. "I really don't, but thank you." He hugged her and placed a kiss on her cheek. "How have you been, Charlotte?"
"Good, dear. Just maybe not as good as you." She had spotted Parker, and was grinning rather fiendishly. "Your friend is adorable."
Sol looked at Parker as well and smirked. "I know." He beckoned Parker over with a crooked finger.
~ • ~ • ~ The woman nodded and thanked them again. She gave the puppies one more pet, then bid them goodbye and went on her way.
As soon as she was gone, Seth put his puppy back on the ground. "So what next?" he asked. "What else is there to do here?"

(Gosh I love the fact that he admits Parker's cute without specifically saying he's cute. XD)
As Sol got up to leave, Parker turned his head to see what had taken his attention. He noticed a middle aged woman heading in their direction and figured she must have been Charlotte. Curiosity satisfied, he was just about to turn back and scan the rest of the restuarant while he waited, but noticed Sol was beckoning for him. Not really sure what for, Parker rose and went to the pair.

Anya bid the woman a farewell before turning to Seth to answer his question. "Well there's plenty of games to play," she said. All along the street heading for the square, there were arcade style games set up. "There's also other little competitions we can try, an agility course for the dogs, or we can head and find something to eat."

As Parker reached them, Sol placed one hand on his arm and introduced, "Parker, this is Charlotte. She's an old friend of the family. Charlotte, this is Parker. He's on an unplanned adventure with us."
Charlotte grinned wryly. "Aren't all your adventures unplanned?"
"Of course not," Sol said with mock insult. He ruined it with a wink. "Just the best ones are."
She laughed and offered a hand to Parker. "Well then, you're in good hands. It's a pleasure to meet you, dear."

Charlotte nodded. "I'll bring you the house special," she decided. She turned to return to the kitchen, only to spin back with a "Oh! I almost forgot." She reached into her apron and pulled out two large dog biscuits. Instantly, Apollo and Artemis were up and out from under the table and sitting in nice sits right in front of her.
"Wow," Sol said dryly. "I don't think I've ever seen them move that fast."
"Oh, hush," Charlotte chided good-naturedly. She offered each dog a treat, and they both accepted it with utmost care. Artemis took hers back under the table, but Apollo crunched his down right there, making a crumbly mess that he spent a minute cleaning up before turning his eyes back to Charlotte for more. She laughed. "I'm afraid that's all I've got, sweetness." She gave his ears a good scratch to make up for it.

Sol shot him a bland look. "I feed him plenty. You eat snacks between meals, don't you? Doesn't always mean you're hungry. You could be bored. Or feeling snackish. It's no different with them."
Charlotte laughed at the two of them but said nothing as she turned around and returned to the kitchen for their dessert.
~ • ~ • ~ Seth followed her. As soon as it was their turn and they were inside, Seth made sure the gate was closed securely before he started unclipping leashes. Aidan was already encouraging Star through the course, one obstacle at a time. As soon as the pups were free, two went running after Star, one chased after a leaf that blew past his nose, and the fourth, Seth's, sat down on his foot and started pulling at his laces, making Seth laugh.
