When the door opened, the woman smiled. "Good morning. I'm Emma, Matthias's wife," she introduced herself. "He told me what happened last night. I want to thank you for helping our Dallas."
~*
"What if I don't want the glory?" Charles asked, wiping his brushes clean and returning them to the bag she had used to carry all this stuff in. "Oh, of course," Alexa said smiling and opening the door wider. She also waved her hand like it was no big deal because it wasn't. She wasn't going to leave someone hurt on the side of the road. "I'm sure anyone would do the same thing." --- "Too bad so sad," Amelia grinned and couldn't help but giggle when she continued, "maybe you can make a silver coin off of it or two, maybe less."

"Not everyone, sadly, but let's not start a conversation on the morals of people," Emma said, smiling. "Breakfast is almost done. Would you like to join us? We have some food for your dog as well if he or she is willing to take it."
~*
Charles gave her a somewhat hurt look when she stated the value of his piece, though he really couldn't argue with it. However, another chuckle filled the air, and he shook his head. "Good or no, it was an afternoon well spent," he told her. "I guess I'll have no choice but to carry it back with me. Perhaps I shall gift it to Burrich. I'm sure he'd appreciate it." Not really, but it would be amusing.

One you recommended, actually: Six of Crows. And my second hiatus was thanks to its sequel, Crooked Kingdoms. Those books were SO FREAKING GOOD. I want more. o.o “Great!” Cami grinned. “Mom's about to bring out lunch, and then we're doing cake. And…” She shot Seth a puppy dog stare. “We were really hoping you would sing Happy Birthday with that awesome band you brought.”
Seth didn't even have to think about it. “No.” As soon as she'd turned those eyes on him, he'd known this request was coning. Heck, as soon as he decided to bring a band, he'd known Cami would eventually ask him to sing something. That's what he got for singing her to sleep when she was younger.
Cami pouted. “Aw, come on. I know ‘Happy Birthday’ is boring, but you can improvise it, make it your own. So long as it's not insulting.”
“Well darn,” Seth drawled with mock disappointment. “And you almost had me sold.”
Cami brightened. “Really?”
“No.”
She sighed. “You're so mean. Will you at least sing something?”
Seth almost said no again, but at the last second changed his mind. “I'll think about it.” He gave Stel a scratch between her eyes, then swung around on the railing and dropped to the porch.
“Yay!” Cami cheered. ‘I'll think about it’ was essentially a ‘yes’ in her book. “Come on, let's go eat!” She spun around and dashed off.
Seth sighed and glanced at Anya. “Ready for round two?” He sure wasn't.

(I KNOW RIGHT?!?! Everyone in the group is so well developed, so unique, and shine in a way that doesn't overshadow anyone else. It's the best YA (I think it's considered YA) series that I have read like it. Those two books were the two that started my obsession with other books of thieves and what not. If you liked them, you would really like The Lies of Locke Lamora. He's just enough like Seth to get you hooked. XD I also have found an entire Six of Crows playlist on YouTube if you ever need some good jams to help you cope with no more Kaz. XD She's writing more books, the newest one, King of Scars, involves Nina as she tries to carry out the vision she and Mathias wanted for the Druskel (not how you spell it, and I'm too lazy to go look up the proper spelling). So maybe we'll see the rest of the group again soon. Except for Kuwei. That boy can fall off the face of the Earth for all I care.)
Seth could sing? Anya hadn't thought the man was one for such a hobby, but, then again, he was full of surprises. Surely singing would be the least surprising thing to discover. From the way Cami was begging, he must be good at least. She stayed silent through the exchange of siblings, however, not lending aid to try and sway him. She doubted it would have done anything. To be honest, she really didn't care to try at the moment. Their conversation had put a damper on her small hope of trying to repair the drift between them. "There won't be a round two if you try hard enough," the woman pointed out before following Cami back around to the front of the house. If Callum tried to pick a fight, all Seth had to do was ignore the other man. However, she had a feeling that taking to simple way about things wasn't what Seth was capable of.

Aye! The best books are those with the best developed characters. Kaz was my favourite, but I love Jesper and Wylan and their whole relationship too. xD The Lies of Locke Lamora is defintily on my to-read list, and I'm actually reading King of Scars currently. It's pretty good so far, though not as attention grabbing as the Six of Crows duology. Nikolai is another favourite of mine from that world. I just love the scheming men of the Grishaverse; they're the best. xD The author says she has plans to write another Six of Crows book, one set "many years down the line," or something like that. I'm so excited. :D Agreed. Seth arched one brow, amused and feeling somewhat chastised from that comment. He trailed after her, keeping a few paces behind. "Is that what you want? For me to stop picking a fight with Callum? Or," he corrected, "stop letting him pick fights with me?" Cause it certainly wasn't all Seth's doing when the two of them went at it. It took two to tango, and he wasn't just thinking of the fun kind.

(Kaz is my favorite too, and I adored Jesper and Wylan. Mostly Jesper. Please let me know what you think of Locke's group, because they're absolutely amazing. When you meet Bug, you'll understand why I say he deserves so much more than what he got. That's all I'll say because I might accidentally spoil something. XD I haven't read King of Scars yet myself, but I've heard that it wasn't as good as the hype for it was. One of the book reviewers I watch on YouTube said it hardly focused on Nikolai like it should have, and that's one reason I haven't started it yet. I like Nikolai too, so I may read it sooner or later, but right now, I have others to read, lol. And she is? I did not know that. YAY!)
She could think of half a million things she wanted him to do, but, apparently, he wasn't even going to entertain the idea of what she would propose. So Anya he to take a few seconds to let the urge of a quick reply subside before responding. "I haven't exactly heard you offer a kind word without being snarky or sarcastic since you've been here," she pointed out. "A little more effort on your part surely wouldn't hurt anything. If you stopped baiting him, he might not try to start a fight."

I will also understand if you don't like it as much as I do, so don't be afraid to tell me your honest opinion. XD Tell me if there's any redemption for the story. I'll use it to judge if it's worth my time. XD)
"Have you ever tried?" Anya asked, stealing a glance back at him. While, yes, she wasn't forgetting that Callum was not an innocent party in the fights. The older brother had used blows that were uncalled for, and if she could, she would lecture him just as much as she wanted to lecture Seth. Neither was safe, however, she wasn't inclined to do so here while there was a party happening around them.

Yes please!!! :D Don't worry, when it comes to books, I'm always honest. xD Aye aye! *salutes* xD Seth shrugged one shoulder. "Eh... no. No I have not. Not since we were kids, anyway. When I first left to join the Riders, we weren't exactly on good terms. Every time I saw him afterward, our relationship just seemed to spiral farther downhill, until it reached its lowest point when he figured out exactly what I left home to train for." That had been a very dark day, and it was one Seth tried to avoid thinking about. Callum wasn't the only one who'd figured out what Seth did for Genevieve that day, though thankfully, he was the only one who had been unable to forgive Seth for it.

(Okay!
- "Six of Crows" by Gio Navas (First one I came across, and does a lovely job of summarizing the characters.)
- Dirty Hands by Kendra Dantes (My favorite of hers)
- Brick by Brick by Kendra Dantes
- Forgiveness by Kendra Dantes (First one she wrote for the series, and is kind of vague. It could really relate to anything.)
Then there's just a lot of other songs I can recommend to listen to that just have a Six of Crows vibe to them, and I am obsessed with.)
"Then I think it's high time for you to try again," Anya stated. "Like I said before, let him be the jerk who chooses to ignore your efforts. If you don't give him a reason, then no one can fault you for not doing your part to be civil and making amends." It really wasn't hard to see in her mind. After all, how many petty fights between her brothers had she witnessed that always ended with them realizing how stupid they were being? It helped, too, that they could actually admit they were being stupid and could apologize for it. Seth and Callum, however, seemed to be incapable of doing one or the other. Perhaps both if she were to be honest in her observations.

"Six of Crows" : OMG, that song was great. The artist captured the characters perfectly with just a few lines. <3
"Dirtyhands" : Not sure I like this artists voice, but that could just be because of the specific video I watched, but that aside, this captures Kaz almost perfectly. <3
"Brick by Brick" : This is another one that shows the artist really understood Kaz and his struggles in life. Not quite as good as "Dirtyhands" though.
"Forgiveness" : You're right, this one is very vague. But maybe it's supposed to be? It's definitely my least favourite, but it's still pretty good, and it sticks to the essence of the books if nothing else. Cami tipped her back and groaned. "Oh no. He's up to something. That's never a good thing where there are this many people around." She sighed, resigned. "Oh well." She took Anya's hand and started pulling her to the buffet table. "While we wait for Seth to show his hand, let's eat!"

"Six of Crows" is always my go to song. It's so perfect and pretty, even if the audio quality isn't the best. It's still amazing.
I can see how you wouldn't like her voice. I wasn't a huge fan of her at first, but the more I listened to the song, the more I accepted it. XD "Dirtyhands" is by far the best one, but I thought I'd mention the others just in case your opinions on them were different than mine.)
Willing to let the subject of what Seth was up to fade fro her mind for a bit, Anya followed Cami over to the buffet table. She had already been here over an hour and hadn't even ate a bite of the food. That was quickly about to change. "So where's Morgan?" she asked, scanning the crowd. If there was someone who might be able to intersect Seth and any bad idea he might be forming, Morgan would be that person. That is, if he had fair warning of it.

"Seth never does anything stupid," Morgan replied, then reconsidered. "Well, nothing he considers stupid. As evidenced by everyone else around him, his definition of stupid differs from others'. As for childish..." He shrugged. "We're talking about Seth and Callum here. The two of them have this habit of embodying childish."
Cami snickered into her cup of punch. "Ain't that the truth," she muttered.
Her comment made Morgan smirk, but he didn't respond. "In any case," he continued to Anya, only to be cut off by a screech from the stage. Everyone flinched slightly as their attention went to the little stage the band had set up. Morgan and Cami were no exceptions. They both turned to look at the stage with furrowed brows, their expressions almost mirrors of each other. They morphed into different expressions when they saw what the cause of the noise was: Seth.
He'd dragged a stool onto the stage, none too gently, and it had been the cause of the screech as it was shoved across the low wooden platform of the stage. As everyone's eyes turned to him, he gave them all a rakish grin. "Hello, everyone."
Cami bounced excitedly on her toes. "Yay! He's gonna sing for us!"
Morgan didn't look nearly as excited. "Uh. Are you sure that's a good thing?"

"And it's everyone else's definition of stupid that count," Anya pointed out. Whether Seth considered his actions stupid or not didn't matter. He was the man who flew straight into a waterfall to find a network of hidden caves. To her, that was stupid, even if his discovery was incredible. At least the fact of him being childish wasn't disputed. However, whatever discussion on the behavior of the man was going to be, the loud, grating screech filled the air. The woman flinched at the harsh sound. There were few things that irritated her, and noises such as those were the kind she could not stand. Luckily, it didn't last long. And, of course, Seth would have been the cause for it. Watching him, Anya tried to determine his motives behind that grin he wore. Was it because he was genuine excited for his surprise? Or was he simply enjoying having everyone's attention?

Seth considers the waterfall stunt a "calculated risk." xD And to Anya's last question, the answer is both. ;D Cami didn't respond to Morgan's question, though it proved to be a good one a few minutes later.
On the stage, Seth adjusted the microphone and tapped it once, making a whump-screech sound echo through the speakers. Satisfied the microphone was working, Seth spoke into it. "As you all know, it's Callum's birthday today. As some of you may not know, I'm his adopted brother. Nice to make your acquaintance." He gave the crowd and two finger salute and a wink, to which many of them laughed. Some shouted hellos back, and a few girls started moving closer to the stage with suggestive smiles.
Seth grinned and continued: "Our sister asked me to sing 'Happy Birthday,' and I've decided to oblige her. This isn't the traditional birthday song many of you are probably expecting, but I hope you enjoy it anyway." The crowd cheered as Seth signaled the band, and then they launched into a birthday song that was most definitely not traditional.

(No matter what he calls it, it's stupid to her. XD Seth does everything just for the attention. That much I've learned, lol.
... Where can I find someone who will animate Seth singing this glorious song? XD You can not know how hard I tried to hold in my laughter while listening to it due to the fact my family's within earshot. That's amazing.)
Anya waited as Seth gave his introduction and reason for being up on stage. It was safe to say that she was curious to hear what he was going to sing. Since she never expected such a skill from him, she wondered if he would settle for the traditional Happy Birthday song, or if he was planning on singing something else. She received the answer very quickly. At first, she wasn't sure what to make of it. Then, despite herself, she giggled. Passive aggressive as it might have been, it was definitely something she could see her brothers using for each other's birthdays. The kind of banter you gave to those you were truly close to. "Nice" it might not have been, it was certainly an act only a brother could have gotten away with.

That doesn't surprise me at all. xD True dat. ;D
I know, right?! I laugh every time I listen to it. It's freaking hilarious. xD Even before the song ended, the crowd was laughing and singing along with Seth. Morgan was bent double with mirth, and Cami was shaking with laughter of her own, though she had one hand over her mouth in an effort to stifle her merriment. The only people who weren't were Callum and Cresseida. Callum looked pissed, and Cresseida, while amused, was refusing to give Seth the satisfaction.
When the song was over, the crowd clapped and cheered. Seth gave them a bow. "Thank you, thank you. I had to start with a laugh. This party has been way too mellow so far. Now I'll sing a real Happy Birthday song that's actually nice." His eyes found Anya's as he said 'nice,' and he shot her a smile as the band started playing again.

(She's immune to the excuses boys give, and she just calls things as they are. XD
The second one's good too. Much better for the occasion, but I don't think Cal's going to let himself be flattered by it.)
And just like that, Seth had stolen the entire crowd over to his antics. Probably not the best move, but one that was too late to do anything about. She joined in with the applause at the end just because it would have been useless to pretend she hadn't enjoyed it like the rest of the people. At the directed comment to her, the young woman could only shake her head. How did he manage it? One moment she was questioning him and his life choices, and the next he had her laughing and drawing her in with that irritating, self-assured grin. Today had been a weird one for her opinions of the man, that was for sure. It made her wonder what would happen if she passed her test and got the okay to travel while she trained. He said Morgan might run into them, but would Seth ever stumble across them? Would he stop to talk with her? Or would he simply carry on with whatever he was doing? Both as possible depending on what happened between then and now. But she pushed those thoughts aside. Now was her break from all that stuff. She didn't want to think of that. Instead, she wanted to enjoy the party while she was here.

That is a very good trait to have. xD
Probably not, but if we're being honest here, Seth didn't sing it for Call. ;D The applause at the end of the second song was louder than it had been for the first song, mostly because no one was too busy laughing this time. Part of it was also because, when not singing in jest, Seth's voice was something you just couldn't help but listen to with rapt attention. He gave the crowd a bow, grinning all the while, and pointed out his frowning brother. "Happy birthday, Callum!" he called, grinning. The crowd repeated the 'happy birthday,' and then the cake was brought out.
Seth thanked and high-fived the band before leaving the stage. He was almost immediately surrounded by a group of girls who, until five minutes ago, hadn't shown him the slightest bit of interest. But now that he prove he could sing, he was suddenly a celebrity. Go figure. But Seth smiled and chatted with them anyway, though he brushed off every compliment sent his way. He appreciated them, but compliments had been few and far between for him growing up, so he tended to ignore them when they were given freely like this. These girls weren't complimenting him because he'd done a good job; they were just trying to get his attention. His attention he was more than happy to give; his gratitude he was not.
Over by the buffet tables, Morgan was, miraculously, still chuckling softly at the first song Seth had sung. Occasionally he would mutter a line from it, which would just send him into another fit of chuckles. Cami was shaking her head at the both of them,. "Boys," she muttered. "Right, Anya?"

(Well, she's got one good quality. XD
True, true. XD)
As before, Anya clapped along when the second song was over, noting the less than pleased look on Callum's face when Seth pointed him out. That could have either been a product of the first song, or he was just less than thrilled that Seth had stolen the spotlight. Either way, she didn't pay too much attention to it. Her eyes flickered back to Seth, watching as he left the stage only to be stopped by a group of girls. It was none of her concern, and after a performance like he had just given, it would only be natural that people would want to compliment his singing. A natural result for a job well done. Yet it left an unknown sting at the sight, one she wasn't quiet sure why she was feeling it. Maybe a part of her had hoped he would rejoin them once he was done. Still, why was it important if he stopped to talk with others he possibly knew first? Turning to Cami, Anya smiled to the other girl. "Tell me about it," she agreed, though she only realized what she was talking about after she had agreed to it. "I say we go get cake and let them amuse themselves."

Quiet, you. Anya has plenty of good qualities. ;P Cami grinned. "I knew there was a reason I liked you." She linked arms with Anya and led her across the lawn to the table that held the three tiered cake. "Two slices, please!" she ordered. "And make 'em big."
Cresseida looked from her daughter to Anya, trying not to smile. "But of course, dear." She cut Cami a big slice, as requested, but she cut Anya's a little smaller. She had a feeling the young Rider didn't have nearly as much of an appetite as Cami did; very few women could compete with Cami's appetite.
"Thanks, Mom!" Cami said as she accepted her plate. She took a bite and moaned. "Hm, that is so good. You're the best, Mom."
"Well, there is a reason I own a sweet shop," Cresseida pointed out dryly.
