(Okay. I apologize if my post isn't the best. I promise, it'll get somewhat better as we go along. Hopefully. If you don't want the font/color in my posts, just tell me. I like to make each response different so people can tell which part of my response is for them and what's for someone else.) It had been four long years since the last time she walked through the streets of Rouen. A decent sized city maybe five days ride from the capital, most of its visitors are people moving inward from the coast, looking for rest, goods, or a place to lie low. While it wasn't the largest city on the map, the city was still divided into two parts: the section where the high and mighty paraded around in fancy silks, and the slums. It was easy to tell which area you were in by the condition of the buildings and the company that walked beside you. Most folks didn't have any business in the slums, but the brown haired woman in her forest green cloak was heading straight for it. See, what most folks didn't know was that prices were better in the slums. People were desperate for anything, and would usually sell supplies and food at cheaper prices than they should. Hunger and threat of loosing their home to debt collectors usually did that to people.
Thayer casts her sights around the different store fronts, trying to remember where the book store she dealt in last time was. She was fairly certain she had taken the right direction. Over the bridge that ran through the swift running brook that cut through the southern corner, isolating it from the rest of the city, and second turn on the right. Yet so far, her searching had only brought up futile results. Perhaps she should ask for directions? Then again, how hard could it be to find one book store? Ten more minutes passed, and the woman was about to call it a quits on this road when her eyes found the faded signed swaying on one good rope. No one had bothered to fix it, and she doubted anyone ever would. Satisfied, she crossed the street and entered into the store.I’ll get a reply up later today ^^

(XD But not before Silas spills some beans about Seth. XD )
"I might check around after I've finished training and chores for the day," Anya said. Of course, her duties here would always be put first before she found other jobs. She wouldn't need much equipment if she ruined her chance of being a Rider for the Circle. Pulling another arrow from the quiver, she took aim once more. The arrows were a little off. They would have been too short had she been strong enough to pull the bow in a full draw. However, for the moment, they would do. She let the arrow fly to the target, gaining a centimeter closer to the bulls-eye. "They'll do," she told her mentor, looking back and giving her a smile. "Thank you for helping me find some. I'll be sure not to loose any so I can bring them back." It wouldn't be good on her part if she showed to be careless when it comes to borrowing shared weapons. Now, she knew it was impossible to not lose one or two, but since she would only be training with the arrows, she would imagine there would be no excuse in misplacing any of them.
(Okay, tenny! Take your time!)

( Well of course. It wouldn't be any fun otherwise. xD It'll be even better cause it'll be after Anya sees Seth doing bad, bad things, so she'll be all mad at him and won't want to work for him, but at the same time would just so he can give her answers. :D )
Alia nodded. "Alright, good. But don't worry too much about losing or replacing them. Then the Armourer won't have much to do." She grinned. "Right! Would you like to spend this lesson on practicing your aim with the bow? Or was there something else you wanted to practice today?"
When Seth finally left Genevieve's office, there was a strange feeling in his gut. He wasn't sure what it meant, but he definitely didn't like it. So he ignored it, and focused instead on his upcoming mission, which he was to leave for that night. That left him a lot of free time. So, more accuartely, he focused on what he would fill that time with.
He was distracted as he was passing the armoury by the sound of voices - one of them very familiar. He stopped by the half open door to look in and, sure enough, there was Anya, talking with her mentor. He also noticed, with some interest, that she had the bow he'd given her in her hand. Staying hidden behind the door, he put his hands in his pockets and settled in to watch for a couple minutes.

( Aye. xD Oh, but you know what would be funny? If Stel took Anya's side during that whole thing. Then Seth would have two females angry with him. xD )
Alia shot her a look of surprise and intrigue. "Has your magic manifested at all? I mean, we can work to make it manifest, but I've always found it's easier to work magic after it shows itself, by itself. Each Rider's power is, in it's most basic form, the same, but based on personality and preference, one's abilities tend to specialize with one specific power, or group of powers. I, for instance, am best with earth-type magic."
Seth made a face as he listened to the two women. Much as he enjoyed magic, he would always rather practice archery - which was a big reason why he was so good at it. Watching others learn was always fascinating, and he'd been looking forward to seeing Anya's skills improve. Although, seeing her practice her magic would be pretty interesting too - if she could summon it. Alia wasn't entirely right about the magic manifesting on its own, however. As he'd told Anya yesterday, it was already there, had been since Corrik hatched. She just had to find that bridge linking her to her dragon, and open it to the magic flowing between them. And she wouldn't be able to do that if she didn't try. Not easily, anyway.

(YES! XD That'd be amazing! He might be able to deal with Anya, but there's no way he's getting away from Stel.)
"Well, no, not really," Anya replied. "I've tried to summon it before, but it hasn't worked. So I was hoping to get more practice with it." That, and she wanted to have something to impress Seth with the next time they ran into each other. His words of encouragement still rang in her ears, and she doubted if the feeling of awe would ever fade from the memory. Seth believed she could use magic, as difficult as it was for her to make sense of right now. She wanted to prove his assumptions for her were correct. Improving her archery might also impress him, but she had a feeling that he'd be more nit-picky on that topic. So she would rather focus on the area that held the most variation of outcomes. She didn't know why she strove towards this goal. Maybe it was because he was one of the best and well established Riders. Or maybe it was simply because he had been the first Rider she had met and wished to keep a good image of herself in his eyes. It wasn't like that was the only thing she was hoping to achieve. The woman was curious to know what sort of magic she would lean towards. Part of her hoped it was like Alia's, focusing more on the earth. What better ways to help the people of the kingdom, especially the towns such as Carzan that have been hit by tragedy after tragedy, than to be able to repair the land in which they depended upon?

( Nope nope nope. Plus, he'll be so offended that his dragon is taking someone else's side. xD ) Alia nodded slowly. "Alright, if that's what you want. We'll head back outside, I think. Summoning magic is easier the first couple times when your dragon is right with you. You can hold onto the quiver as long as you need it," she added, already heading for the door. She was a little more than halfway when she stopped, eyes widening as she took in the tall figure standing in the doorway.
Seth met Alia's startled gaze and had to suppress a smile. He looked away quickly before he let it slip and focused on Anya. "Your arrows missed the bulls-eye," he commented mildly. He hadn't seen the shots, but he could clearly see the results. He didn't really care - she would get better, of that he had no doubt - but he enjoyed messing with her.

(This is now a thing. I will rebel if this does not happen. XD
YOU DID?! *squeals* I adore the works of John Flanagan. I know that they might be intended for a younger audience, but thanks to Will, I finally found a group that I could actually fit in with. The Rangers are the whole reason I got into archery to begin with. I do not drink coffee though, so I'm not sure if they'll accept me. XD I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed them. They're just endearing books, and the Brotherband Chronicles are just as wonderful. You will get attached to them so much. Okay, fangirl moment over. I apologize. xD)
A smile broke out on Anya's face when the other Rider agreed. The lesson might not have any noticeable results, but she didn't care. With an entire lesson to dedicate to searching for that flow of magic between Corrik and her, surely she would be able to do something. She was about to turn and retrieve the two arrows when her eyes caught sight of Seth by the door. Like Alia, she startled a little, having not heard him approach. How long had he been standing there? "And who says I was aiming for the bulls-eye?" she replied. She had, but why give him fuel? Besides, yesterday he had instructed her not to aim for the bulls-eye, but rather whatever she felt confident she could hit.

( No doubt. ;D Seth shrugged. "Not really. Everything I'll need is in a pocket, within easy access. So I actually have time to kill." He glanced at Alia. "If you don't mind my tagging along, I think I'll kill some of it watching a bit of your lesson."
Alia startled, surprised to be addressed directly by Seth. She could do little more than nod and stammer out her asset. It wasn't just that Seth was famous among the Riders; it was his behaviour. From what Alia had seen of him in the past, Seth was not a nice person. Yet the man before her now, while "nice" still wasn't what anyone would use to describe him, was a far cry from how he normally acted.
Seth smiled slightly at her, amused by her reaction to him, and turned back to Anya. "Stel has, yes, but she won't really be needed much for this mission, if at all. She'll fly me in, then keep her distance."

(Also, I'm ready to slap some sense into Jenny if she don't hurry up and marry poor Gilan. XD That boy's been patient and deserves a reward.)
"Are you sure?" Anya asked. Not that she would mind Seth watching. However, if he did have other responsibilities to finish, then she didn't want to keep the man from doing them. Then again, from what she had seen and by the way he was acting the day before, he probably wasn't thrilled to be going on this mission. So avoiding what needed to be done was his way of showing his disapproval. "If you want to, then I guess there's nothing stopping you.
"And I'm glad," she added as he informed her on his dragon's role in the mission. "That must mean this one's a little easier than the last if you won't be needing Stel's help." The woman was careful not to seem like she was prying for details. It was none of her concern what the mission was. If it was meant for her to know, than Genevieve would have told her it so she could pass it on to her son. But no, that was not how it was. She only hoped it would end better for Seth than the one before it.

( He does indeed. xD ) Seth gestured for Alia to lead the way to her desired training spot, then fell in beside Anya as they followed. He noticed with amusement that Alia kept speeding up and slowing down, as if torn between giving him and Anya some modicum of privacy, and listening to them - or him, more specifically, her curiosity getting to be too much. Seth thought about commenting, but decided to leave her to her internal struggle. Instead, he focused on Anya, and her comment. He knew she had to be curious, but he also knew she was too polite to ask or intentionally pry in any way. Had this been any other mission, that fact alone would have made him willing to simply tell her. But he didn't really want anyone privy to the details of this particular mission. Especially not Anya. "I wouldn't say easier," he said at length. "But Stel isn't exactly conductive to a successful stealth mission. She's a little hard to miss."

(Have you seen the books that follow Halt and Crowley as they're rebuilding the Ranger Corps? Those two are my absolute friendship pairing ever.)
"I guess you're right there," Anya admitted, laughing lightly. It was be hard to miss the towering dragon, even if she wasn't a bright silvery white that reflected any amount of light. She was sure she could be hard to miss when she wanted to be, but if the mission was located in a town, it would be better if Seth went alone. The conversation felt a little awkward to her, perhaps because there was a third person with them. She could tell Seth wasn't as relaxed as he usually was. His words only proving that, while not harsh, wasn't anything beyond polite formality. She wasn't sure if she should follow suit or just act as she always did. "I would wish you luck, but you'd probably say you don't need it."

( No worries, girlie. I don't have a lot of people to book talk with, so I totally get it. xD And he will definitely be learning that lesson sooner or later. xD )
Seth laughed, actually tipped his head back and laughed. "Oh you noticed that, did you? Damn. And I thougjt I was doing a good job hiding it." He shook his head with mock disappointment, smiling slightly.
A little ahead of them, Alia was holding the door open. She had frozen in the act and was staring wide-eyed at Seth. As he approached, he took hold of the door above her head and pulled it open wider. He arched one brow at her. "You planning on going outside, or are you just airing the indoors?"
A blush painted her cheeks, and she ducked her head. Muttering an apology, she hurried out and continued briskly toward her chosen training ground. Seth waited until Anya had gone out before him, then followed, letting the door swing shut behind him.

(Yeah, haha. If you like reading about thieves and angsty princes, I have a couple other book series you might like as well. XD Seth's going to be learning a lot of lessons the hard way soon. As will Anya, cause, boy does she need a wake up call.)
It was good hearing him laugh. Maybe it was just because she was used to making her brothers laugh, or perhaps it was his current demeanor, but whatever the reason, Anya prided herself on being able to have some kind of foothold in their playful banter. "I think everyone notices," she replied to him as she walked out of the room, following Alia. Her steps weren't as hurried, however, since she wasn't going to just rush off without him. Not when they were in the middle of a conversation, at least.

(Lol, then I highly recommend Six of Crows, The Lies of Locke Lamora, The Name of the Wind, and, for the angstiest 14 year old I have ever had the pleasure of reading about, Prince of Thorns. XD That it will be.)
"I think it might serve you well in some circumstances if you acted a little less self-important," Anya replied honestly. "But I don't think you'd be able to hide it all the time. It does seem to be a signature of your character, so it'd be a shame if you lost it. So, no, I guess I wouldn't rather you hide it."

(You must read at least Six of Crows and The Lies of Locke Lamora! They've got the same concept of following band of thieves, but SoC's is more YA while Locke Lamora (an adorably lucky son of a [w]itch) is less censored. I think you would enjoy both of them a lot.)
"If you were knocked down a couple of pegs, you wouldn't stay there long. You'd probably think nothing had happened, and continued as usual, if not a couple of notches worse," Anya replied. Now, that's not to say that she agreed with anyone having an attitude such as Seth's. Had it been anyone else on any different occasion, she might have agreed with the general public about him needing to calm down a little. Yet she knew the man was joking. She had witnessed her own brothers put on shows of egoistical bravado enough times to know when someone truly believes what he claims about himself and when it's for mere show. Seth had the skills to back up his claims, yes, but for the claims that were just a little grander than they should, she could hear the hint of sarcasm or mock in his voice, even if he couldn't tell it. No, Seth wasn't doing this because he thought himself better than the rest. At least, that's what she had gathered.
At his question, she turned her head as if to study the man from head to toe. What would she change about him? He's constant need to give her heart-attacks with all his secret tunnels and passageways? His lack of shame when referring to his nightly hobbies? "I think you should smile more," she told him, honestly. The one he was wearing now, small as it may be, lit up his usual stoic face. It made him look more approachable if nothing else.

( Aye. I'll probably read them all, cause they all sound awesome, and exactly the kind of books I like. ;D If you like angsty teenagers, then I hope you've read the Percy Jackson series, and all the other series' by Rick Riordan set in that world. If not, I highly recommend them. Riordan is very good at crafting angsty teenagers. xD Plus, they're just really great books. :3 ) Said smile vanished at her words, surprise taking its place as he stared at her. He canted his head thoughtfully, remembering all the times over the years when he'd wanted to smile but hid it, or should have smiled but didn't, compared to the times he did smile. There were many more instances for the first two than the latter. And the times he could remember smiling, it had always been brief and quickly squashed. It was hard to find reasons to smile living the life he led, and even the few bright spots in it - Stel, Camille and her family, Anya - could only do so much to break down that hardwired habit he had for hiding any sign of happiness.
His lips twisted into a sad parody of a smile, wistful and not at all happy. "Yeah," he said softly. His gaze lifted to meet hers, the expression in them somehow blank and yet filled with unnamed emotion at the same time. "Except, you know the problem with smiling, don't you?"

(Lol, you'll love Kaz from Six of Crows then. XD You'll love that entire gang. I've read the Magnus Chase series up until the newest book because the Norse gods have always been my favorite to learn about (Plus, sweet baby Hearth is best boi that needs to be protected from all harm). I'm going to try to get into the Percy Jackson series. I tried once before, but it just wasn't what I wanted to read at the moment, so I didn't get far. Maybe this time around will be better.)
A part of her was expecting for the smile to vanish. She didn't know why he had such a hard time smiling, but it was like something bad would happen if he did. Yesterday was the only day she had ever seen him smile on more than one or two occasions. It had only been the two of them, but it still counted. She watched as his lips took on an almost perfect rendition of a smile. The shape was right, but there was no sign of any true emotion to find in his eyes that spoke of amusement or happiness. "No, what is the problem?" she asked.

( Agreed. I freaking loved the Magnus books, but Percy's will always be my favs. Although, Apollo's books are pretty damn good too. xD ) He looked away, toward where Alia was waiting for them at her chosen destination. He wished, for a moment, that he hadn't said anything about it, because he knew his answer would only leave her with more questions, questions about himself he wasn't willing to talk about. But avoiding her unasked questions would be easier than ignoring the one he'd all but told her to ask. So he turned his gaze back to hers and answered simply, "The problem is that the things that make me happy, the things that give me reason to smile... they have this habit of being taken away." Permanently was what he didn't say, but it was implied in his tone.

(I think the Kane Chronicles would be interesting too. I just haven't gotten around to them. I'm still in my thief/assassin mood at the moment. XD )
Anya frowned, her steps slowing a little as she took in his answer. She knew she needed to start the day's training, but Seth's response seemed to be something of more importance. How could he claim that? Life was all about the give and take of things. That was the common knowledge. You will acquire something and, sooner or later, it will be gone again, either broken or dead. She learned the lesson at an early age when caring for the baby animals on her farm. It was no surprise that the woman got attached to them, so when they suddenly die or are carted away for slaughter, she had to accept it. Nothing lasted forever, but that wasn't a reason to not have happiness while you had them. "So you constantly keep yourself from being happy because of a 'what if?'" she asked. "What about Stel? Does she not make you happy? What about Camille? Or her mother?"
