What the title says. I've seen a number of them now. They're not openly discriminating against anything LGBT, but they specifically have a rule against any LGBT characters, under the claim that it would "make people uncomfortable." Is this allowed?

If it's their own RP, and they're not discriminating against the users themselves, then it's not violating any rules as far as I can tell. I mean, it's probably more like when you have a clan RP and the rules say "don't join as a queen/rogue/kit" or not join a clan with cats anywhere out of this pelt spectrum ect. ect. It's just their RP rules, I wouldn't take them too to heart.
Like, if an Rp was like "no she cat apprentices" or no ginger golden tabbies, well darn I wanted to join as one, but oh well, I'll just join as another character. As long as they don't discriminate against the members (ex: if you're _____, then don't join this rp, it's not for you), then it should be fine.
Like you can still join the rp and make a character, it just has to abide by the rules of that rp, and that's how it's always been.
If anything, just don't join the RP.

*shuffles notes* I just spent a little time going through the rules of almost every fan clan on first few pages of the Fan Clans. My findings: 5 asked nicely for you not to join with LGBTQ+ cats. 16 had no problem with you joining with LGBTQ+ cats and stated that they were fine with it in the rules. 25 gave no mention of whether you could or couldn't. 3 were WIP 2 Were clans that did not state that LGBTQ+ characters were aloud (or not aloud) but have/had LGBTQ+ characters in the clan with no problems. 5 clans didn't have rules at all. Three of the clans that asked you not to join with LGBTQ+ cats were bordering clans. And another 2 were made by the same person. Eight that gave no mention were bordering clans. Five of the clans who said you could join with LGBTQ+ cats were bordering clans. Many of the LGBTQ+ accepting clans were on the front page. I'm not trying to prove a point or anything. I was just bored.

As long as the Clan isn't behaving in a openly rude or discriminatory way, I think they have a right to politely ask that you not join with an LGBTQ+ character. It's their RP and their fun space, and the rules are there to create an environment for comfortable RPing for them. Some people just may not want to bring LGBTQ+ themes into their RP, and as long as they don't keep LGBTQ+ users from joining or behave in a hateful manner, I don't see a problem with allowing them to do that. As mintedstar/fur said, the majority allow LGBTQ+ characters, so if a user wishes to RP such a character there are plenty of options.

I mean I get where you're coming from but at the same time, gay people don't just stop existing because you're uncomfortable and by allowing people to exclude gay topics in RP, it's furthering discrimination in some respects.
But I guess changing the rules on a cat forum won't really change much so my point is moot.

Is it time to get the meme again Do it. Anyway, the level of cringe going on here is real, so I'm just going to say that, as a LGBT user, I do feel unwelcome when you tell me my characters have to be straight or I can't be in your RP. It doesn't matter that I'm technically allowed to join, because I'm not allowed to join with characters that reflect my life experiences. But at least I know who to avoid. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

lol just let people do what they want with their RP rules. It's their RP and they're not excluding people from joining. If you don't like it then just move on to a different RP, there's literally hundreds of them. If you intentionally look for issues, you'll always find one. Just be the mature person and turn away.

This is a touchy subject because they do have a right if they aren't banning people from joining or saying anything hateful or mean. Yeah, it's not nice that they don't want characters who happen to be LBGTQ+. It's not like they're banning people who are LBGTQ+ from joining. You don't have to join and if they're doing it because of religious beliefs, then it's better to respect that over starting fights. How I see it, you can't demand respect without giving some of it to a degree. I personally have no issue with members of the group and I try to make it clear that if you don't like characters or people who are LBGTQ+, it's not going to be the role-play for you.

I'm just addressing the discussion? If we're going to get into the difference between excluding users vs. excluding characters, then I have a right to comment on it. I've also... never tried to force my way into these RPs with a LGBT character, so??? There's that.

I understand. Your post just gave me a very silencing vibe. Like, "Don't talk about what bothers you! Just move along!" And I get where you're coming from about finding a new RP, but like... unfair rules deserve to be criticized, and it's not fair to tell me which kind of characters I can and can't use. Especially when that's just an excuse to target LGBT characters/people. Also, I don't appreciate being called immature. Just a thought.

I honestly wished this question didn't have to be asked. I think it's rude to not let LGBT+ characters in a roleplay even if it's not the members being singled out, but let's be honest for a minute. A member of the LGBT community isn't going to join an Rp that doesn't let them express themselves in a character. I believe it's allowed - Sakubi made a good point, on a linear plane it's similar to not allowing female/male characters or queen/kits or deciding a medicine cat can have a mate. They're not hating on members of the LGBT community. The owner of those roleplays have acknowledged and accepted that people aren't going to join because of that one rule.
So if they put 'no lgbt+ characters' then at least you know who to avoid/block/ignore.
