I know there's another thread here about this subject but it didn't look like it'd been too active as of late so I'm posting here.
Anyone else afraid of spiders (arachnophobiac)? What are your reasons for why? Psychologists believe that we are afraid of the things we've had direct experiences with that weren't good or were unpleasant. Others believe our fear of spiders is innate (fight or flight response), and that through natural selection throughout mankind's evolution, we grew to fear such creatures. There's also a few that believe we pick up on the fears of others and make them our own, as almost like a monkey see monkey do. And then there are some who believe that some people may have that fear due to underlying causes such as a disorder or autism. All theories, but nobody has determined any of then to be factual.
I am afraid of spiders, likely due to my childhood. When I was really young I had met the neighbor kid across the street and as it turns out our mothers were good friends, so we played all the time. She had a big fear of spiders, and I guess in a sense I adopted that fear and didn't want anything to do with them any more than she did. Whenever the two of us saw a spider, we'd be gone 40 miles the other way.
However, my fear of spiders is so bad, I honestly can't tell where my Anxiety ends and my arachnophobia begins. Even though it's possible I picked up on that fear when I was about 4 years old from my friend, I also think it's caused by my Anxiety, which I've come to the conclusion that I've had the disorder since I was 2, given how shy, scared, or nervous I was about a lot of things that can't otherwise be given any other explanation as to why. I've never had very bad experiences with spiders, such as being bitten or anything, then again it could be because I normally avoid them as much as physically possible. But the thought of them crawling on me, with the possibility of being bitten, frightens me to no end. And again, I don't know if that's actually my Anxiety or just a severe case of arachnophobia. I may have been bitten by a couple of small and harmless spiders, but I don't usually notice it till hours or even days later, and try not to worry about it if it doesn't look serious (i.e. a small red bump that's pink or red around the area with little to no pain). If I swe one on me, I flail and scream and freak out in all kinds of ways, I jump even if I saw one near me. In conclusion, I really dislike spiders and am terribly afraid of them >.<.
