OK Disclaimer: Haven't read Warrior Cats book since AVOS. All info I get is Second hand, LOL. But the villain of the new series, Splashtail, apparently back when he as a background character in TBC (I like the trend of how all the new protags of each arc are introduced as kits in the previous arc)
But most background apprentices don't switch mentors?
Softpelt died in TBC and Splashtail finished his training under Minnowtail.
Harelight was Softpelt's brother...
In b4 Softpelt ends up being Splashtail's "tragic backstory", Minnowtail is Splashtail's Thistleclaw, and Harelight turns out to have been retconned into a "mean brother" while Softpelt was still alive and mentoring Splashpaw XD.

Some people think Curlfeather shuold've been Splashtails mentor after Soft died... should we be talking about this? Did they plan this? Why am I so obsessed with this plot point? Anyone else wanna weigh in?

My first thought reading this was splashtail killed his mentor rather than tragic backstory. Either way, cool catch. I haven't seen anyone mention this yet

He was a pretty young apprentice when she died, so I don't know if he COULD pull it off even if she wanted to (since in warriors apprentices are tiny until they're like, twelve moons old and he wouldn't know that many fighting moves) but it's funny to see baby Splashtail being like that LOL

This is a really interesting fact that I wish was mentioned by Splashtail. It could work really well as part of his motivation: the Clans are so reliant on StarClan that they listen to an imposter and kill each other. It would make sense for Softpelt’s death to be a motivation for why Splashtail is so resentful of StarClan and the way the Clans function. It could also explain why he agrees to kill Reedwhisker. He has contempt for Mistystar, who led Softpelt into the battle allied with the imposter that left her dead, and he thinks that Mistystar’s son will be like her as leader.

What happened to Softpelt’s brother Dappletuft could also be part of Splashtail’s motivation. Dappletuft died trying to put a stop to Brashstar, and Mistystar publicly denounced his memory and denied him funereal rights, wanting to distance her Clan from codebreaking and win back StarClan’s favor.

That is really neat, I didn't think about Dappletuft.

This would be such a good part of Splashtail’s motivation. His mentor dying in a battle that was fought over StarClan’s favor, along with the decisions Mistystar had made over Dappletuft and the other “codebreakers” could be what caused him to lose faith in StarClan.
