Unpopular Opinion I guess but this series is already so wildly unrealistic about cats & they're so humanized to the point that it just makes me uncomfortable.
I might have felt differently about it if it was a common horror these cats had to experience and live with, but no, it conveniently happens to one character who's a medicine cat & probably wouldn't have ended up having kits anyways, while conveniently not happening to literally anyone else.
Firestar not getting it during his Rusty days makes sense, because he was so young but how can you explain ALL these long time Kittypets being able to procreate?
Jake - His owners just let him go make two litters randomly. Princess - Had kits but she was pretty young I guess. Sasha - A Kittypet for so long yet her owners didn't sterilize her & she got knocked up by Tigerstar. Millie - Born a Kittypet & a whole adult hopefully when she met Graystripe & then she had kits with him. Smoky - Barnboy keeps having TOO MANY BABIES! Hal - Had Raggedstar & Scorchwind with Featherstorm & Russerfur with Mrs. Unknown. Billystorm - Had kits with Leafstar. Smoke - A probable adult who conveniently wasn't sterilized so she could have Onestar's secret evil baby.
...and the list goes on. At this point they should've ignored that aspect completely.

I think it would be weird for a series about feral cats never touched the topic imo. Yeah poor Frostpaw and all that but it's fiction, the horror and unfairness is just good entertainment for a reader. Imo it took them way too long to actually fix a main character.

Y'know actually I've been thinking. If all of those cats are outdoor free roaming cats as they are...maybe it checks out that they aren't fixed actually the owners are already being irresponsible ):
As for whether it's bad to have it happen to a protag or not it's like...I dunno, yeah, they're cats and all, but I think it's entirely fair to be weirded out with how humanized they tend to be. And I really don't have faith in the series to handle how it approaches the subject to begin with. Maybe it will just end up being a vague one-off mention and won't be significant later on, but I find it hard not to feel a little dread about the idea of the series trying to tactfully approach the subject of the young female protag being unknowingly sterilized

I agree that with the level of humanization, the sterilization is pretty uncomfortable to read about.

Agreed tbh.
Also would add Graystripe to this list. If someone takes in a feral cat it gets recommended to get them neutered immediately but he is just allowed to do pretty much whatever during his time as a kittypet. When our formerly feral tom (was found as a kitten in the woods with his sister) started acting up by frequently marking the bathroom we got him neutered asap.
And yeah, the level of humanization these cats have does give the topic of neutering an uncomfortable undertone.

We have indoor cats (who get leash-walked) and people, even strangers, regularly tell us off for "abusing" our cats. Also, ethical guidelines here suggest not neutering cats until at least 6-8 months, so it makes sense that Rusty was intact. I'm actually for MORE instances of sterilisation, it would make living/interacting with Twolegs an actual logical threat. It was the literal threat that started this whole series. But I agree that as it is, it's pretty nonsensical. Graystripe should have been sterilized, it would have been a perfect opportunity. Id like to headcanon that he never actually ended up in a shelter, but rather one of the construction workers took him home, and thus never bothered to do it.

I agree, it doesn't really add much to the story, if Frostpaw wasn't a medicine cat then things would be different, but it's against the code for her to have kits anyway. I understand there might be some personal feelings involved regardless of the code, but it still stands it really doesn't add much to the plot from what I can see, if they wanted to have an impact, they should have gone with Sunbeam or Nightheart

I agree that with the level of humanization, the sterilization is pretty uncomfortable to read about. Yeah. The cats are pretty anthropomorphic, they're basically humans with four legs and fur. It does strike me as weird.
