Urban or rural county?
My brother-in-law worked the night shift for a rural county jail for the tail-end of his senior year of high school. From what he's said, it was mostly just drug addicts and town drunks.

From what he's said, it was mostly just drug addicts and town drunks. Mostly an Urban county, but we've still got a lot of Rural area. We also have inmates from surrounding counties, ICE detainees, people wanted by the FBI, and US Marshalls. On the downside though, we're also the largest (by number of beds), Mental Health Facility in the state, at least for adults.

I love threads like this. I knew someone who worked in a prison.
Is the jail you work at overcrowded? I know it’s a thing in the US, but it is not in my country. What’s the food like?

I love threads like this. I knew someone who worked in a prison. Is the jail you work at overcrowded? I know it’s a thing in the US, but it is not in my country. What’s the food like? Firstly, this is Jail. This is pre-sentencing, and as such: Innocent until proven Guilty. There are a few individuals that are awaiting to go to prison, but I treat them no differently. We're all humans, and everybody makes mistakes. Secondly, no the jail I work at is nowhere near overcrowded. We actually have several housing units closed because we don't have the inmates to fill them. Each housing unit can hold the following: Restrictive Housing: 48 inmates (3 Housing Units) General Housing: 94 inmates (In-cell) or 114, with 20 being on what we refer to as "Boats", or Portable Bunks (15 units) Mental Health: 74 (1 unit) Mental Health Restrictive Housing and Suicide Watch: 26 (1 unit) Open Bay Dorm: 78 (2 units) Open Dorm: 120 (3 units) Medical: 19 (2 units) Special Housing Unit (Extra Medical): 16 (1 unit) On top of other various holding cells spread around the facility

Are there any common stereotypes in movies and shows that aren't true? Depends on the style of jail. Firstly, the one I work at is a Direct Supervision style, meaning the inmates are actively out and about during the day, and not stuck in their cells (unless required for safety/security, or as a punishment (not to exceed 23 consecutive hours, unless they refuse rec-time)). Secondly, some jails allow the officers to carry weapons while working in the housing units. The one I work at does not, unless under special circumstances. These weapons include Tasers, OC (Oleo-Resin Capsaicin) spray (Pepper Spray) and cuffs. Thirdly, Escape is no-where near as easy as movies tend to portray. Most jails, including mine, have the major doors controlled by employees that are off-site. There are keys that can lead outside, in the case that power is completely shut off, but not a single individual carries all the keys. Fourth, violence, especially violence that leads to death, is uncommon. If you are arrested at any point in your life, I have some advice. Do EXACTLY, what the D/O or C/O tells you to do when they say to do it, unless it is illegal, immoral, or unethical (IE: Anything that would violate PREA or put yourself or anyone else in danger of physical harm.) The employees are there for your safety more than anything else. If we do not have your trust to keep you safe, we cannot do so effectively. My second piece of advice: Never incur a debt to another inmate. Do not ask another inmate for jackshit. Do not borrow, steal, loan, give, or take anything to/from another inmate. They always expect something in return. They are not your friends, and you will probably forget about them once you're out. Fifth: Some, not all jails, are not dark and gloomy. The one I work at has a lot of natural light in the living areas. This helps with the mental health of the inmates. The food at my jail is pretty decent, and I'll occasionally eat a tray with the inmates as it helps build a bond that they understand I am not that different from them, other than the clothes I wear and the Employment I have. I like to have fun with the inmates as well. I'll occasionally give the pod a challenge, like whoever can do the most push-ups without stopping, gets a hot-pocket.

What do you think is the hardest part about working at the jail? (Mentally, physically...) Mentally, the hardest part is seeing the inmates that can't deal with it, and they go crazy from seeing the same 4 walls for about a year. Physically, the hardest thing I've had to deal with is the amount of walking. I don't have to respond to fights very often, and when I do, they generally stop once they see 15 dudes pull out pepper spray and tasers and aim at them

Do you ever regret going into this job field? Or does the good outweigh the bad? The only thing I don't like about the job are my days off, but I really enjoy the job. I've had a lot of (prior) inmates see me outside, and thank me for helping them when they were in a bad spot, mentally

What sorts of things are needed for qualification for your job, and also, out of those things, what are the ones most people wouldn’t expect you need to do/be for your job? (Sorry abt phrasing I didn’t do well on that-) Has anyone in there managed to hurt you badly, physically or emotionally? What’s the weirdest part and the funniest part about your job?

For my job, to get hired, you have to at least have a High School Diploma, pass a physical, and pass a drug test. In order to pass through the training, you have to memorize basically 400 policies/procedures, you have to be able to effectively communicate, and learn and demonstrate that you can defend yourself, without weapons, against people who may have a weapon. The weirdest part of the job? Honestly, there's not really a whole lot. It's pretty straight forward. As for the funniest part, personally, it's when the inmates think we go on their schedule.

OC is less effective on individuals of darker skin, and rarely, there are people who are basically immune to it's effects. The latter tends to be those who have severe mental health issues, or on some sort of drug that inhibits their pain receptors

I honestly don't know the exact science behind it, but I mean more of like effects of it being on their skin. It tends to cause a reaction like a really bad sunburn, especially on people of lighter skin color, minus the skin peeling.

Which part? I can say, since I've experienced both, OC is SO MUCH WORSE than CS Gas (Tear gas). It's effects can last for several days, while CS is gone in less than 2 hours.
