I saw a mink the other day, and it took me a while to figure out what the heck it was because I’ve never seen one before. So, what are some wild animals that you seen that you thought were interesting or unique or cool?

It's kind of interesting to me how an animal that can be so common in one person's area can be a rarity in another. I watch a YouTuber who lives on Svalbard. She recently made a video about visiting mainland Norway and got super excited when there was a squirrel outside the cabin. I'm so used to squirrels that I forgot that they must seem like a cool rarity if you usually live above the arctic tree line.
We have a lot of critters around here. Gray foxes, coyotes, deer, raccoons, possums, owls... my favorite though is a bobcat who lives nearby, sometimes we see her crossing the road at night (we live next to a greenbelt).

Buffalo once. They were a ways off in the distance but even then good lord were they huge. I had assumed them to be just slightly bigger than cows but its more like 2-3x the size of a cow.
There's also been a black headed vulture around here a couple of times that I've seen eating things that got hit by cars since I'm by the highway where I'm at now.
At the other apartment we were by a "lake" (more of a glorified pond you could fish in really.) and saw a blue heron during migration. That was the one that really caught me off guard that I had to look up because i hadn't seen one before or since.
Aside from that, squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, coyotes, foxes, deer, lotta various birds, raccoons, possums, skunks, are all fairly common. I know there are bobcats because other people have said they've seen them but I literally never have in my entire almost 26 years of being alive and living in roughly the same area and at this point I gotta wonder if any of them actually saw a bobcat or just some stray cat at night with no tail lmao.

Nothing too exciting I once saw a Roadrunner in a plaza. I was like "Wait I thought these only lived in deserts." Then I remembered Southern California is a desert. I've also seen coyotes, squirrels and rabbits. I've never seen a skunk but I've sure smelt them.

I’ve noticed most american forumers seem to live out west. I’ve only been west once but the coolest animals I saw then was probably a desert tortoise and tarantula hawk wasps. Seeing the tortoise was really cool because they are so rare. The wasps are not so rare but I just like them because they are so giant and pretty. I really wanted to see one of those giant centipedes or millipedes cause those don’t really exist on the east side of the country but I didn’t. Saw a ton of lizards too which also aren’t that common where I live. I actually haven’t seen a single lizard where I live. There are lots of cool unique animals the more west you go.

sometimes white-tailed deer will come into the yard and nibble on the plants
also if you go out around the lakes in the spring and summer there's a chance you'll hear loon calls. i know a lot of people think they're creepy but i personally find them beautiful.

I love loons! That is awesome you get to hear them once in a while. I’ve only seen them, never heard them call.

I used to live in a fairly new neighborhood that didn’t have much wildlife. Now I live on a few acres and have seen gray and red squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, deer, coyotes, red and gray foxes, bobcats, groundhogs, minks, skunks, opossums, raccoons, and at least 55 bird species on the property.
I have also seen 631 species of wild birds to date across three continents (North America, Australia, and Europe). One of the most notable is the Little Penguin (also known as Fairy Penguin or Little Blue Penguin), because being able to say you’ve seen a wild penguin is cool! Some other ones that stand out to me include: nesting Laysan Albatrosses, Kauai Elepaio (only native Hawaiian songbird I’ve seen), American Dipper (North America’s only aquatic songbird), several cool Australian birds that are common so probably not super exciting if you live there (Laughing Kookaburra, Rainbow Lorikeet, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, etc.), several birds that are quite rare in the U.S. (Black-capped Gnatcatcher, Little Egret, Blue-throated Mountain-gem, Northern Jacana, Rose-throated Becard, Berylline Hummingbird, Tufted Duck), the endangered Whooping Crane, the endangered Lesser Prairie-Chicken, and the Greater Flamingo. I’ve also seen plenty of other locally or seasonally rare ones, but there are too many of those to list.

One did show up in my state last spring though, as they do have a bit of a tendency to wander, and I did get to see it!
