disregarding that they're expensive, dangerous, or would be invasive species; what are some animals that are illegal in your state/country that'd you def own if you could?
I'm in California and sugar gliders, hedgehogs and gerbils are illegal here , but if I could I would def own them

Honestly I’d love an axolotl if I knew I could take care of one aside from the fact they’re illegal to keep where I live.

i am learning that other states’ illegal pet laws are much stricter than mine. leopard geckos?? ducks?? ferrets??? all of these are common-ish pets here so this is wild to me.

I want to own a duck. Right now. They are illegal In Massachusetts and I’m pretty sure most of not all states because they are migratory birds, but I just love them. The highlight of my day is going down to the pond that’s behind my house to walk my dog and seeing the ducks. This is not the case in most locations in the US. You can have domestic ducks, though they are often considered livestock so you may not be able to have them within city limits depending on local ordinances and zoning laws. Wild ducks are banned, as are basically all native birds (under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act), but that law doesn’t apply to domestics or non-native species. I don’t live in Massachusetts, but domestic ducks should be fine there based on this website: www.mass.gov/guides/wildlife-as-pets. Also note that Mallards are the most common wild duck, but there are also domestic types of Mallards (most domestic ducks are actually descended from them, but some look somewhat like the wild ones and others really don’t). For Mallards, the domestic types are fine but the wild ones aren’t.

My grandpa had a pet duck here though, but I’m not sure if he had the permit for him.

As someone who knows quite a bit about fish (though I'm not a expert by any means), that's probably actually a good thing. Fish are very high maintenance, especially goldfish. (They can grow to be quite big and poop ALOT, and can't handle their water being dirty for very long.)

Saint Ambrosef this, it sucks that many pet store workers who are actually passionate in help others properly caring for their new animals are literally fired or have to sell such awful products simply because they're required too. very sad to see so many people buy horrible cages, inadequate enrichment and diet simply because they were told these animals are "easy" or buy into what the workers say cuz they assume they already are "pros" at this

An Eastern Box Turtle. They're a protected species in my state, but my God are they just so cute???
There's ways around it, such as adoption for those that can't be re-released for various reasons though

I want a pet spitting cobra. If anyone asks, I'll give them the option to pet it. Don't worry, they're friendly.

It's understandable. Seeing how many people will discard their domestics, and they breed with the wild waterfowl

Fennec foxes. They actually were legal with an exotic pet license for a while, but they changed it and banned a lot of species that are invasive or considered non-domesticated.
Its really sad because it's been a forever dream to have one and I've done extensive care research and had even found a vet & wildlife rehab with experience caring for foxes and me n my roommate were talking about the possibility of making it happen once the cats pass on, since they're very elderly and we wouldn't want to stress them out by bringing an entirely different and incredibly hyperactive species into the mix in what is probably their twilight years where they'd rather chill and be cuddled.

i googled what pets were legal in sweden bc i honestly had no idea, all predators are illegal to be kept here except for cats, dogs, tame ferrets and, for some reason, badgers. i've not heard of a single person keeping a badger as a pet here or elsewhere, but apparantly it's a possibility!

Probably a Barn Owl or an American Crow. Most wild U.S Native birds are illegal to be owned as pets, but crows are fantastic companions and I adore owls.
