For the January Prompt that Mintedstar posted
It didn’t at first register to him that things were different, that the darkness that sat outside the window of the shack he called a home was different. Living out in the woods it often was darker then it normally would be at this hour, so he was chalking it up to it still being night, having only one eye didn’t help much matters in trying to access the situation. He drew the mask across his face, it resembled more of an eye patch if it wasn’t for the leaf and stem design of it. He gave a slight experiment running his hand through the darkness but apart from normal shadows and darkness that often would at least curl around his fingers, registering his kind, his hand just made a simple cut motion through it.

Giving a sigh he moved, if anyone had an idea of what happened would probably be the bookworm of a person he had the (mis)fortune of calling his partner. He pushed open the door, giving a soft frown, dew touching the bottom of his feet, sending a quick jolt through his system as he shot backwards to get away from the wet substance. A frown set to his features as he gazed at the ground. He glanced out to the woods, the frown changing to a troubled look on his face, birds gave off chirps but not taking flight, just as confused about why the sun wasn’t bringing out it’s rays for them to begin their hunts of bugs and other small prey.
Running a hand through his hair he quickly put his shoes on and set off into the woods, a quiver of arrows on his back as he notched an arrow to the string of the bow he wielded, he could hear some howls of wolves, which further set him on edge. Navigating the darkness of the woods was a struggle, but soon the vague glow of the small town that resided beside the woods was starting to peek through the blackness. But it almost was like a black hole as the darkness seemed to be focused on extinguishing the glow of the town.
He slowly made his way through the streets, his guard raising as the quiet grew more and more. Residents weren’t out and about moving, the only signs of life were the various street lamps, but the darkness seemed to swarm it like moths to a flame. A low growl sounded behind him, quickly turning and drawing further back, he narrowed his eye trying to see through the darkness, hoping to at least see the eyes of what made the noise, but it seemed impossible, till suddenly an amoux was leaping out at him, the arrow barely having enough time to fly before striking the creature and bringing it down.
The man released a sigh, his hand gripping tightly to the bow in it, the knuckles white, as he simply brought his free hand back to the quiver and pulled out a new arrow, lodging it to the string and pressed onward. Trying his hardest to put his focus more to his surroundings and less to where he was headed, and became more aware of the noises that spread through out the town, other amoux moving about eagerly to find what soul decided to venture from the safety of homes to the dark streets.
The man jumped at a hand placed on his shoulder, spinning round he came face to face with someone he much rather not see. The dark mass of shadows stared at him, it’s horns sitting on it’s head as it tilted to the side.
“Yea, I think I know the danger I’m in,” he hissed to the creature. But it continued it’s stare, never answering as always, just remaining silent, occasionally it’s gaze wavered at a noise, before it simply turned and faded off into the darkness.
Leaving the man alone once again, in the dark, the only source of comfort coming from the glow of the street lamp. With a swallow and a shaky breath, he turned and headed off, but once finally reaching his destination, the door to the building he wanted to get into was locked, and no amount of banging seemed to wake the occupant within to give him entry. Not a single sound even stirred from the confines of the building.
“Lazy idiot,” the man muttered beneath his breath, resting his forehead against the glass, his eye narrowed, trying to work out what to do. Who was he supposed to turn to if no one seemed to be around?
Pushing away from the door, he dislodged the arrow and put it back to the safety of the quiver on his back, he walked away, once again letting his hand lift out into the shadows, and unlike in his shack, the shadows here curled around his fingers, registering his presence, a light smile drew to his face, at least in the town with it’s lights he had a far better chance to fight the amoux then relying on his bow. With that he headed off eager to meet what the darkness might bring.
