Ghostscreech dug his claws into the ground as Lightningstar spoke, his fur bristling at the idea of the Dark Forest growing in strength. He had only ever heard the stories of it from the elder’s and a few from his mother.
Sunthroat watched Lightningstar carefully, noticing how tired his old friend looked. He flicked his ear, deciding that he should talk to the leader in the morning.
Laceheart’s fur bristled and wrapped her tail around her swollen belly. She didn’t want her kits growing up in fear of the Dark Forest.
Owlfrost growled and lashed his tail, his eyes narrowing in anger, “It seems like the Dark Forest will never leave us in peace.” He snarled, fur bristling along his spine. His claws dug into the ground, remembering the stories he had heard about his father and mother.

Snowdrop had lifted from her place at Silentflare’s side to listen to Lightningstar’s announcement. Her tail flicked as worry filled her. If Shadeclaw had been influenced, why had the Dark Forest not targeted her? She wanted to know what to say to ease her father’s heart, but it was clear that Yarrowcloud’s death had hurt something deep within him. She flicked her gaze to the side, wondering if any of her clanmates had been seeing the Dark Forest.

Lightningstar nodded to his clan. “Thank you.” He spoke. “I will speak to Ghostscreech and Peachdapple in the morning about the patrol.” He spoke. “For now we will mourn Yarrowcloud and sit vigil for him.” He spoke. “I pray he finds his way to starclan, there is no cat who deserved starclan rest more.” He spoke before jumping down and moving to sit by his former apprentices body.

Silentflare looked at his daughter a long moment. “I’m going to step from camp a moment.” He murmured. “I need some air.” The black Tom moving to head towards the entrance, ears and tail down.
Stormeye had been watching the meeting, quiet as usual. He shook his head with a sigh. He had heard stories of the dark forest but never expected them to be a threat again.

Peachdapple watched Silentflare go with a pang in her heart, wishing she could ease the guilt she knew that he felt. She hoped that she could provide him some comfort, in the short moons she knew she had left. She didn’t want to think about the dreams that plagued her though, instead waiting for Lightningstar to approach Yarrowcloud’s body before she mewed softly to her leader.
“I know he told you, in his own way. That he expected this outcome, that he was going to…” She trailed off, before she rasped. “You meant everything to him, Lightningstar. He wanted Wrenflight to never hurt you again, or Thunderclan. I never thanked you, for what you did for him, all those moons…”
Snowdrop noticed Stormeye sitting a few paces away. She had often found herself calmed in his presence, and she wanted to confide in at least someone. She nodded sadly as she watched her father slip away from Yarrowcloud’s body, and she mewed softly as she approached Stormeye. “It’s dreadful… everything happening at once. I’m sorry, I just… don’t want to be alone right now.”

Forestblaze joined the vigil again once Lightningstar finished the meeting and settled down next to his uncle’s body, ready to spend the rest of the night to mourn Yarrowcloud.
Ghostscreech briefly pressed his nose against Yarrowcloud’s fur before stepping back to let the others pay their respects as well.
Hollowpaw lifted her head briefly when she sensed movement around her now that the meeting was over, giving another flick of her ear before resting her head back on her paws. She had already ignored Viperfang when he had insisted on her going back to the medicine den, and she certainly wasn’t planning on leaving anytime soon.

Frostmoon watched Forestblaze for a moment, her heart aching for her friend. She padded forwards to press her muzzle gently, and a bit awkwardly, to Yarrowcloud’s pelt.
“Thank you, for your kindness, and your wonderful stories. You made everything all the less lonely.” She murmured, speaking from her heart, before she shuffled back, a bit flustered at showing such tenderness in front of everyone. She looked quickly at Ghostscreech as he paid his respects, and she felt her eyes avert sadly. She turned, brushing her muzzle lightly to Forestblaze’s side in another awkward motion, before she quickly fled to give everyone their space.
Hornetstrike watched Frostmoon from his spot, sitting for the vigil. He flicked his ears, having noticed the odd tension between her and Ghostcreech. He sighed softly. The poor, poor tom.

Forestblaze looked up at Frostmoon when she brushed past him, giving her a grateful flick of his ear. He watched as she left, wishing that she would stay with him longer.
Ghostscreech felt his chest ache as he watched Frostmoon comfort Forestblaze briefly before leaving herself, looking away from the scene. Perhaps it really was selfish of him to want her by his side as his mate. It was obvious that Forestblaze liked her as well, and she wouldn’t have to worry about the stress of being a leader’s mate if she chose to be with the younger warrior. Ghostscreech stood from where he had been sitting and padded towards the camp entrance, he needed to get out of camp for awhile and clear his head. He pushed through the gorse tunnel silently and climbed to the top of the ravine, not wanting to stray too far from the camp.

Hornetstrike watched after the deputy for a second, before he finally resolved himself and stood to his paws. He mewed lightly to Slatesight. “I’m going to talk with Ghostscreech for a few moments. The complex feelings kind of talk, I’ll be back soon, okay?” He mewed knowingly, before slipping out after the younger tom.

Ghostscreech came to a halt at the top of the ravine and sat down at the edge, his gaze resting on the camp below him and wrapped his tail over his paws, letting his mind wander as he thought over everything that had happened that day. It felt like moons since the training session this morning, and sitting through the Gathering had felt like torture while he was still reeling from the sharp words and rejection from Frostmoon. He couldn’t help but feel as if something big was coming ThunderClan’s way, and he couldn’t help but wrack his brain for anything that would keep his clan safe from harm. He found himself missing the peacefulness they had enjoyed before the fire and wishing they could return to that time.
He tensed slightly when he heard movement, but relaxed when he saw that it was only Hornetstrike. Ghostscreech gave him a flick of his ear in greeting before turning his attention back to the camp, “I thought you were sitting vigil for Yarrowcloud.” He said quietly.

He approached the deputy with a flick of his tail, looking down across camp before he admitted. “It’s not my business, but I do happen to be a pretty attentive father. I know when Frostmoon gets herself into a mess. I’m guessing she’s gotten you into a mess to, hm?” He inquired, not accusing at all, simply concerned for his sake.

Ghostscreech blinked at him in light surprise before giving a small shake of his head, “No.. no, nothing like that.” He murmured, his ear flicking uncertainly. It would make sense Hornetstrike would pick up on the tension between the two of them, he had always been rather close with his daughter. “We had different views over something, that’s all.” Ghostscreech had promised Frostmoon that he wouldn’t bring his feelings for her up again, and he didn’t think the independent she-cat would appreciate it if her father came to her about it. He could still feel the sting of her words, of how she felt that he would use her to his own advantage.
“I think it would just be best if I leave her be and stay out of her way for now though. We didn’t exactly end our last conversation on good terms.” Ghostscreech said with a sigh. His ears tilted slightly when he felt that same ache in his chest at the thought of the possibility of letting his feelings for Frostmoon go. It seemed like an impossible task for him, and he wasn’t sure if he would be able to if things came down to it.

Hornetstrike was silent for a long moment before he gave the deputy the most empathetic look a cat could give. He shook his head lightly, the beginnings of laughter rolling out of his muzzle. “Oh… I’m not laughing at you, I promise. I’m just. Ah. Imagining what your conflict would have been. If I know my daughter well enough, I’m assuming she made a completely farfetched assumption about you that is obviously not true, all in an effort to get you to believe that she isn’t worthy enough for whatever opinion you may have of her.” Hornetstrike lifted a paw to groom his ear, shaking his head with a knowing look. “I’ll let you in on a secret about Frostmoon. She is her mother’s daughter, from the blue in her eyes to the absolute mess she becomes when faced with the ever so horrifying, terrifying concept offfff feelings. Of any kind. And Starclan, have I known you two had many feelings for eachother for a very long time.” He quieted a bit, voice light now. “Did you have the conversation? The feelings one?” He assumed.

Ghostscreech gave Hornetstrike a startled look when the older warrior started laughing, not expecting this kind of reaction. “I-… um, that… that obvious, huh?” He said, feeling a bit flustered. Ghostscreech flicked his ear rapidly as he felt his fur warming up and gave a small nod of his head, looking back at the camp, “Yes, we did, just before the Gathering. And as you can already tell, it didn’t go well.” He said, taking a deep breath to calm himself back down. He knew that Frostmoon had doubts about herself before, but he didn’t think that she would ever consider herself unworthy of him. Ghostscreech had felt himself drawn to her ever since he had overseen her warrior assessment, and had always considered her to be a strong and capable she-cat. He just wished he could show Frostmoon that she was more than enough for him, that he couldn’t imagine anyone else by his side.
“I… I love her. Deeply. And I didn’t realize how deep my feelings went until today when I saw her pulling Hollowpaw out of the river. And then again when I saw how close she was with Forestblaze, even though I know she only considers him as a friend.” Ghostscreech said, looking down at his paws. He wasn’t blind. He knew Forestblaze was interested in Frostmoon, and he had caught the look of triumph on the younger warrior had given him while he was talking to her when they had returned from training. “Frostmoon believes that because of my path as ThunderClan’s next leader that I deserve a mate that is better than her in every way, but I don’t want a perfect mate. What does it matter who my mate is in the long run?”

Slatesight watched Hornetstrike leave with a nod. This was certainly none of his business. He turned his attention to Yarrowcloud's vigil, finding it odd that he was observing as a warrior and not helping Peachdapple lay him to rest. He wished he could help, but Aspenfall filled his pawsteps and more.
"... Will you be all right?" Aspenfall asked Peachdapple quietly. "I know you will be safe with Lightningstar and Ghostscreech, but..." he trailed off, thinking of her emotional state. He had never seen his mentor grieve so openly for a lost Clanmate.
Nighteye sat with his paws and tail wrapped closely around him, eyes closed and ears flattened. There was nothing to do but sit in mourning.
Magpiewing and Plumfur quietly sat in the vigil.

Bluewhisker padded towards where Yarrowcloud's body lay, bending her head to gently touch her nose to the dead elder's ear. She closed her eyes, standing in silence for a moment as she thought of the old cat, a solid pillar in the forest, and all of her memories of him.
"Thank you for your life. ThunderClan is lucky to have had you," she said quietly, her voice rumbling in her chest. She then stepped back, padding away towards the warriors' den.

Starclan above, I’ll be growing grey hairs by the end of the moon at this rate. Ghostscreech, I need you to know right now that the kind of love you hold for her… it’s not going to be easy. Not one bit. But, I can assure you that what you feel for her, she feels for you. I can tell by how hard she’s trying to deny it.” He blinked for a moment, before he looked at the deputy. “Whiteblaze is a brilliant, beautiful, protective, and dedicated cat. She’s the love of my life. But, she suffered greatly from being pregnant, and kitting. I didn’t understand what it was until Peachdapple explained to me that some queens just can’t connect with their kits, even if they love them. By no means am I saying Whiteblaze was a bad mother, she did the best she could when her body and her mind were both against her… but this meant that for most of Frostmoon’s kithood, she learned to be fiercely independent very early on. She had no siblings, and I oversaw all of her social skills… as best as I could. Frostmoon always took after her mother. They love fiercely, but they just can’t express it the way most cats do.” He paused, before continuing. “Which means, you need to work harder to understand the way she expresses it, because you’ll never be able to tell if you don’t. Your relationship isn’t my business, you know. I’d never tell Frostmoon what you’ve told me in confidence. So! No worries there. But, I will tell you, Frostmoon’s greatest foe will always be herself. And there are ways for you to fight that with her, if you’re willing to be more stubborn than she is.” He humored.

However long she had left, Thunderclan needed her to be strong. She tensed as her wounds finally began to sting, and she admitted. “I need to get treated before I go on any trek. The wounds slipped my mind… will you assist me?”

Midnightstream looked ready to argue with her mate, but the worry in his eyes was enough to motivate her to nod without a fight. She had been feeling a bit off the past two days, and she hoped it wasn’t illness. The last thing she needed was to get sick by the rain. “Don’t stay out too long yourself either… the rain will make the burial a bit harder, so… if you help, just take it easily.” She murmured, touching her muzzle to his ear, before pulling to her paws. “Flurrypaw, Drizzlepaw.” Featherfoot rasped, nosing his kits up. “You’ve had a long night… I don’t want you getting soaked and cold. Get some rest.” “Okay…” Drizzlepaw sniffled, dragging to her paws and hobbling off miserably to the apprentice’s den. Flurrypaw was stubborn at first, but soon followed after his sister with fallen ears.

I have faith that Starclan will find us a way, and I’ll be attentive to every sign or vision I can get.” She looked at Lightningstar with a softer gaze now. “And Yarrowcloud saw you like a father. You did more for him than anyone else could have. He would have done far more than this for far less if it meant keeping Wrenflight away from you… he and I are sure that all that has happened stemmed from your leadership. Because Wrenflight is bitter and selfish.” She spat, venom in her voice for her father. Snowdrop offered Stormeye a light smile, sad but assuring. “It’s okay… well, not okay, maybe, but… I’m okay. My father blames himself, and I know that he and my uncle had a complicated relationship, but… I wish I could make my father feel better, you know?” She sat next to the tom. “I think I just want some company. Lightningstar nodded slightly as he listened. “I always knew Wrenflight was a hateful cat. So when you were given my brother for an apprentice as a much younger Warrior, it meant you could be considered for deputy. That was why he neglected me, but outright despised Yarrowcloud. Duskstar did many things wrong in her life, but one thing she did right was choosing you to be our next leader… and stepping aside to let you lead us through the darkest moons we’ve ever known.” Peachdapple explained lightly, remembering the day she had watched Lightningstar return from the Moonstone, how he radiated with the energy of nine lives. Her heart ached. She could sense how many he had left, and wondered how time could have swept by so fast since she could count nine lives within him. She opened her jaws, wanting to admit that her days were short, but after losing Yarrowcloud, she knew she couldn’t pile that onto him. Not yet… So she closed her jaws, merely exhaling through her nose. “Yes. You’d understand, wouldn’t you?” Snowdrop mewed, empathy in her voice as she thought of the hardships he probably went through with the former medicine cat as his father. She smiled faintly. “That’s probably the best thing to do. My father’s always worked best when he’s had time to gather himself first. I just… hope he knows that I’m always here. Sometimes I think he’s afraid I’ll one day be gone too, like Shadeclaw, Cometblaze… Glassflower. But. I won’t go anywhere.”

Darktail pressed against Midnightstream before acknowledging what she said with a nod. "I'll be careful, but you know I have to keep an eye on my mother. She can't do this alone. Now go get dry in our nest, I'll join you once the burial is finished."
Blizzardstorm waved to Flurrypaw as the apprentice went to his nest. "You can sleep in tomorrow Flurrypaw, we'll train after sunhigh if you're up for it. Get some rest."
Seafoam hovered near the back of the vigil crowd, the old she-cat looked worried as she shivered in the cool rain. She didn't want to leave the vigil for her den-mate.
Brackenheart ushered Stumppaw into the apprentice's den with a lick on the top of his daughter's head, Stumppaw complaining the whole way.
Flamesky nudged Brokenwing, anxiety radiating off the tom, "We should get out of the rain, this can't be good for you and the kits."

“I’ll wait for you.” Midnightstream promised with a small and assuring look, before she licked his ears a few times, and then turned to make her way to the Warrior’s den.
“Thank you, Blizzardstorm. I’ll be ready for training tomorrow, I promise… Yarrowcloud would have wanted me to. He always said how lucky I am to have you as my mentor. And I think he was right!” Flurrypaw mewed, voice hoarse with sadness, but his words honest and kind. He stood in the entrance of the apprentice’s den, before slipping inside.

Ghostscreech shifted as Hornetstrike spoke, looking to the sky as it darkened with rain clouds. “I know she feels the same for me, she admitted that much to me… well, kind of. The conversation pretty much went downhill after I told her how I felt about her.” He said, flicking his ear as he felt a couple of raindrops hit him. Ghostscreech hesitated for a moment before he continued, looking back at Hornetstrike, “She, uh… she asked me how she doesn’t know that I only want her as my mate so I can have someone to just smile and nod at the decisions I make. I know she didn’t truly mean the things she said… but it still hurt to hear it. I told her that I didn’t want that, but… I don’t know. I don’t want to upset her anymore than I already have. I hated seeing her so distressed and panicked. And… and if being a leader’s mate is what causes her stress and heartache, then I don’t want put her through that. I’d rather see her happy and carefree over being burdened with that responsibility.” Ghostscreech said with a shake of his head, looking at the sky again as the rain started to get heavier and stood back up, “We should head back to camp before this rain gets any worse. Um.. thank you, Hornetstrike. It helped talking to you about this.” He added, looking at the older warrior gratefully.

Berryfrost pressed her muzzle against Yarrowcloud’s fur, murmuring a soft goodbye to him. She looked at the sky as it started raining before looking at the camp entrance, worried that Silentflare hadn’t returned yet. She flicked her ear, wondering if she should go look for him.
Hollowpaw flicked her ear as the rain started falling but still didn’t move from her spot next to Yarrowcloud, not even caring as her fur got soaked once again.
Viperfang stood up as the rain started to get heavier and moved over to Hollowpaw, nudging her gently with his nose. “Come on, little one. This rain won’t be good for you.” He murmured to her quietly.
Hollowpaw gave a sharp shake of her head and curled up into a tighter ball, pressing firmly against Yarrowcloud. She didn’t want to leave and go somewhere dry, she didn’t deserve it.
Viperfang flicked his ear in worry for his daughter, having never seen her react in this way. She had always been rather close to the elder, so it would make sense that she would take his passing rather hard. He nudged her again, trying to get her onto her paws.
Brokenwing flicked her ear, loooking at the sky as the rain fell. “I… I suppose you’re right.” She mewed, voice breaking as she reluctantly stood up, her legs feeling stiff. Brokenwing pressed her nose agains Yarrowcloud’s fur one last time before she headed back to the nursery.
Sootpaw hurried back to the apprentice’s den after paying his respects to Yarrowcloud, shaking the drops of water off his pelt before curling up in his nest, feeling exhausted.
Orangebreeze pressed her side against Featherfoot, looking at her mate sadly, “I’m so sorry, Featherfoot. Yarrowcloud didn’t deserve this.” She mewed quietly to him. She ignored the rain, not wanting to leave him or the vigil.

Lightningstar listened to Peachdapple’s story, eyes clouded in thought. “Yes I suppose that would make sense then.” He let out a short sigh. “I just hope I have the strength to lead us through these dark times.” He knew he was nearing the end of his leadership. He watched Yarrowcloud’s unmoving body, wishing it was all a cruel joke.
Silentflare sat just outside of camp, head bowed as he let the rain soak him. He was trying to sort through his feelings and thoughts but everything was a jumbled mess. Guilt ate at him, making it almost hard to breathe.
Stormeye nodded slightly. “I’m sorry about your siblings..” he trailed off. “I know it must be hard.” He pressed his shoulder to hers slightly, wanting to give her some comfort.
