Chapter Seventeen: Nightgaze eyes were locked on her littermates awkwardly. She felt like the third wheel, just an accessory to a pair. She wasn’t supposed to feel that way. Melodypaw and Fogpaw were the cats she could trust the most, so why did she suddenly feel excluded by them? Excluded wasn’t the way to describe it actually, because her siblings weren’t leaving her out intentionally. It was more of her fault, her fault for taking the job of a medicine cat when she didn’t truthfully qualify for it. Her fault for being the odd one out.
Your fault. Those two words echoed through her mind, as if the little voice in her head was taunting her. But the voice seemed to be correct. Fogpaw’s ceremony would have never been delayed if she hadn’t been almost torn to shreds by Sweetfang. All because Sweetfang hated her for being selected as a medicine cat apprentice and she hadn’t. She hadn’t even known that was the reason until today. She had cluelessly been being taunted by Sweetfang since the day she was apprenticed without knowing why, yet her best friend Tansypaw knew the answer.
Yet all her problems outside of who her parents truthfully were seemed to come back to her job as medicine cat. Nightgaze always loved her role, aiding her clanmates when they needed help the most. Sure, she had her doubts about her qualification, but that didn’t stop her from enjoying it.
Now she wasn’t so sure. If Cardinalflight had chosen Sweetfang, maybe she would have done better.
I’m mouse-brained and naive, Nightgaze thought, Maybe I should be more like Melodypaw, facing the truth and trying to solve everything skeptical in my way.
Fogpaw and Melodypaw then exited the medicine den, leaving no one else but the sleeping body of Duststar, Cardinalflight, and Nightgaze under the vine structured shelter.
“I’m sorry,” Nightgaze muttered, not daring to look her mentor in the eye, “I haven’t been able to properly apologize for all the chaos I’ve caused. You let me have a break and I decide to indirectly get three cats wounded.”
Cardinalflight didn’t speak for a second. “You are funny, Nightgaze.” She eventually mewed.
“What do you mean?” Nightgaze asked, genuinely confused.
“You are funny.,” Cardinalflight repeated, “You say sorry for things you have no control over. Just last leaf-bare you said sorry for the greencough outbreak, as if you had anything to do with several cats getting sick. You say sorry for not finding the herbs that I asked you to scout out, even though you can’t magically make herbs grow in PetalClan territory.” She paused for a second, “Not everything unfortunate that happens is your fault.”
“But this time it is. If I hadn’t gotten Sweetfang upset because I—“ Then suddenly she realized she was going to say too much. She was going to accidentally admit how mad Sweetfang was at her just because she happened to be a medicine cat instead of her.
Cardinalflight sighed. “I think I know why Sweetfang is always giving you a hard time, and I think you know too. But I’m not going to get into it. Let’s just move on from that, okay?”
Nightgaze nodded. “Have you ate? I’m pretty sure Sunflowerpaw and Shellpaw just got back from hunting with their mentors. I could grab you something,” she said, changing the subject.
“I could have some prey, but I think I can grab it from the pile myself,” her mentor replied, “Keep an eye on Duststar.”
As Cardinalflight left the den, Nightgaze was left staring at her motionless leader. When will she wake up? Nightgaze asked herself, Soon, right? It had been a whole day now. Duststar was breathing, but she was knocked out cold.
Nightgaze approached her leader. It was odd seeing the strong she-cat so helpless, considering she was the one who ruled the clan so bravely. She started to lick Duststar’s fur the wrong way to keep her warm, which felt even more awkward.
But she couldn’t experience the strange moment for long before fog seemed to cover Nightgaze’s vision and her mind drifted to something else.
In front of Nightgaze’s eyes was a young looking she-cat, even younger than Nighgaze. Both of her right paws had two dark brown stripes running right above them while the rest of her pelt was a cinnamon color. Her left side of her face had a spot over it, the same color as her stripes. Stars glimmered in her fur.
“H-Hello?” Nightgaze said hesitantly. What had happened? She could see camp behind her, but just barely. It looked clouded. The only thing she could see clearly was the brown cat.
“One.” The she-cat said firmly.
“Huh?” Nightgaze mumbled.
“One!” The she-cat repeated, this time in a slight hiss.
“I can’t understand you. Please say more.”
“One.” The she-cat stepped forward towards Nightgaze, so close that she could feel the starlit cat’s breath on her fur. The she-cat then lifted one of her paws and placed it right on her heart. “One,” she repeated.
One, Nightgaze thought. Then she understood. One life! Duststar has one life left and this she-cat is from StarClan. She’s trying to tell me—
Her thoughts were interrupted by herself slowly fading back to reality. The StarClan she-cat disappeared from her view and the fogginess cleared.
Nightgaze found herself panting. Her breath was racing and she couldn’t seem to stop it. What was wrong? Her paws hit the ground hard as she collapsed.
She recognized the sound of Cardinalflight’s pawsteps running towards her. “Nightgaze!” Cardinalflight shouted, alarmed. Immediately, her mentor sprang to action, swiftly grabbing coltsfoot from the herb store. She nudged the leaves towards Nightgaze encouraging her to consume them.
She swallowed the leaves, barely chewing them before in panic. Thankfully, Nightgaze began to catch her breath.
Cardinalflight picked up Nightgaze by the scruff as if she were a kit, moving her away from Duststar. She dropped her in her nest, curling up beside her.
“Tell me little one,” Cardinalflight said, “What happened?” Her voice was soft, just like Graywillow’s was when Nightgaze and her littermates were little in the nursery.
“StarClan,” Nightgaze muttered woozily.
“What did they tell you?” Cardinalflight asked. She wrapped her tail around Nightgaze.
Why does she seem so nervous? “That Duststar is on her last life.” She paused for a moment, “Why did having a vision make me feel so terrible?”
“Because—“ Cardinalflight stopped. She seemed to inch even closer to Nightgaze. “You are special.”
“But that’s not an answer,” Nightgaze protested, “That’s not telling me exactly why. This doesn’t happen at the moontree.”
“Nightgaze, it’s for your own good. You’ll find out when it’s time.” Cardinalflight said.
“Find what out when it’s time?” A voice asked.
Nightgaze turned to see Duststar, head high and awake.

Interesting. Why exactly is Nightgaze so special, I wonder? Imagine Nightgaze if the only one that is not half-clan

Merry Christmas Eve! Your present is an update Chapter Eighteen: Fogpaw sighed. Back to training he went. Branchswirl wanted him to come into territory near the Sandy Flowers to train in battle moves with Sunflowerpaw. The Sandy Flowers was a hollow not far off from PetalClan camp perfect for battle training. Branchswirl hadn’t said anything about his delayed ceremony. Was he upset?
And what do I care, Fogpaw thought, I have more of a right to be mad at him than he will ever have to be mad at me.
He padded beside his mentor as they made their way towards the Sandy Flowers. “Shouldn’t we wait for Amberbush and Sunflowerpaw?” Fogpaw asked.
“They’ll catch up. Amberbush said Sunflowerpaw wanted a little time to rest after hunting before heading out again,” Branchswirl replied, “Anyways, I’m happy they aren’t here with us. I think we both need to have a talk about what happened today, just the two of us, you know?”
Here we go… “If you are mad just tell me.” He grumbled.
“Why would I be mad at you?” Branchswirl asked. Fogpaw’s eyes widened at the response.
“I don’t know, it’s almost like I attacked my own clanmate and got my warrior ceremony postponed?” Fogpaw kicked a pebble that he almost tripped on, annoyed, and then kept walking.
“It’s like you forget I’m not just your mentor, but your father too.”
How funny. The response almost made Fogpaw snort, but as he thought about it more he started to frown. Did Branchswirl really think he was he and his littermates father?
“You defended Nightgaze without hesitation because she was your sister,” He continued, “You were the firstborn of your litter. Your mother always said you’d be a protector, but I never knew how correct she would be until now. I’m proud of you.”
The words seemed to make Fogpaw’s body sting. Before Melodypaw had told him the truth he would have been beaming at Branchswirl’s compliment, it would have made his whole day. Now it just made him feel terrible. Branchswirl was an amazing cat.
Dear StarClan, why couldn’t he have always just really been my father?
Yet instead of expressing this emotion Fogpaw just crumbled everything down to one word. “Thanks,” he mumbled.
“I’ve heard Melodypaw’s pretty mad about it though, eh?”
“Yeah. She’s been having a hard time lately. I just wish I could apologize to her,” Fogpaw replied, “Have you tried talking any sense into Swamptail about maybe lifting my punishment? I don’t even care if I have to stay on apprentice duties like Sweetfang, I just want my warrior name!”
“Listen kit, I’ve tried. I’ve been around Swamptail my whole life since we were newborn kits and he’s always been as stubborn as a badger.”
“You don’t seem like you’ve been with Swamptail since you were newborn kits! You guys hardly act like brothers!” Fogpaw yowled. Hecouldn’t believe what he had just said only moments he said it. He held his breath, digging his claws into the dirt and stopping in place. Why had that just slid out of his fat mouth? “I’m sorry,” he murmured, ashamed. Branchswirl didn’t reply for a moment.
“Don’t be,” Branchswirl said, “I won’t get into it, but something happened when Branchswirl and I were younger that he didn’t react to very appropriately. I don’t agree with many things he says, we sort of just fell out of touch.” When Fogpaw didn’t move, Branchswirl started walking again. “Come on, the Sandy Flowers are just a few tail lengths away.”
Not long later, Amberbush and Sunflowerpaw arrived. Fogpaw stepped more down into the hollow, waiting for his opponent. Sunflowerpaw padded down. Only then had he realized how newly apprenticed the brown speckled tom was. He was just slightly more than half of Fogpaw’s size. However, he certainly didn’t act like he was that small. His claws were unsheathed despite the battle only supposed to be practice. Fogpaw nearly forgot he was Shellpaw’s sister due to the difference in battle technique.
“Sunflowerpaw, this is only practice. Your claws will remain sheathed,” Amberbush reminded her apprentice. Fogpaw’s opponent snorted and then obeyed his mentor. “Fogpaw, Sunflowerpaw is new to this. Please help guide him through the fight. Don’t be scared to beat him, he’ll only learn from it,” She added.
“Get ready…”
Fogpaw lunged just slightly, and Sunflowerpaw seemed to mimic him.
“Go!” Branchswirl yowled.
Sunflowerpaw ran for Fogpaw to pounce, but he waited too long to make action. Before the young apprentice could do anything, Fogpaw sprinted behind him and leaped, landing directly on Sunflowerpaw’s spotted back, pinning him down. Sunflowerpaw squirmed beneath him in his grasp. Shellpaw was way more experienced in battle then him.
“Easy victory, wasn’t that? However, that’s not how all your fights are going to be.”
Fogpaw took his attention off of Sunflowerpaw. Who had said that? It didn’t sound like Branchswirl or Amberbush and it certainly wasn’t Sunflowerpaw. Fogpaw turned to the two mentors in confusion, but they didn’t look like they heard anything. They were just spectating the training, trying to see if Sunflowerpaw would be able to get himself up, despite being firmly held in Fogpaw’s paws.
Fogpaw turned to the other direction. There stood a large, long furred brown tabby tom. His tail flicked side to side in the air, and his body looked almost ghostly. If Fogpaw squinted, it almost looked like the cat had a reddish tint to his fur.
“All your fights won’t be that easy, Fogpaw. Let me teach you how to never face defeat, even against the strongest warriors.” The tom said. His voice was cold and bitter, almost echoey.
Suddenly, something leaped from the ground. Sunflowerpaw! Fogpaw thought. Before he knew it, he was rolled over, his back on the dirt. Sunflowerpaw stood on top of him, panting.
“Good, Sunflowerpaw!” Amberbush mewed. Branchswirl signaled with his tail that the training fight was over. Sunflowerpaw got off of Fogpaw and let him go, then padded towards Amberbush and Branchswirl. Fogpaw slowly got up and looked over to where the brown tabby was.
He was gone.
Fogpaw turned and followed Sunflowerpaw. “You didn’t have to let Sunflowerpaw win, you know?” Branchswirl’s told him. Fogpaw nodded.
“Yeah…it’s just I thought I saw something.” Had no one heard the other cat?
“I’ll be waiting for you tonight, Fogpaw.” The strange tom said yet again. But when Fogpaw looked, there was no other cat in sight.
